We want little to no movement for our stern tube and cutlass bearing
Matt and I have been continuing a lot of our work underneath the boat and in the engine beds.
Last week we were able to bond the stern tube to the skeg, but it was slightly off, which is going to make for more work finishing it. We did not want the same problem on the port side! Luckily we have Colby's laser to help us from start to finish.
Using our regular laser level to line up the template exactly within the engine bed, we then found the placement for the stern tube, and how the skeg will sit in it. Matt bonds the skeg to the hull with thickened resin, and we let it cure overnight. While that's going on though, we're able to glass around both the stern tube and skeg over on the starboard side.
As far as my other work, I'm still finishing up touchups with our epoxy fairing compound so we can get the next layers of primer on the hulls. One big change is that on the starboard hull, our next coat of primer will be done with Awl Quick, which will be the last primer we use before paint.
We hope you enjoy!
Much love,
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

Fairing. Instead of using the flexible yellow applicator from the autobody industry, meant to accommodate curved car surfaces, look at drywall tools for walls. Those metal flexible joint knives are meant for flat surfaces. 6 and 12" stainless versions would cut your need for multiple layers and sandings. And stay a a 45 degree angle to the wall for finishing. This gives you more control over the amount of material you apply. Less angle when you're looking to fill and blend over a larger depression.

I totally get all of the extra care that is required when assembling things like the prop shaft tubes and ensuring they are perfect. However these are things certainly as a viewer I would have thought a "kit" would have addressed making assembly easier for the installers? Again though its not a criticism of the manufacturer its just a reality that a build like this is not simply a "snap together" or "place and play" project. Incredible work as always you two. 😊

So, I have been a fan of MJ Sailing since (I think?) 2018/2019. I am constantly in admiration as to your determined dedication in your efforts to produce such a beautiful catameran. The sheer willpower to move on day after day is staggering. Your attention to detail (which never seems to have let up) is breathtaking. But then again, why should I be surprised when you had previously demonstrated this with the rebuild of "Elements". The pair of you - I hold in awe.

Love your project. Just an idea, but to keep that line straight, try hot gluing a board beneath it, then running a Sanding block above it to get the top plane flat. Move the board, reglue it above the line, then sand in the same manner, below the board, to keep the line perfectly straight. Just a thought.

Assuming you have already checked the motor beds are on centreline of hulls can you not measure the distance from the centreline of the two engine beds and the centreline of the two stern tubes to check if parallel. Set front of engine beds level to each other and stern tubes level to each other. Then the degree of inclination can be set and the motors shimmed for best alignment. I am sure you will be doing a better alignment on your boat than most manufacturers are doing on the boats they are building. Keep the good work up !

Could I recommend that you use laser safe glasses when working with ANY laser source... at 2:45 the line right across your face and eyes.... Such a huge amount of quality work so far. At 14:54, how about a quick light squirt of primer to more easily see surface and any imperfections. Subbed here.

i was in the custom paint business for a while and I always use hard blocks when sanding, even curved surfaces. Foam blocks only follow the waviness you are trying to eliminate. I would use long doll rods like a cut off broom stick to sand those coves, wrapping the sand paper around the rod about 6" long would speed up your intended results. Do the long surfaces first and then touch up the corners. Remember, it is a boat not a grand piano, good enough is the result and move forward.

Keep believing guys. Week by week, you are making progress. I won't ask how many times you have wondered why you didn't buy a 'ready to sail' boat, but it will be worth it in the end, and you will have a way better boat than that aforementioned 'ready to sail' boat, that will have been in for numerous refits by now.

Measure down and attach a straight guide above the line, equal to your plastic spreader hitting the corner. Carve a single spreader into the shape you wish, so that you can hold it at a 40 to 50° angle and get your line using the guide for spacing. Butter up the seam gently, barely a skim coat. And then carefully run your line in a single even pull. You need to gently pull away about 3/4 of the way down and switch to the other side after cleaning your plastic scraper. Come back from the other side with the same motion and as you cross your previous lines end gently peel back via angle rotation and then lift away in one spot so that it is easy to sand flat. Ideally there's a slight pucci Audi where the over out is. I thought about changing the poochie outie, but thought better of it😅

Eternal sanding and fairing is why you use liners inside the hull or you spackle spray it just like mud work in a home. Easy to finish or you get the final finish in a MOLD!!! The boat yard has a moulded engine base, with a steel Jig for shaft alignment , so engine bay is now done in 1.5 days , The first max 44 with inboards we did very similar to the way MJ is doing it took around 5 days as we where also sorting rudder and options. It explains why many builders only offer sail drives, very easy to place in.
