people who are not afraid of failure, are admirable. Also, they are the ones who solve problems! Well done!

A lot of people are asking about yield...unfortunately these potatoes were not able to be taken to harvest...we think that the seed potatoes were no good as they were somewhat moldy and were planted too deep. We are looking into building a new planter for next year and getting some better seed potatoes. Thanks for all your interest!

Thank you for letting us know your experience - even though ist was not yet what it's supposed to be. Still: A step in the right direction!

Very interested in this and how the whole rye/sanfoin cover crop production method stands up for climates outside of the UK. The next time I am in Ohio I would like to come over and say hi. Cheers Mark.

I see you plant the potato'c cut but when i watched the big farmers they just plant the whole potato does anyone know the yield difference if you plant the whole potato.

this was 2 years ago and you commented that you were going to try again. I wonder what were the results of the later trial, if there was one.
@MistressOP6 жыл бұрын
wonder if this would work even better if compost was put on top of those potatoes. or leaves
@wasaap52486 жыл бұрын
try a soil warrior type colter and a tube for planting and only run it 1-2" deep . the press wheels are not needed unless to control depth. if you can fashion a rake to move some if the straw over the potato, they will grow and not turn green from sunlight. for harvest you only need to move the straw

You can't plant irish potatoes just in the ground. You have to hill it. they grow upward from the seed potato unlike sweet potatoes which uses slips and grow downward. The only way that you have worked is if you had rows already , and had a cover crop that was rolled. but as the potato would have made a plant above ground you would have to come back and hill it upward. No till is not for every crop.

Could you plant the potatoes before you rolled the cover crop down?
@MarcellaSmithVegan7 жыл бұрын
You would lose so much of the benefit of the cover crop, once it has been broken over it becomes a great degrading mulch, the roots have already developed an abundance of mycorrhizae for the potatoes. It can make the difference of a wonderful great tasting crop with much less pests compared to a standard weaker crop needing much more irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides. This method is great

Appreciate your comments! We're aiming to have a 'self mulching,' so to speak, method of planting so there is that fantastic mulch. This year we planted directly into standing rye and it was partially rolled from the planting process. Here's the link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaC5amaDotadfK8

Im thinking more of a small 5-8 inch trench where the potato could lay, and then role the cover crop like a v shape, demonstration: V V V V, so it will lay on top of the trench and cover the potato.
@Dollapfin7 жыл бұрын
Harvesting won't be no till, however after a harvest you can plant a nice cover crop to recover them gains lol!

This isn't no-till. That machine is tilling. A no-till potato is laid on top of the ground and covered by hay or straw.
@KristofferRnnAndersen6 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I would categorize this practice as conservation tillage, not no-till.
