There was a time when the league was very bread-and-butter, and the FA Cup was glamorous by comparison. But the rise of the Premier League changed the dynamic. Prem footballers are multi-millionaire celebrates and, as a result, the league has far more appeal and the Cup's has diminished. I wouldn't say Man U pulling out of the FA Cup to go play in some meaningless (but lucrative) competition overseas killed the Cup, but IMHO it did have an effect on the way clubs and fans viewed it from then on. It's not really been the same since.

If you ask someone what they think about the cup the answer will depend on what club they support if they are a smaller club that has won it like Pompey or Wigan they will say “It’s the best competition in the world” but if you ask a United or Liverpool fan who has seen multiple victories and it’s not as special they will say “It’s alright” it means a lot more to clubs and their fans who know that the cup is one of their only chances to be in the spotlight

it makes no sense that the big clubs don't have to play replays- teams in lower leagues play far more games anyway and this only applies to the 7 teams in Europe each season compared to over 1000 that are eligible for the cup- let alone the first two rounds which are literally league one and below. don't even get me started on the cup final- the biggest game in England, no arguments, regardless of whatever's happening in the league- is now within the Premier league season as if the FA think it's less important. Football's not a business. and if that is the only thing it has become then I'm no longer a supporter, merely a consumer. In general, more people actually care about smaller clubs than bigger clubs as there's more passion and more at stake, besides, we're not talking about you, we're talking about football fans and as a breed in England i think many people do watch the replays, otherwise there would be no money in it for the clubs anyway.Whether these clubs generate revenue for football is irrelevant, thus, so is where they sit in the league pyramid. At the end of the day whether you're Man city or Bacup borough, there is always a group of people who put their lives into helping a team flourish and attempting to prevent this for benefit of what are basically now soulless multinational conglomerates is just naive. People who say otherwise sound as though they've never watched a game from anywhere but the living room. The big teams have teams of people at billions of pounds at their fingertips, they can be expected to be able to sort out players on their own, while lower- and non-league clubs are much more limited in options. The cup is dying
@roberthughes-sw6ii9 сағат бұрын
'Leicester-Syndrome' has killed football in England in so many ways (that is a term I have just created). It was great to see a non big 6 club challenge and win trophies, but the top 6 have just doubled down big time and now 'lesser' clubs have no chance. Promoted teams are instantly relegated. Replays are cancelled. It's a joke. The FA cup is still (possibly) fun if you have a good run, but good is relative to your club size. Sure folk have a different opinion but that's my take from a lower league perspective.

here in Brazil we have 2 competitions outside of the Brazilian League: the Brazilian Cup and the State Leagues. the State Leagues are in a similar situation of the FA Cup, cause they are played in btw the end of January to the beggining of April, and nowadays they've been relegated as a third tier tournament, pretty much the only that gives profit to the teams involved is the São Paulo State League (reward for playing is better than some South American Leagues) and even the top teams from São Paulo State treat it as a third tier tournament (some call the State Leagues the "Firms pleaser") meanwhile the Brazilian Cup is at a all time high, with teams making a profit even if been eliminated in the first round, plus a 15 million dollar prize for the winner (the only tournament that surpasses in South America is the Libertadores), and to top it all the winner qualifies to Libertadores :V

Loved it in the 90s until the FA pressured Man United into pulling out because they saw the provisional schedule for the 1999-2000 season and (wrongly) panicked. That was the beginning of the end and the prioritising of other competitions has just stuck more nails in the coffin. Now I mainly think how a surprise winner just messes up the coefficient for a season or two. And also how there are only 700-odd teams in it when the French Cup (bigger country, but similar population) manages to have ten times that figures take part.

I've ate slept and drank the history of the cup and was a little surprised to see that, after being rally big in the Victorian era, it dropped off in the early 20th century and gates could be surprisingly and similarly low in the earlier rounds before 1930. The Movietone era started gates getting big but it was the 40s and 50s where it exploded. A home cup tie absolutely guaranteed a team their biggest gate of the season and so many clubs set their all time record attendance in cup ties in that era. In the 60s the TV element kept cup final day big but the 70s was probably the pinnacle in terms of comparison to the League. It was probably the one decade where most fans would have chosen winning the cup over the title. Although it wasn't so much that cup tie gates were huge as league gates were in steep decline due to hooliganism and cup ties were often felt safer for the family to go to. On tele it was no contest and such a big deal for your team to go tot he cup final whereas winning the league was great but nowhere near as much media fanfare. England domination of the European cup, the start of live league games saw the start of the decline of the F A Cup as a spectacle but the Premier League and Champions League era has killed it stone dead as far as Championship sides are concerned and left it largely devoid of interest for Premier League fans until at least round 5. It's a little sad as I absolutely love the history of the cup and the media really try to big it up when a big team gets knocked out. But its clear to see that Championship sides in particular hate it and are even more likely to field a virtual reserve team in it than Premier League sides. Promotion or avoiding relegation is just so much more important. Everything has it's time and times change. I love the Grand National too but it's a shadow of the race it was. Miss World was immensely popular and those who called it a cattle market were on the periphery and Eurovision was one of the biggest family friendly nights of the year and only hinted at being slightly camp at times.

