I’m pretty sure the writers didn’t intend for anyone to overthink the food and water thing 😅. It’s pretty straightforward that they returned to the living world (aka they survived their near death experiences). SPOILERS: Especially when everyone is reunited with their loved ones. Arisu even goes back to the Borderlands when he experiences yet another near death experience in the short spin-off manga “Alice in Borderland Retry” (It’s only like ten chapters and just features one long game). And there’s another spin-off called “Alice in Border Road” that features a female protagonist that also experiences a near death event and is forced to go on a treacherous road-trip with 11 other victims who also experienced the same near death event. (It’s implied in the mangas that the Borderlands connects people that have all been through the same traumatic event. The original series featured a large scale disaster, hence why there were so many players and dealers). But yeah the Borderlands is essentially just purgatory, giving victims an opportunity to rejoin the living. They’re pretty lucky given that whatever trauma they experienced didn’t just kill them in an instant. But the show could go in an entirely different direction in the end, even though it’s been a pretty faithful adaptation so far save for a few changes.

I'm pretty sure there's no eating/drinking problem. Any effects to the marionette's body is mirrored in the real world, however things like food, water and air are physical objects, so let's say you eat a loaf of bread; what you're doing is giving nutrients and sustenance to the marionette, you aren't sending a loaf of bread into the stomache of your real world body. That would be like saying if you filled your pockets with cash in the Borderland, you'd be rich when you return. You need to eat and drink in Borderland because that's where your body is, and so it has to follow their laws of physics while there. And even if your body carries over the food in your stomache when you return, you won't be stuffed, because while in Borderland time progresses faster, meaning your body digests faster relative to the real world.

About the food and water, it could just be an illusion casted by the brain. If you eat something in borderland, it might not actually mean you are eating something irl. Plus, it could just be IVs. There isn’t anything suggesting that hunger or nutrition can be transferred just because damage is.

I dunno random theory but they were clearly his friends based on his memories. It seems he was given a dealer visa and stayed loyal to his friends who were given player visas so he let them be on his team. He seemed like a fair, stand up guy to be fair to him, although obviously a little odd.

what if the joker planned for the characters to be injured in the borderland the same way they got injured when the meteor struck? (for example akane's chopped off foot) and i dont see how eating and drinking will affect their body in the real world because as mentioned, when they were in the borderland their heart stopped beating for a minute, hence the body shouldn't work at all in the real world and what they do in the borderland wont carry forward to when they decied to go back into the real world.

If you’re able to die from lack of oxygen and drowning (like we see in the show), then that means there has to be something to prevent that, such as breathing. Same thing with eating and drinking. If you’re able to die from starvation and dehydration (like Arisu was starting to do to himself), there was have to be something to prevent that, like eating and drinking

What if more than 12 people choose to become citizens? Are 12 randomly chosen and then the rest killed? And what if the citizens win? What do they do then?

These are good questions! To answer the first one, there can be more than 12 citizens, but there are 12 main citizens. These citizens are each represented by a different face card, but they can have teammates that are also citizens, as we can see in the King of Clubs game. As for the second question, because there can be more than 12 citizens, it would seem as if they would not be randomly chosen or killed, rather made as teammates. As for the third question, it doesn’t seem as if the citizens win anything necessarily. The same way that the players don’t win anything. The players only win the ability to return to their original lives, which isn’t really a reward as many never wanted to go to the Borderlands anyways, or they could become citizens. I would assume that if a citizen would “win” anything, it would be the ability to choose to remain as a citizen, or to return again!

Kinda makes me want to hear your theories on Kamen Rider Geats. It's the currently airing Kamen Rider show, where a bunch of civilians join a competition called the Desire Grand Prix. The players go through a series of games that involves monsters known as Jamato, and the player who makes it to the final round and defeats the boss gets their wish granted while the world resets, and the next "season" of the Desire Grand Prix starts anew.

Spoiler warning for season 2: For the food aspect, I thought that represented that the user was on a feeding tube. So in season 1 Arisu gives up which if a patient is not responding or potential have so much brain damage, the offer to let the patient pass in peace would be to pull the feeding tube. He starved. Then there was activity that suggest he is still fighting so the reintroduced the feeding tube which is why you see him eat more. I imagine the amount of food would feel like a feast if you're in a comatose state.

@@tomedwards8966 But nearly all of the major characters including Beach members are shown to be at Shibuya crossing at the same time as Arisu at the end. Of course because of the difference in how time passes in the Borderlands vs the real world, it might still work out. I didn't like the 'true' ending much though, all the different possible explanations given by the Queen of Hearts seemed a lot more entertaining (and were probably referencing other films and series of the sort), but then they pull this kind of really unsatisfactory twist. It was almost as disappointing as how Life of Pi ended (in the movie), really diminished the struggle of the characters for me

@@leparraindufromage366 They still could have been injured/died slightly earlier if they were all outside while Arisu and his friends were slightly protected being down in the station. When I originally heard this explanation, it was actual explaining how the citizens had been there for so long in comparison. They were the ones right at the impact site. I thought the ending was decent, tho the VR one could have been interesting too. My theory after season 1 was actually that they were dead, but I thought Arisu and his friends died in traffic like in the mental hospital ending. I think the meteor is better tho because it explains the fireworks and why everybody else was there.

I just want one question answered... if the dealer dies when the players clear his game, how the flying f could a dealer survive the seven of hearts? That game will ALWAYS end in a clear, or am I missing something here? The only way for the 7H to not be cleared would be if the dealer was playing the game and winning, like the 5S, but well... there wasn't a dealer (unless it was Saori, but she played and survived the 3C aswell, so she should be good).

But it's not the Manga. It is based on it, but it stands alone. And no, they don't explode if they eat two meals a day for 30 borderland days, just because some of the stuff in borderlands impacts the characters' real life bodies, and 30 days is 10 real life seconds. It's called dramatic license, and the showrunners take it on matters like this. It's not that literal. Repeat after me: "It's only a TV show! It's only a TV show.....!"

There's a huge fallacy with the overeating thing. Even though it's seconds in the real world, your body would still be starving burning calories and then you would be eating to refill them. If overeating is a possibility then logically your body is also starving when you are.

I wonder though, if your body in the real world mirrors your body in the borderlands, wouldn't it, at any given moment be exactly as hydrated/oxigenated/etc. as it is in the borderlands? If your body in the real world exploded (or whatever) from overfeeding after a couple of meals, you would be dead, and how could you make it through the entire 75 days if your body died a few meals in? 🤔
