I tried without a swift for the longest time. But, once I started using yarn that came in hanks, it was game over!!! I finally purchased a swift, and no more mess and hours of untangling expensive hanks of yarn!!!

Thank you, I’ve learnt a lot. Was reluctant to try the many digital patterns for using double yarns but now I know how. Understanding how yarns need to be handled is so helpful and will help me get the right yarn in the first place. Rowan Summerlite is awesome. ❤ My winder is going to be very busy.

Appreciate your thoroughness and quality tips!! The slipnot is a clever trick, and I wouldn't have realized how important tension on the ball can be.

Thanks! I learned a few things. The last time I tried to use my ball winder I ended up with the biggest mess that took me hours to unravel. Never again!

Take it slow. The winder can spin faster than the turning handle so it can tangle quickly. Practise is the key.

Thank you so much! I bought two balls of yarn that were more than 1100 yards each and I was pretty sure they would turn into a total mess if I knitted from them directly. You taught me to make two balls from each using a winder. It never occurred to me to let it rest on the floor or in a bowl. I was trying to figure out how to hold it while I used the winder. Duh! Again, thank you.

I got a jumbo that can hold much more yarn (100g i think?) and most of my yarn is handspun so comes in hanks - that was "fun "without a yarn swift. I balled everything I had and now I'm worried if I have to rewind so they won't be too tight sitting. But what else is one to do with a new winder? lol Should I rewind them?

Thats just an unusually long hank, most hanks would be short enough to hug the back of the chair. Wonderful demonstration.

The yarn you winded off the chair is called a hack, a skein is the one you purchase at the craft stores the way it is winded with a center or outer pull and what you take off the yarn winder once winded is called a yarn cake. Thanks for your video.

Hook? I thought it would be called an eye/eyelet, or threade, or loop. I did this once if you move the chair to the corner of the table and the corner can sort of go through the back of the chair it will hold the chair in place so that doesn't slip around while you're working. If you have a workbench that goes straight down on the sides and there's no lip to your table, the corner can't go into that place under the spindles on the chair between the back and the bottom or seat of the chair. But most benches have opening where you can get to them to get your tools and such so if you could clamp something tightly onto it that might hold your chair in place. If you had a short broomstick or mop handle for a laundry dowel to lay across those cross pieces on the chair legs, your yarn wouldn't be so far down and it would be easier to lift up if you didn't have something to catch your yarn on above the chair also it's possible you might not have to help it at all if you did have something up high hang it on or maybe I should say thread it through. I would probably just hold it hanging on my hand and use my thumb to flick the active strand off so that it doesn't catch others. Error is always our teacher so I'm going to call the bunching up of the yarn underneath a teacher. BRILLIANT IDEA! (I think) .Do y'all know that trick of cutting a hole in a paper plate so you can stick your mixer beaters through it so you don't get splashed with whatever it is you're whipping up in the bowl? I wonder if the same trick would work on that ball winder, to prevent the yarn from getting down there and into trouble? Just cut in towards the center and cut out a hole just the right size. Or just cut the hole, by punching out the center and then cutting it to size. Just when I was thinking it would work you're telling us that you think it's full up and that's why it's doing it. That tells me I just want to do my stuff by hand, screw it. I can't afford the $550 LARGE ELECTRIC machine I just now saw a Bag-O-Day Crochet Channel . I don't like for a big long stretch of yarn to ever have a cut or a break in it because of the knots it makes me lose several inches at a time to have to knot off and Russian join or any other special super duper join because it takes time and I never have trusted that industrial knot. They have come undone on me so I think somebody just didn't know how to do them or clip the ends off too close and cut into the knot itself somehow.

First time watching your video. Gave me a laugh - You lift the table up so we can see better (3:53) but then you put the camera is too high (4:02) where one can hardly see the winder. 🤣🤣
