True. I never have time for anything, but I decided I wanted to study Italian. In the very beginning, finding the time was a struggle. I decided to get real and get serious if I was going to do this at all. So, every night at midnight when it posted, I would do the assigned lesson for that day. This way, when I woke up later on each morning, it wasn't hanging over me. Thus, I didn't have to ruin my whole day nagging at myself to do the day's lesson. When I wake up each day, it's a done deal, and I'm free to go about other things. When I started these online lessons, the only Italian words I knew were "pizza" and "spaghetti." At the end of this month, Dec. 2024, I will have one full year under my belt and, according to the last report card which they send out every week, I'm in the top 1%. Fast forward to tonight, I'm thinking of doing something similar with art. I'd really like to be able to illustrate handmade greeting cards and some childrens' books. But I'm a high prep procrastinator. Not being perfect out the gate scares me, so I'm listening to these videos and trying to decide on a time during daylight hours when I can establish my art period and then go ahead and stick to it faithfully, like I have done with the language lessons.🤔 These videos are very helpful at breaking up the wall of resistance. Thank you, Daniel. You're more helpful than you know. 🎇🎆🎇

I’ve bought a number of pens, watercolors, acrylic paints, paper, etc. but just cannot find the time to create art (the video you linked is a great help with this). I want to do a little everyday but always felt I need a big block of time. Bottom line, this video is precisely what I needed to hear. Thank you for the wonderful ideas and insight.

I wanted to get better at drawing, so I made myself draw every day. It actually did become a chore, like scrubbing the toilet, and eventually I considered giving up art journaling. Made me so sad. I had lost the joy of drawing and making messes in my books. When I gave myself permission to stop drawing, I found that wasn't an option. I did a terrible urban sketch and wrote JOY at the bottom. That's my reminder. And it's gotten better💯

I have to say that I agree with what Purple... wrote. I was a fan of Bob Ross and used to watch him on TV a long time ago. Even have supplies from then. They store well. But I had the same issue that I am trying to overcome. Never used them. Hope that I will soon be able to. (I have moved to different continents with them, lol. I real meant what I wrote in my comment.)

I keep a watercolor sketchbook, and one thing that's really helped me is having a setup, and I clean up and prepare for the next time, so there's zero resistance to starting. Also every time I stop for the day, I always leave my sketchbook open and turned to a page I'm proud of. Something about that entices me to go look at it again, and then suddenly I'm working on something! And I keep it small, I agree that's a really good tip as well!

Awesome! You gave me a lot of ideas I can share with my students. Thank you from all of us. I may be a teacher and a mentor, but I am always learning new things myself. Art is a process, not a goal oriented activity, and growing as an artist is why I remain involved after all these years. I'm 82-years-old; I've studied art since I was a child, in Europe and NYC and a lot of other places. I was part of the rich art scene in Santa Fe, NM before the invasion of the Californians, and you'd think that was a pinnacle, but it's not. Here I am, years later, having the time of my life reinventing myself as an artist. And it's all thanks to the inspiration I'm finding from videos like yours. Again, thank you for sharing. I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Nice Video. I know the why I can't get myself to do art. What I have never been able to do is get over it. I'm only 77 and been struggling with it since I was a little girl. I guess you can call it "trauma". I don't lack supplies, spent thousands, most not even touched, including the big stuff such as easels (note the plural). Right now, I think I'm almost there. I wonder which of the Danny Sketchbook will do the trick. I do buy the books. (May sound like I am joking but I AM NOT.)

Anyone can be an artist? In my town there is a place called Spindleworks that brings together the works of physically and/or mentally challenged citizens. I dare anyone to NOT call them artists! And at my local art store, there is a bowl of chalk on the outside table, with a sign encouraging people to draw on the sidewalk👨‍🎨 Plus, our town square hosts a farm market every week in the summer - a great source of inspiration 😊

thank you for the video. Wanted to ask, what do you do with the art that you've made? The sketchbooks you've filled, the random leaflets you doodled on the back of. I've drawn since I was a kid, but I've always wondered what the point of holding on to 10s or 100s of sketchbooks were if I knew that they would just be more to carry around as I moved. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this, thank you. Take care.

Every time i feel artblocked and that i dont have a time to draw, i look whats up. Like so, recently, i realized i only have time for few second sketches and they feel like they are gonna be too messy. Which exactly was the reason for mini artblock - i felt like i dont want to "ruin" my current one. Which is ridiculous, but, thats the tipy of inner thoughts that you cant control sometimes, you need to find ways around them. So i just started new tiny notebook for those messy second doodles and instantly it releaved me psychologically and i draw again

Yes, art is therapeutic, it does so much good in this field. At the same time we should not stifle Olympic hopefuls. They might serve as as inspiration rather than an enemy? Back in school on sports day participants got a certificate just for taking part which was a lovely acknowledgement. And also those who reached or practiced greater skill were honoured for their effort. Unthinkable these days!. We are not allowed to look up- or look over to those who have trodden a lone path which led them to greatness. Anything can be 'art' these days, even a signed toilet. Just swim in mediocre soup. Sorry about my blackpilled ramble on your feed but you asked. Hey, I am subscribed for my regular boot up the backside! Yes, I practice 'art' as I enjoy how it changes my vision rather than what I produce. But man, that feeling of of awe pouring from your heart when seeing excellence is just well... awe. Playing is an indulgence which some of us can only part take in to some degree so your message of: get off idle scrolling and pick up that pen is good advice. Bye :)

I don't think motovation is a problem. If you are Not motovated, don't do it. I think the real problem are expectations. Most people (especially ones new to the hobby) think about drawing as a huge thing. You need a work station with all your things, you need everything at Hand all the time, drawing means a perfect copy and that costs time. If people where looser and less afraid of making something imperfect, they wouldnt fear starting

Agree with all tips you provided Danny ( @SketchbookSkool ) except - "We don't have to finish our art in single session". As someone else pointed out that an art session is like an symphony orchestra which can not be paused in the middle and resumed after a break. Because the lack of continuity (flow) that a creative activity demands. Also knowledge workers like us, who carry a lot in our heads post work hours into our personal lives, kind of creates barriers to do any art work even casual one. Any suggestions ?
