Phil, friendly advice from an excavator guy here. Regarding draining. Try put down some pvc pipes so the water can drain through that and try to plan the water path around the trails so you don't need to compromise on the trails. Fantastic project and all the best!

Thank you. There's a few spots where they would have made life easier. One of my self imposed constraints for this trail was to try and build it without using any drainage pipes. I realize this was kind of an arbitrary goal, but i find it rewarding trying to work with the materials i have right on hand. Depending on how it does there's a few places that i might add some in the future if needed. :)

Yeah I'm definitely more comfortable working in weird spots. But when you hook onto a hidden hemlock root or rock, this machine is powerful enough to pull you right over, those moments sometimes catch you off guard. Thats why i would often run it at lower rpms. Harder to make mistakes when there's less power.

@@PhilsWorld for sure! I like a 305 more for that exact reason. They are a lot more balanced in the steep stuff with better proportioned power/weight. That being said, some of the boulders you more moving and the benching you were doing with the smaller machine shows you’ve got it down 🤙🏽👍🏽

There's a lot of situations where having a longer reach and bit extra weight would have been clutch but at the same time there were also a bunch of pinches where a bigger machine wouldn't have fit through without taking out more trees. I'd love to have a second mini in the 302.7/303/303.5cr range but for now it's fun trying to make the most out of this little guy.

I unfortunately got injured at the start of this season, so I missed all the trail days helping build this. However, I am chomping at the bit to get out to this trail, and it for sure will be my first stop next season. Great work Phil! This trail looks like it will be a blast!!!!

I really enjoy watching these build series, keep up the good work. There are so many cool boulders, like the two guard rail boulders, it got me thinking. What if you branched the A line low and use a single boulder like a mini ramp as a step up back to the mainline? Aesthetically it would be really cool if the upper half was sticking up in the air like a diving board. If you want to add some spice, you could make it a mandatory gap. Thanks for the hours of entertainment!

Spent 100 hrs building in the same sized mini in October. It's super fun to be able to bring dreams in reality in a few days. Keep it up. Get a padded seat cushion and try to get out of the machine at least once an hr. I murdered my back and backside doing the same stuff and being a bit too rough w the machine.

In relation to wet spots. A lot of times these "springs" are just due to water collecting in a low spot above whatever zone u r working in. Sometimes it’s worth a hike around (especially after/during a good rain) to see if you have something feeding water in and do some handwork to divert it…

Greg, (the first rider) has been coming out regularly to check on the trail to help evaluate its viability for adaptive bikes. He works with a group that has extras for demoing and one of those purposes is to allow people to try them out to help get a bit more perspective. I'd like to try and ride our trail on one of those next year to help understand what works and what doesn't.

OMG 49:50 guys please be careful. One slip, or accidental nudge with the machine, if those rocks fell on Haley, she would be forever changed, if not killed. I've seen sooo many job site accidents like this.

We have protocols and work extra carefully any time one of us is in the danger zone. There obviously risk involved in these situations but we take this seriously. If i thought it was too dicey i would not allow either of us to be in those positions. I will say often times timelaspe videos make things look more dangerous than they, in reality we are working quite slowly.

Nice work using that excavator. Anyone can make them move but you do it efficiently and effectively. Some drain tile in your wet spots might be useful. Cool video!

Thanks man! The dirt dried out by the end of the year, and set up nice and firm. We had a few major rains after this and everything is looking good. Any additional drainage work we might need to do will be minor.

I have 5 gallon cans that i bring up with me using my talaria (electric dirtbike) every few days. I can usually get 2 days out of a tank (also 5gallons). Usually after 2 days of machine work i have plenty of hand work to keep me busy so I'll commute up on my bike/ebike and do some handwork for a few days.

The parcel is about 200ish acres, and is primarily used for maple sap harvesting. We do not own this land, but we have permission to build here.
