I have a townhouse, just two other neighbors. We have nice yards. My backyard is fenced. So I started 3 years ago with two large raised beds for veggies. Overtime I have added two more. Then this spring I bought two chickens, saved money for a coop with a small enclosure. They have the run of my backyard. I've got one more raised bed I can set up, if I decide to. I have a Goldendoodle dog that is very protective of my house and my chickens. She loves her clucky girls! I use a spare room for my pantry, and prepper items. So, even at my age,67, in a townhome, I have my little homestead! It can be done! It brings me joy, as well! My neighbors enjoy the benefits, too!

If farming was easy, there would not be any cities. LOL It's so true that getting to know your animals helps you so much! You can tell if one of your animals isn't acting normally, which is often the first sign that there could be illness, injury, or something else. We have a rooster that hatched on our property, so he's known me as "Momma" since the beginnig - if not as "Momma", at least the bringer of food and water... Anyway, as he started getting closer to adult-sized, he started doing a little dance when he's see me. I have never had an adult (or nearly adult) rooster before, and I worried it could be aggresive behavior starting. Nope - he's just happy as the dickens to see me! He lets me pet his feathers just a little bit and then is off to do whatever chicken thing he was doing before I interrupted. Farm animals are a responsibility not everyone is ready for - but for those willing to work and learn, they are awesome in my opinion!

The amount of work for even a small garden is tremendous and when you lose the crops it is devastating. Last year I planted just a few collard and mustard plants and they did great. They were harvested in time for Thanksgiving and I was thrilled. I planted more this year and I went out there last night to discover worms have eaten most of them. I think there is time to recover but it upsets me to see my hard work and money go down the drain.

Good Friday Afternoon Mrs H😁 I really enjoyed this heartfelt conversation. I am retired so I have nothing but time on my hands to tinker around my small patio garden. I feel so bad for all those young homesteaders that have to hold down a full-time job while pursuing their “homestead dream”….You touched on a subject I see a lot on some of these homestead channels. I can tell when the kids really don’t want to be bother with the farming stuff. It shows in their body language and their demeanor. On the other hand there are lots of homesteads where the kids are truly involved in the “day-to-day” chores and it is so refreshing to watch those families work TOGETHER. I totally respect the homesteaders on this platform. Their drive and determination is inspiring to others. Thank You Mrs H for using your platform to teach and share such positive information. Your animal stories always makes me LOL😂 Be Blessed Mrs H and have a wonderful weekend. Ms. J🙏🏾

Two and a half yrs ago, my husband retired. We bought a 2.5 acre plot of land with absolutely nothing on it except rocks! We have never worked so hard in our lives! We built a small cabin, a goat barn and a chicken coop. This year I delivered my first goat kids and we had a hen hatch out four adorable little chicks. In a month we will start milking and our other two does are hopefully going to be pregnant here shortly! I grew all my corn that I canned and I had so many tomatoes to can that I’m sick of looking at them. The onions are tied and hanging up for winter storage! God blessed us for sure!

I’ve never thought of myself as a homesteader. I love my vegetable garden. This year I vowed not to have a garden as we had so many other things going on, but I pulled out old seeds from years past and I had my husband fit up the garden and I chucked in some seeds. The good Lord blessed us beyond measure and I’ve had plenty of vegetables to put up for the year, so over 300 jars of those vegetables for fall and winter. We still don’t have our squash processed and I would love to make some sauerkraut this fall. I have horses, but I prefer not to have any chickens, except meat birds. I don’t have pigs, cows, or goats. The reason is simple - I spend no less than 4 hours in the barn cleaning stalls and the barn for the horses. I want to take care of the animals that I enjoy - I ride 10-50 miles a week from early spring to late fall. We have at least 3 months of harsh weather here. I don’t look to anyone for help, except to get hay put in the barn.

Animals are a challenge. Had a bull that was missing hair along his spine. Couldn’t figure it out, until I saw him on his knees pushing my chain link fence up and sliding along the ground underneath the fence. The chain link was scraping his back. Had a goat get into my HOUSE one day and pooped and peed from one end to the other while I was gone. Unreal mess. Had cows eat an entire canvas boat cover. Just a few things I’ve experienced. It’s rough with farm animals at times. I’m sorry about your trees. 💜

