If you’ve seen the vids of the monkies running wild in the streets of Thailand you’ll find your answer. The Thai authorities have also tried the same policy that China is trying, but it hasn’t been successful. At least the monkies on Golden Hill are somewhat contained. That may make the difference.

He's a wild monkey, so they won't interfere. Besides, there are no vets for them, so nature will just take its course. Sterilizations can be performed by techs who are trained to do that specific procedure.

I'm only saying that bureaucracy always resuts in doing things in the least-intelligent way imaginable, and that the excuse is usally to try not to waste money (even though little gets done over long periods of time and always winds up costing far more than initially predicted). In the US, the excuse will always be it's an easier burden on taxpayers (which invariably winds up costing taxpayers more). I don't know the mechanics of how that works in China, but in this specific case, asking any government to actually take the time to get the know a huge set of monkeys well enough to know who the best candidates are for this sort of procedure, is laughable. It's not even feasible in reality, and at the end of the day, they'll just tell you that indiscriminately catching, sterilizing, and releasing monnkeys from the wild is the most efficient method of getting the job done without costing someone a fortune.

It's too bad all the troops don't have a Gyspy. At least she gives other females a chance to raise babies otherwise that would never get to. Gyspy is the lowest ranking member and all her babies are very loving to each other. If any of her offspring are in trouble, she leaps from the shadows and defends them. She may not be an ideal mother, but she is a blessing in disguise. I will defend her always.

What a heavy heart you must have today. I imagine even your feet felt like you were wearing lead boots back down that hill. It takes the spring right out of your step to see all these sterilizations days after the fact. They each lost something so vital and how sad some will never know the fulfillment of their purpose. 3 years old seems far too young. This was a rather sharp cull this year. I can’t recall that so many were caught the last time they came around. I guess our only consolation today is that perhaps next year the culling won’t run so deep. Take an extra moment for yourself to grieve the future implications you experienced. It must take the wind right out of your sails to see it up close.

The aim is to reduce or stabilize the population. If every female reproduced, the babies would need to be sterilized. This way, it prevents doing double the work because the females that were bred would have to be done. I don’t think the monkeys know they have been sterilized.

Hello! Reddy has mid-level social standing. Bossy is the leader of their troop. Since they haven’t had a good male leader since Grandee, this troop has been floundering & Bossy seems less energetic to be the legendary fierce leader. The male leaders have limited reign as the females kick them out as needed. The females decide which males stay, get kicked out, or kept in mid-level roles, leaders, etc.
