After many hours of editing, part 2 of ''Two Towers'' is now up! It was supposed to go live on the 20th, but editing delays caused it to go live a few hours after midnight. So you get it on Saturday instead :) Thank you for letting me share my movie watching experience with you!

Gamling was described as older. Tolkien was a scholar of Anglo Saxon and of germanic languages and cultures and so it is no coincidence his name was Gamling. The films make him a bit younger though.
@ronweber1402 Жыл бұрын
Ah, he was described as older. I was thinking that Tolkien may have possibly used an even older meaning of the word. Where now it means elder an ancient Norse meaning might have been more akin to wise one, which usually also gets conflated with age.

In The Hobbit book, the Wargs are large, intelligent wolves that are allied with the Goblins. In the LOTR book, the story is rather different in several places from the movie, and the Fellowship is attacked by a pack of Wargs after their unsuccessful attempt to cross the Pass of Caradhras (called the Redhorn Gate in the book). Gandalf sets an entire hillside on fire to drive them off, using magic. In the morning after the fire has died down, all traces of the bodies of the slain Wargs are gone, and Legolas's arrows which had slain them in the battle are lying undisturbed on the ground. "It is as I feared," said Gandalf. "These were no ordinary wolves hunting food in the wilderness." It is fear of the Wargs that convinces the Fellowship to go through the Mines of Moria.

Gandalf is a Maia, basically a lesser angel. He was sent by the Valar (higher angels) to Middle-Earth to support the fight against Sauron, as was Saruman, but they went there in a much weakened form. He did die in his fight against the Balrog (also a Maia, a fallen one) and went outside the universe, to Eru (the creator) who sent him back with enhanced powers.

This movie and the last one are my favorites, things really start ramping up and it’s amazing how overwhelmed you get with the tension-building. It was definitely an experience seeing these in theaters. They need to re-release them for sure, I feel like they’d get a ton of customers.

I watch this about once a year, I have extended edition DVDs, the making of videos make me really emotional, the love, care, attention and detail of everything is overwhelming. Weapons, armour, clothes, sets, sound, everything is an absolute masterpiece done by people who knew it was a once in a lifetime chance to bring what was known and loved by millions of people around the world. Even today the Lord of the Rings is second only to the Bible in print.

Brego was not supposed to come rescue Aragorn from the river. But when they tried to use the correct horse, they could not get it to kneel, so Aragorn could get on. Brego was more than willing to do this stunt. After the trilogy was complete, Mortenson bought Brego, and took him home. So to answer your question, Brego found him, just because he liked him more!!

Superb Reaction, Stajlz, I assume you have Scandinavian antecedents? *grins* You get so much that other reactors miss, well done! The Trilogy was filmed entirely on location in New Zealand (and all the indoor scenes and CGI work were done in NZ too). Kudos for actually rating so highly the work of Andy Serkis. Yes, in all the scenes that involved Gollum, Andy was actually physically on the set with the other characters. I now look forward to seeing your reaction to The Return. I am now subscribing and look forward to more of your work.

Tolkien was Professor of Ancient Languages at The University of Oxford, specializing in Anglo Saxon, an old Germanic language which became Old English & eventually modern English. Besides the Middle Earth materials, Tolkien is also noted for his translation of the Saxon epic poem, "Beowulf." He lamented the loss of old English mythology after the Norman invasion of England by the William, Duke of Normandy, or William the Conquorer in 1066. He was friends with another Oxford professor, C S Lewis & they endaevoured to write their own alternative mythologies. Lewis wrote "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, the most famous being, "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe," while Tolkien came up with his Middle Earth writings, initially as a hobby for himself. He borrowed heavily from his knowledge of Anglo Saxon & other ancient languages, mythologies & cultures. Swedish having roots in older Germanic languages is probably why you recognise some of the words & names. The Rohirim themselves are based heavily on the Anglo Saxons, they frequently use that language in the books. The language Eowyn sings in at Theodred's funeral is actually Anglo Saxon. The main difference between The Rohirim & the Saxons is the latter were never known as great cavalrymen. Many people, including some reactors, mistakenly think that Goblins & Orcs are different. However, they are actually the same: Orc is the old Anglo Saxon name for these creatures, whereas Goblin is the Norman term. Obviously Tolkien prefered the Anglo Saxon name.

This knowledge will help make sense of the future movies. Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will and individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf and lived among them whilst they were unknowing and he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity and simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) and the other Istari (the order sent around the same time and of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is and a student of the Vala by the name Nienna and Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being and Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” and basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea Arien is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon.

