The Amish build finished units for $34K for 1-bedroom, $70K for a finished 2-BR that is gorgeous in Stanley WI. Put it on a 30-year mortgage, costs very little per month with a construction loan, as you need a well. Use solar and batteries, rocket stove for heat (Liberator), and composting toilet from Toilet Tech instead of paying for a septic or holding tank (& pumping fees). Mortgage on a 100K + land is doable for most.

A solar system for one of these can be had for less than 2k and you can start small and work up to a larger system if you need it. run 2x4 ceiling joists all the way across on top of the top plates. Our studs were on 16" centers so we done every third on so they are 4 feet apart. Screw hurricane ties too, even to the rafters that are all ready there. We used wood glue and nailed with an air nailer. They lay right beside the rafters that are all ready there It will be very hard for wind to pull it off. We used 29 gauge building metal for the ceiling. Run it perpendicular to the ceiling joists. Lay batt insulation as you go. The last one we used just a little spray glue to hold the insulation to the last piece of ceiling metal until we got it up. We ran gray plastic electrical conduit to do our led tubular lights. Be sure and vent the attic. We ran our drain vent pipe up into the attic and down to the end and used a screened vent off an old trailer house on the outside to keep any unwanted critters out. That way you don't have a hole in your nice roof to worry about.
