Smoke and Scorpion liking his hat makes sense when they are two warriors that rely a lot on weapons and tools that may appear gimmicky (kunai on rope, little mall ninja knife), so they understand the value of a ingenious weapon. While everyone who disses Kung’s hat tend to be magic users of some kind so all they see is a silly hat without thinking about how that shit can just cut your head off.

That alone has tons of story branches. He was already filming when Kung Lao was presenting the hat to Raiden. He either knows what was going to happen based on visual cues, asked Kung Lao what's up with the hat or Kung Lao presented the hat to him first. Either way, he was going to film what would be the best hat trick ever or the worst idea so far.

In a single universe I would like this Kung Lao to be the chosen one. In the game they treat him as arrogant but he gladly accepted Raiden's victory and being chosen.

I think he's growing up with the good childhood with Raiden and his sister (Fujin?) like an ordinary fengjian boy. Maybe Kung Lao is so ego and arrogant. But in the end. Friendship between friend who grow up together like a brothers is more important than victory.

(Spoiler) It becomes sad as Kung Lao's ego led to Sujinko being evil. This event lead to Kung Lao being more level-headed and not so arrogant when it comes to teaching students. (You learn about it from the arcade ending and pregame interactions with Raiden and Liu Kang)

My first experience with the Mortal Kombat franchise was with Mortal Kombat 9, and Kung Lao became one of my favorite characters because I thought his razor hat was so cool. I do miss the fact that he used his hat in many of strings in Mortal Kombat 11, it was such a cool detail, wish they kept that.