Interesting point about the name Gamling. In the book, Gamling is not at all the same character as in the movie. He is indeed an elderly man who was forced to don fighting gear again. The book "The Tolkien Companion" describes him this way: "Gamling the Old: A Westfold-man of Rohan who dwelled with Erkenbrand's people during the years of the War of the Ring. Though deemed too old to bear arms when Erkenbrand marched to the Crossings of Isen, he was later obliged to do so after forces of Saruman defeated Erkenbrand and laid siege to Helm's Deep, which he commanded until the arrival of the King."

Galadriel intentionally match Arwen and Aragorn together while they were both visiting in Lothlórien long ago! I can explain some more story about Aragorn and Arwen without spoilers as it’s not shown in the movies at all. : Galadriel intentionally matched Arwen & Aragorn together while they were both visiting in Lothlorien? Arwen & Aragorn met in Rivendell, & that is where Aragorn fell in love with her, although it doesn’t sound like she felt the same at the time. Aragorn’s mother Gilraen warned him that he was aiming too high, and Elrond was not happy about it either, and Aragorn took heed of this and left Rivendell, to learn how to be a Ranger and to oppose Sauron’s forces. Many years later, he came to Lothlorien, seeking rest and shelter, and Galadriel allowed him to enter. We have this line in the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen: “But Aragorn was grown to full stature of body and mind, and Galadriel bade him cast aside his wayworn raiment, and she clothed him in silver and white, with a cloak of elven-grey and a bright gem on his brow. Then more than any kind of Men he appeared, and seemed rather an Elf-lord from the Isles of the West. And thus it was that Arwen first beheld him again after their long parting; and as he came walking towards her under the trees of Caras Galadhon laden with flowers of gold, her choice was made and her doom appointed.” LOTR Appendices. To me, that makes it rather explicit that Galadriel wanted Aragorn to appear at his best. Why? Who could he possibly impress in Lothlorien, except for Galadriel’s grand-daughter? I think it is quite clear that she wanted them matched, and perhaps her foresight told her that they needed to be matched, as it was part of destiny, to begin the Dominion of Men (something Elrond probably also realised, but couldn’t willingly promote, since it would mean Arwen and Elrond would be parted forever). Plus there is the scene in Lorien, where Galadriel gives Aragorn the Elessar, which went from Galadriel to Celebrian to Arwen and then back to Galadriel in order that she give it as a gift to Aragorn. Again it speaks to me as a collaborative act, and part of Galadriel helping bring the two together: And Aragorn answered: 'Lady, you know all my desire, and long held in keeping the only treasure that I seek. Yet it is not yours to give me, even if you would; and only through darkness shall I come to it.' 'Yet maybe this will lighten your heart,' said Galadriel; 'for it was left in my care to be given to you, should you pass through this land.' Then she lifted from her lap a great stone of a clear green, set in a silver brooch that was wrought in the likeness of an eagle with outspread wings; and as she held it up the gem flashed like the sun shining through the leaves of spring. 'This stone I gave to Celebrían my daughter, and she to hers; and now it comes to you as a token of hope. In this hour take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the house of Elendil! ' From LOTR FOTR BOOK

About the question if elves can become mortal. No, they can't. But there is one exception lying in the family history of Elrond. All elves' lines come together in Elrond. He has some very special ancestors and also he is an half-elve. Because of that, his line has the gift to choose if they want to become mortal. Elrond and Aragon are even related as Elronds brother decided to become mortal and is the ancestor of the Numinorians, Aragons people. Tolkin not only wrote LotR and Hobbit, there is so much more to explore. The Silmarillion start with the creation of eart. In the beginning, it's very biblical like and passes on to all history of elves.

Yes Andy Serkis and the team behind Gollum pioneered the use of mocap in many ways. But mocap is pretty imperfect even nowadays. So it's a combination of motion capture and using Serkis's performance as reference for the artists to animate.

In the book, the Elves never show up at the battle as they were having battles in their own land and Faramir never desire the one ring. Instead he was more kind to Frodo, Sam and Gollum and never took them captive. The Warg attack and Aragorn falling off the cliff never happen in the book. Erkenbrand in the book show up with Gandalf. Eomer was always at the battle from the beginning in the book. Battle of Winterfell from Game of Throne was inspire by the battle of Helm's deep. Movie was film entirely in New Zealand and all 3 movies was film in a year and a half.
