I found the modern Canon mirrorless a game changer, today is grey overcast in the UK but now I can still photograph birds in the garden whereas I just wouldn’t have bothered before, eye focusing is magic, silent shutter is ace, my 1.4 extender that also sat in the bag unused is now frequently used with the 100-400 Mk ii. Another great video guys! Thanks for the info! I’m 70 and just starting in nature photography. (Gotta have something I can do at my own pace) I have the Canon R6, the rf 100-500, and the 800 rf/f11 prime. Your videos and others let me know about pushing the ISO and knowing “spray and pray” is a valid technique! I’m comfortable with anything under 20,000 because pros like yourselves are doing it. Even if I’m not the best photographer or very good at editing yet, my raw files aren’t going anywhere. Taking your classes is next on my list.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your no nonsense and practical content, plus all the useful little tips you throw in. And thank goodness someone is talking about the importance of understanding and utilising the software for post processing. I get so tired of the comment of getting it totally right in camera. We are not shooting slide film here, in which case, the comment has more validity. Raw files are digital negatives, and the processing of it etc is down to the skill of the person developing that image. I started in film days and used both negatives and slides, even Cibachrome printing, and I know there are so many variables involved, paper, different chemicals, temperatures etc all had an effect on the end image so yes, yes, yes, understanding how to develop your image with software is a very important point. As someone mentioned in earlier comments, your tips and views on content management would be very welcome , particularly as you must have loads of it to deal with.

Hey my bird friends, thanks again for another great episode ! Since I already saw Jan's teleconvertor preview from last week, I take home this time the neat trick of Glenn to use the knee for stability. However I'm surprised he didn't go out shooting in fall.. The more the leaves are falling, the easier it is to actually find the birds. Plus, most certainly in Glenn's region, the fall colors of the trees make very nice warm and original bokeh backgrounds ! For me, summer is the most difficult season for spotting & shooting birds.

Jan, I mentioned how much I like walking with the 100-500 on your channel. Big primes still take better images, especially in low light, but I enjoy finding shots in habitat. Glenn, the tree lean is a good tip. Works well with big rocks and anything else in the environment that's stable. However, you get far fewer shots when you don't use a setup/blind. Glenn discussed previously how he finds shots in the field using the example of a quail, but even that example had a setup. I suspect most advice like this depends on the bird species. Learn their calls, learn their behavior, and predict where they'll go. Easier said than done.

Good tip on Topaz (same goes for DxO) on using the graphics accelerator. Loving these videos guys! I agree with you on spray & pray (as long as composition is right) I took 72 images at 1/125sec in very low light with poor handheld technique and just 1 photo was sharp and its was my most detailed photo yet, was at minimum focus distance of my lens. Doing some tests on tame birds, with my mini tripod / gimble I was getting a good hit-rate at 1/80sec, shows benefits of not going handheld. I know birds don't stay still, and with wind you have big problems with branches moving, but I swear when birds are looking at you, they are the most still subjects ever! There is no way I could stay still for 1/80sec. I think its worth shooting these low shutter speeds only for more common birds that you don't care if you miss the shot because keeping the ISO right down in soft light really gives you amazing detail.
@GlennBartley3 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day its always a balance. Raise ISO? Dare to shoot at lower SS? Depends how long the bird will stay still. You've gotta factor everything in!

As an APS-C sensor, i find it really hard to remove color blotches or color noise in my photographs shot at ISO 800-1600 range even when nusing denoise and pureraw. I agree with you, we really need to see what the z9 can do. However, if you are paying attention the latest leaks suggest it will do 8k 60 for around an hour or so. Plus 16 bit files at 30 fps! I always use a Black rapid type strap to carry my R6 and RF100-500, changing or adding a converter is easy because when I take of the camera, the lens is connected to the strap, I have one hand free to do the change. Also I mostly use a rain cover sleeve that fits perfect around the lenshood, and covers the whole combo, 2/3 of the length has Velcro tape. As long as the birds or animals not far away I use the R6/RF100-500 plus 1.4 Ex if needed/possible. Now we have fall and the conditions are not so good, also the birds or animals are far away and I like to use now my "old" 500mm F4 when I am in a hide. Walking around for birds in flight is still possible. I feel that high ISO is not a problem as long as the object is close enough, and the picture is sharp. Like to use the combo now also a lot for Mushrooms using the Focus bracketing technic HANDHELD, works great. By the way nice video.

Morning Guys With some birds you can time slow shutter speed shots based on the behaviour of the bird. I shoot dippers on a stream at 1/6th second so that I get nice water movement. Use tripod and time the shot for the end of the birds dip when it is still. Take a burst as always some throw always-although less than you might imagine Bob

Just wondering which is the best way to go: using a 100-500mm with 1.4x tc, or the rf 800mm f11? also I use my Canon R5 to download my images on the pc, is there any advantage to using a card reader as opposed to the camera for this operation? Thanks! Card Reader should be faster when you are using a CFexpress card. What speed are you getting atm? I don't think the 560mm vs 800mm are too comparable. In this case the 800 probably wins. Hi Jan & Glenn , really surprised that you professionals trust the " crappy auto workflow" of DXO and/or even worse TOPAZ DENOISE , with no control what is removed in terms of noise /detail and how much sharpness is applied finally to the " raw file" . I only run topaz on a separate layer in Photoshop, so I can control what it does and where I apply it. Pure RAW does a very good job and allows for a very fast workflow. I don't mind the results I am getting out of DPP, but the program itself is a real pain to use.

Thanks guys! I can't help feeling sorry for those who have built up tremendous skills for shooting birds in flight, using traditional DSLRs. I'm 75 years old, and not as quick or nimble as I used to be, so my R5 is a game changer. Much easier now to keep fast moving stuff in focus, and in the frame. I sold my 1DX, 5D4, 500 f4, and 300 f2.8. I'm having a ball with the R5 and 100-400 Mk II. I walk a few miles every day, and this kit is no problem to carry..... and yet, the R5 handles like a traditional DSLR. It feels right in the hand, and all the buttons are where you'd expect to find them. Here in Ireland, if you're shooting at 1/3200 or faster, you can expect to be using high ISOs [ 5000 and higher ] all the time except Summer. This not a problem for me anymore. The combination of mirrorless, DXO PureRaw and Topaz are absolutely brilliant....AND...the new Lightroom and Photoshop upgrades.....I think I'm dead and gone to heaven! {:o}

I enjoyed all the information as always, thank you both. Although I've version III TCs I am still a bit old school reluctant to use them without feeling images are too greatly compromised as apposed to using a prime lens and in particular zoom lenses. I've used the 1.4x on 400 my DO prime lens on a lot when I travel and the 600 is not practical to haul around and am quite comfortable with the 1.4x on prime lenses in terms of the resulting quality. I also will use the 1.4x on the 600 too of course. I am only into the R5 world (from the 5D world) a couple-three months but based upon your comments I'll try them more often as the high-ISO world has proved not to be so scary now (again I pushed into the high-ISO world largely on your comments). At one time I thought I was 'Mr. Automatic' like you when switching to/from a TC, but once on a trip to Africa I tried to put it on the camera first and backwards damaging the camera mirror system, requiring a 'significant change' in camera technique for the rest of that trip (and a pricy repair when I did get back). I use the Topaz DeNoise AI as well, but have the preferences for processing set to 'auto' and it seems fast. I will set it to the video card vs CPU or Auto and see if it makes a difference, but my feeling is that it picks the video card in 'auto' mode anyway.
