I had a 98' Toyota Tacoma that I got brand new. Took excellent care of it. Oil changes religiously. Wore it completely out in only 125K miles. At that point, my choices were to completely rebuild the motor so it would pass CA smog, or dump it for cheap. I chose the latter. I also had a Chevy S10 (not known for reliability) and I put 257K miles on it. Needed 1 transmission rebuild, but it still ran okay when I gave it to my stepfather. Maybe my experiences were just an exception, but that's my story.

toyotas being ultra reliable vs. other brands is leftover thinking from the 80s and 90s when american brands were at their worst. fact is that hyundai makes more reliable cars than toyota and have for like 20 years almost. the difference between the average ford and the average toyota is negligible. if you stay away from BMW and anything British, you're probably going to be just fine in any new car if you take care of it. for everyone with some story about how their toyota went 500 million miles without changing the oil, there's some other joker claiming the same thing about literally any other car.

And some 90's Tacos had frame rust which Scotty mentioned in another video. But they have crazy resale value and generally very solid drivetrain. Surprised you had trouble. But that said I have a 2002 Avalanche I got used with 210k miles original engine/trans and love it, runs like a top. Many have gotten over 300k on original engine and used /rebuilt GM engines are plentiful and fairly cheap. Not sure I'd pull trigger on 1st year Maverick but its great MPG and like smaller profile. A friend has a older Escape hybrid and the brake regen system failed and the replacement is $7k, more than the whole thing is worth, so he's driving it without the regen. The long term cost of hybrid is something to consider with specialized parts.

@@TheBirdboy84 Hyundai is not even close to Toyota Lexus reliability lol. On average Toyota vehicles last longer than other vehicles. Look at problems per 100. For the last decade you will see Toyota is always near the top. Now, not every unit will make it to 200, 300k miles. My Camry has 190k and still has no major repairs. Scandals like Tacoma rust issues are because of growing too fast and outsourcing work to other companies to build some of its vehicles. Basically, forgetting to collaborate on frame rust proofing.

Hi. I’m in New Zealand and almost 40yrs ago when I was looking at buying my first car, our mechanic said, “buy Toyota”. Any Toyota. And now I it seems Toyota’s are still the preferred brands, suggested by mechanics. NZ and our closet Country Australia both have had a love affair with the Holden brand and Ford, mainly Ford Falcons. I now have 3 Fords. 1990 - 1993s. But my first car was a Holden HQ and I’ve had several of these during my life. I love watching your videos and hopefully learning from them. I grew up learning to ‘do your own repairs’. Once I started having kids, I didn’t have time to do car stuff but would insist my partner service our vehicles. So he had to go to the library and get work books to do repairs. when I bought my 2015 Nissan Frontier new it was the only 4 cyl standard trans in the entire Las Vegas area. I had to settle for silver in color. Today 6 and half years later it has only 19800 miles and has cost me nothing in maintenance other than a battery and a new set of Michelin Defender tires as the original tires were suffering from major dry rot and sun damage. It is what I wanted and it has been totally reliable for every day driving in the city and a few trips out into the hinterlands etc. I had a flat and I took my truck to discount tire in town. While there the manager at my request checked the code on the tires and it came up as being built in 2013. No wonder they looked so bad. Although they had only18K miles on them. I had bought the truck in January of 2015 and now in 2021 the truck was 6 years old but the tires could have been 8 to 9 years old depending on how long they sat in a wharehouse prior to being mounted on my truck. So I invested 750 bucks in a very good set of tires. I believe that the three most important things about your vehicle are the tires, brakes and steering. What do you think?

I've ordered a Maverick! It was a very easy decision for me, I was looking to upgrade from my current compact hatchback to a small SUV mainly so that I could carry a dirt bike on a hitch-mounted rack. But then I heard about the Maverick and it seemed absolutely perfect for my needs: I live in a suburban area where parking can be difficult so compact is good. It will be even better than a SUV for hauling sports equipment which is my only real reason for wanting to get something bigger. And I drive a lot so I'm going to be very happy with the hybrid gas mileage (it's considerably better than my current Subaru Impreza hatchback which only gets about 27 mpg). It's funny how many of my friends are trying to talk me into a Toyota Tacoma or a bigger SUV and into getting all sorts of off-road packages.. I mean I appreciate that those things are cool but I have absolutely no need for them (I have zero intention of taking my next daily driver rock crawling or trail driving or anything more serious than maybe the occasional dirt road to get to a dirt bike trail or MTB spot) and aside from the actual sticker price they would cost me loads of gas money and make parking a pain. We need to snap out of this "bigger is always better" culture and get what best suits our needs.

I’m a layman nobody, but I’ve seen tear down videos of Ford’s eCVT (I drive one in a ‘13 Fusion). Mechanically, it looks much more simple than a standard automatic transmission. Majority of the power for the drivetrain is coming from the main electric motor. The eCVT technology is about 10 years old now. They should have worked out the bugs by now.

For trips to the dump with smelly grass. For trips to the store for furniture no bigger than a desk or a few chairs. I need a Maverick. So wonderful as it is - I'm tossing the Tacoma. Recently I got an up close look at a fewfor some sort of ford event in nashville. They were all the loaded out lariat first editions. Wish I was more of a car guy so I could have more of an informed opinion of them but I was pretty impressed. As someone who owned a crew cab sierra I would love one of these trucks as I dont pull anything and I only used the bed of my sierra a handful of times in a year, and never really filled it up except once for a move. I think if it had a drop down compartment connecting the cab to the bed for longer items it would be perfect for most people who dont own boats and things like that. I currently have a civic for the gas mileage but wish I had an SUV or something just for bulky items, and the Maverick fits the bill for both it seems.

I used my Harbor Freight 4x8 folding trailer to haul big/heavy stuff with my Civic. Up to 10' conduit fit diagonally inside my 2000 sedan with the trunk closed though. Longer stuff could fit on my roofrack. I moved back to snow country, so now I have a Crosstrek that can average 40MPG on a tank, and it hauls my trailer fine too.

However it is $10000 more expensive. That's 50% more cost upfront and about 35% more in fuel costs over the life. Now compare the Toyota to the same size 2021 Ranger...yes an easy choice. I'm actually eyeballing a Tacoma. The gas mileage would be great, but I'd be throwing a toolbox in the bed and that would murder the bed space of the Maverick. At that point, a 4.5' bed just wouldn't be enough space for me, as I've used my old Ranger with a 6' bed with the toolbox installed and helped friends move or pick up washer/dryer units and move them. I bought a truck for a reason. I do work truck things with it.

"Half ton", "3/4 ton", and "1 ton" are outdated designations, going back to the 1940s. Back then, that was their true capacity. Nowdays, ALL pickups can nearly double those numbers, despite what the makers or the EPA might say. My 98 Silverado 454 "3/4 ton" routinely hauls 3000 lbs of steel, a few times 3500, and twice over 4500! In the bed, not towing. 4500 was really pushing it, though.