I was at Bramall Lane, always am for these. Bloody freezing but I don't mind. It's always crap. Both cup competitions for the early rounds we don't have good attendances. The club doesn't even open BLUT or The Kop and the other two sides we don't even sell out. People say because of the ice, it was on TV, and because of the time is the reason. But that's miles from the truth. We may have got a few thousand more had it been at the weekend, but still wouldn't have sold out those two stands. Sure, it may have been around 9/10k, but still not great. We only would really get bigger numbers against the rival teams. The mad thing is we took almost as many away to Barnsley in the EFL cup as we had for this home game in the FA Cup. We've had jnjuries and an illness going through the team and everyone's knackered and massively needed a rest. This game, in a competition we ultimately know we have no chance of winning, was that opportunity to do so. The fact we had Hamer and O'Hare on the bench and Wilder not only didn't bring either on, but didn't make any subs until forced or until the 81st minute kind of says this. We all knew this was goung to happen and it would mainly be the kids (as it usually is). This meant lots stayed away for that reason, as some see it as a waste of money not watching the first team. Personally I'd go regardless. I've been to the U23s, I've been to the women's team and I go to these early round cup games. At the end of the day the league is far more important than a cup that, apart from the odd time, will be won by Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Chelsea or Man U.

Fa Cup is getting boring. Need to not allow same league draws. That’s what the issue is. Like tonight with villa West Ham. Just boring. Allow a lower league team get a prem draw
@alexmiddleton450914 сағат бұрын
Cardiff and Sheff U has already been played and will again be played. No one cares as it’s not a decent draw. They have a league 2 side there’ll be more away fans. Prem team there’ll be more home. Cardiff travelling to Sheffield on a Thursday is ridiculous

In Japan “their FA cup” includes every team including semi professional teams and high school teams. One year the title holders went against a high school team and conceded 2.

I get they draw bigger audiences on tv but all prem ties shouldn’t be televised in these earlier rounds
@georgecarr984412 сағат бұрын
That would just kill the next round as most small teams would be eliminated

I think football has just become less special to people as it's become more commercialized

I was so disappointed to see what the live games are this weekend. Tamworth V Tottenham, Liverpool V Accrington, Man City V Salford. Leeds V Harrogate. No hope of any shocks there. There has to at least be a slim chance of an upset. To be fair, the draw in general was really bad. Most prem teams got a good draw. There's only a handful of standout games. Arsenal V Man Utd being the obvious one.

Viz, let me clear a few things up here, as a blade. I love you man, your content is brilliant, I watch every single video you upload and value your opinion highly, however, i do feel as if this 'dig' at us blades is a little lazy from you. We have 9 . . . Sorry 10 players out injured now, the tenth being Norrington-Davies having to come off injured last night. Around 6-7 of these injuries are 1st teamers. We consistently have 4-5 academy players on our bench and we have a player playing in CM, in Sydie Peck, who has never played men's football until this season, same as one of our 1st team strikers this season, Ryan One. We are literally down to the bare bones and this extremely busy xmas/new year break has taken its toll on these players, 90 mins every other day for weeks, hence why our performances have dropped and we are down to 3rd. We are getting alot of bad press about last nights game, but what was the alternative? Play what little 1st team players we have AGAIN, having played 90 mins every other day for 4-5 weeks now? in a competition we knew we didn't really stand a chance of winning? Risking them like we did Norrington-Davies? Let's be realistic here too, the 6000 odd fans that went, hats off to them, freezing cold, Thursday night, streets still heaped up with snow in some parts of Sheffield, going to watch us knowing we have extremely tired bodies and that the kids would play.

Wtf? I care about it and most clubs in PL cares about it. As an international fan i have to be awake till 1 am just to watch 3rd round.

I support Bradford and went to Wembley just to see our keeper get sent off 5 mins in and get battered 5-0

Fa cup is fine. I’ve always said the league cup lacks something. It’s just fa cup lite, just another knock out comp, it doesn’t differentiate enough from the fa cup.

Personally, the FA Cup will always be there. Since they scrapped replays, they should’ve given lower level clubs home advantage…. The rise of Continental Cups and the money has sucked the glamour. You make really good points here. The semi final should go back to club grounds as well.

Remember that phrase? 'the magic of the fa cup.' If im honest i dont feel it anymore. Those upsets like bradford chelsea 4-2 in 2015. Obviously wigan in 2013. Reading in 2015 going toe to toe with arsenal in the semi final. I remember relatively small teams would make the final/semi final. Villa in 2015 against arsenal watford in 2019. Wigan in 2013 obviously Hull in 2014. The magic of the FA cup has died all because of money man its truly devastating.

I think the FA cup died around the time of the expansion of the CL here to 4 clubs (around 2001/2 was it?) Now you have weeknight games, no replays, etc. It's all about the Jeffersons

Just comes down to the fans getting ripped off more and more, Season ticket prices, 3/4 different subscriptions just to watch 2/3rds of the games, Prem teams not wanting to play each other, no reply’s for lower league teams. Personally I’d just sack the league cup off, no one enjoys it. Are we the only European nation that has two cup competitions and a league?

I care about the FA Cup, mainly because it's on free TV and and I don't have to access totally legitimate streams to watch it (except when my team doesn't get chosen for TV lol)