I knew from the jump dont get more livestock then (I) can handle. The biggest animal i wanted is 3 pigs. Got 5 garden beds but only set up 3 and made the decision to add 3 beds a year until i have 12 . This year i didnt have a garden but i did grow collards, cabbage, kale and volunteer pumkins and corn. Last year it was 1 step forward and 3 steps back all year long. I worked on infrastructure this year so next summer i can have a garden. I do it all alone and yes im so far behind but i get things done when i got the energy and mental fortitude. I deal with depression and last year it was so bad because i had no help and i didnt understand what you just said about not everybody liking farming , animals and this kind of work. So now i get out there and make my good days count. I put my animals on automatic feeders and waterers and every other day i do rounds where i check on everyone. I got a ton of work to do here but i have been taking it one day at a time. Im setting in place a system where things are more automated, i just bought a water hose timer system for automatically filling my pigs, chickens and turkeys waterers instead of me carrying that heavy water hose all over the property. Any body doing this on their own try to start out slow and right off the bat automate feeders and waters if you can. Learn to do one project at a time so you wont have several projects started but non finished and usable. Its a never ending process of building, fixing, animal raising, growing harvesting etc you have to get ok with that and move at a comfortable pace for you.
@LittleOcasioHomestead Жыл бұрын
OMG completely agree!!! I love how you have things automated makes things easy if you're by yourself or if you're not by yourself but everybody gets sick which happened last summer to me. You sound like you have a really good setup it took me a minute to get everything the way I wanted to and working the way I wanted it to.
@tamaracross9 Жыл бұрын
@@LittleOcasioHomestead yea , I am buying stuff a little bit at a time to upgrade and automate every thing. I also consolidated all of my bird of a feather. I use to have it where turkeys was over there and these chickens was separated from the "regular" meat birds. I got tired of running back and forth having 3 bird areas to feed. Now I got 1 bird area, 1 pig area. I'm going to get a deer feeder for my kune kunes ,that way 3 times a day it will shoot out feed to them and I don't have to worry about when I go on trips I know they aren't eating their food all in one day and don't have nothing to eat the rest of the time.

I’m blessed to have my husband of 56 years. Chickens weren’t his idea but it’s not hard to tell how much he enjoys them. He has a time that he gives them treats ( sunflower seeds or cracked corn) He pays special attention to our rooster, JR, who has been ejected from the coop yard. It’s not his fault. Between sour crop and a raccoon, there aren’t enough hens anymore. So it’s just too rough on the 4 left. He gets to visit with one a day depending. Sometimes they retreat to the coop when they see him coming. 🤷🏼♀️ Yes, they do have their own personalities.💕😘God bless all♥️

I have a neighbor with more garden than she can personally water and she had me doing it for her when she went on pleasure trips. At first I felt needed but she never got fewer plants, always MORE. And went on more and longer trips! Finally, I told her I wouldn't do it and I had to force myself to NOT water her plants while she was gone 29 days during our drought and heatwave! Well....she now has an idea of consequences. And I learned that my life is important too!

I agree with your view about our attitudes & emotions. I quickly learned to change my language right off the bat. I do not call it "work" or "chores". They are tasks. Tasks feels pleasant, don't they? I found they are after changing my language. I talk to everything, giving encouragement, saying what I am doing & how pretty they are that day. Sometimes I hum (poor plants...) I had almost an acre-worth of gardens going the 2 of us "older farts" took care of. I cut everything back to levels to feed us yet be manageable. Things have gone much better since. Yes, sometimes something awful occurs. It happens. There are a lot of joys & disappointments when homesteading. I feel more alive & happy when we started over 15 years ago. Bonus, we are healthier, too. You should see my garden planning for every year. A general does not plot out the beds that well. I even color little veggies in the beds in the planning pages. laughing... Oh yes, humor is important. It can get one through very trying events.

I’m 61. We moved last yr to new home. My husband is 💯 % disabled. I do everything. I moved everything myself moving. A hundred trips 45 min both ways with one truck. I had to use 15 gallons of primer to cover all the walls because they didn’t use primer and all my colors turned weird. After coating the walls w white I didn’t touch the house inside again as it was time for planting. I Put in 6 box gardens n 2 other gardens 20x10 ft each. I canned 700 jars the first yr n set a pantry up. I planted raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and peach, apple, pear trees. +2 herb gardens. I dehydrated , canned non stop. I put in chicken coop, started w 4 chickens , this yr got 8 more. This is our second summer here n I did 500 jars this yr. The house inside still isn’t done lol. I’m hoping this fall n winter will be able to get inside done. I have arthritis, and fibromyalgia and there are days I did nothing but when I felt good I was go go go non stop. If I can do it alone, taking care of a dog, a bunch of chickens, and a disabled man anyone can. You can do it! One thing I say a lot is lord give me strength. My other mantra is one step at a time. I mow, I till, plant, laundry, dishes, can, and build. I’ve learned a ton! I’m still alive even if some days I wish I wasn’t lol. It’s hard but so worth it to know how strong you really are. 😊❤

