World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Nodirbek is such a tactical beast with more solid play than Alireza. This was top-notch calculation and he found his way out of the tactical forest while leaving Ju Wenjun behind.

Nodirbek missed a few moves that would've been better and was lucky Ju Wenjun isn't 2700+ rated and more capable of capitalizing on those inaccuracies. But it was these inaccuracies that led up to a board filled with landmines. Brilliant fun game to watch though. I'm no savant and can't remember all the games I've watched over the years, but this game I think would make top 20 out of the thousands I've watched... Real mind effer this one is.

During that same tournament in Toronto Magnus said that he has huge potential and upside, but also implied that he wasn’t ready to win it all. Not against the big dogs. He has the talent but not the mental game. He had wesley beat but got nervous and cautious in the final Armageddon and it lost him that final match. And then Wesley fell to the same nerves against Magnus. Exactly like Magnus knew both of them would. When he beat caruana in the semifinals he knew without a doubt he had already won the tournament and he made that very clear in his pregame interviews before the final match. Planting that in Wesley’s head knowing exactly how it would affect him. Psychology is real 😂

Well worth remembering. The two leaders of the tournament, Nordirbek and Gukesh are 19 and 17 respectively. Remarkable young talents, both of them (and don't ignore how young Alireza and Pragg, both doing reasonably well in this tournament, are either). It augurs very well for the future of chess.

A lot of pain can be avoided by not accepting the piece sacrifice in such situations, but sadly, we humans always end up going for it. I mean rather than following the path that your opponent has carefully calculated, with his gambit, how about letting him play with an extra pawn or two, instead focussing on getting your position defendable.

Hans Niemann = next Bobby Fischer - Wesley So = current Bobby Fischer - Bobby Fischer's ghost = old Bobby Fischer - Beth Harmon = Bobby Fischer in another universe Each of these 4 'is a prodigy, had a rather dark childhood and is American'. Speaking of Wesley So Hikaru's (the rapid WFRCC) wife almost beat Wesley So's (the classical WFRCC) girlfriend! 2023 USCC - Indeed Carissa Yip won and thanked Wesley So as her secret second in the 2023 USCC closing ceremony speech. But in Carissa vs Atousa, Carissa was losing most of the game. Atousa just blundered in the end. move 54 for black is an 8-move equality puzzle it's so sharp [Variant "From Position"] [FEN "1Q5k/3r1rn1/p3N3/Pp1p2P1/1q2p3/1B2R2P/5P2/6K1 b"] 1... Kh7 2. g6+ Kxg6 3. Rg3+ Kf6 4. Nxg7 Rxg7 5. Qf4+ Ke6 6. Qh6+ Kf5 7. Rxg7 Rxg7+ 8. Qxg7 Qxb3 PS xcdhgq #suggestion #womeninchess #uschesschamps #uschess #uschesschamp #uscc

I've been excited by Nordirbek's play lately. I am absolutely unimpressed by Ali Reza, and don't care if he wins or loses.