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I wish i could do the work you do in one day. I got myself overwhelmed this summer. Couldnt keep up everything. I put all the pressure on myself to grow and have enough food for me my daughter and two grandbabies. I have 7 chickens,10 rabbits and a cat. My lil dog passed. Waiting for cool weather to process 7 rabbits, 2 roosters. I keep saying i have to make sure my family has food until our country gets back to normal or at least to a point i know food will be available and affordable. I love my garden in containers up where i can tend them. My daughter works so much she cant help me with the chores but she picks up my online orders for me and when i get feed she helps me get it in small containers and in the feed bins. I keep saying i will be glad when my grandkids can help. Im showing them and they name the animals and do things with me and pet all these rabbits lol. I am doing all i can and learning easier ways from great people like yall through these videos. My dream is to raise my own pork. I dont have room for a cow. Love from TN.

I actually think manual labor and caring for your home, family, garden, animals, etc., is therapeutic and calming. Thats the time I do my best praying, reflecting, and planning. Love your channel. GOD bless

Thank you for this. I'm feeling encouraged indeed. We just have a garden, but desire chickens for our little children to care for. And possibly bees 🐝 too.

I would love to have more land. We have less than an acre now.. but I'd love to have lots of property so I can plan native trees that posses benefits for the native wildlife.. then have my small garden patch where I put my veggies. I would also love to have enough room for some chickens too. I enjoy being out in the yard soaking in what all is going on so I aim to create that for my home life

In my experience, if someone doesn't embrace the chore, they will not do it well. I have had a farm, and it is very hard to get away! I had someone take my livestock guardian dog "for a walk," and the foxes saw that and came in and got my chickens. Another person was given the chore of locking up my chickens in the evening when I had to get home late, and failed to do so. Raccoons got in and did in some of my chickens. Don't plan on taking many vacations if you keep any livestock! I hired someone to help with clean up at the end of the season. I had to go to town to run some chores and they were already gone by the time I got back 3 hours later. The work wasn't done. It's hard to get reliable help!

Every farmer I talked to would repeat the same thing about goats & sheep - Meadow Maggots - (yes a nickname for both for many) will break down and eat everything! You need to make sure what you don't want them to have is secured. It doesn't hurt to secure them too, but they will find a way through it at some point. People assume it takes a dummy to run a farm. No, it takes a high IQ, because you are constantly problem solving. It takes researching, finding information people, like a helpful veterinarian to give you the basics so you don't have to take the professional course. You need to understand permits, laws, and know the people to call to get the finer details if you want to change or expand or get a letter about changes for farmers to adhere to, even private ones. It takes a lot of hats to be a decent farmer along with a good heart. Majority of farmers are decent people who are invested emotionally into their work and their animals. It is hard work, it is brain taxing work, and it is, in many ways, a labor of love. There is a reason farming is one of the oldest professions among humans. When you consider the number of different types of degrees a farmer earns as they go, ya, no, farmers are not dumb. Foolish, but humans are foolish. It takes a great deal to work & hats. Farmers will always have my full respect.

Zeke is going to be BBQ 🐐 if he doesn't behave😂. Sometimes a neighbor doesn't want to grow a garden, because they see their neighbor produce and expect free groceries 😮. Yes, Yes, Yes, making them work, "No work, No food." BUT you are right Mrs. H, excellence in a job WELL DONE is necessary. " Whatever you do work at it WITH ALL YOUR HEART ❤ as onto the LORD."

I always wanted to dig a ring-shaped pond ring and let the ducks swim around and around. They would love it and make me laugh. I would like to have a barn attached to my house. No going outside in the cold for chores and I could hear a problem. I would have chickens but no goats, I'd maybe buy goatmilk hopefully from someone, and no Cattle unless they are miniature. I'd like an attached greenhouse for some inside garden, and outside too. And a few fruit trees.... a huge root cellar under the home. Trying to keep it simple but I already thinking of alot. I would probably get livein help from older person(s) who I know I can trust, so many good people I met homeless that might like that. I was homeless before. NOW I have some acreage and alot to plan. I love chickens! My daughter got some and their personalities are so funny! She takes photos of them.😊
