Why don't you simply take a more direct, honest approach? The language used is in no way faulty, and not even doing anything you accuse it of, but you apparently have no idea about media interpretations as you cant even use the term strawman correctly, nor understand that any sort of interpretation using "maybe the film neither intended nor apparently was constructed to be XYZ" never moved beyond 8th grade english class.

As a lover of this channel, I'll admit I've never been thrilled by his titling. For me, if I don't recognize anything in the thumbnail, I have no clue what movie is about, since the title never states it. As a result, and I feel like it might be the case for other people as well, if I have no clue then I likely won't click and watch... I don't know if I would call them click bait, though.... and I personal LOATHE that tactic, blacklisting channels for doing it. It's more a thought inducing opinion/hot take. However, my personal preference would be that either the thumbnail or the title include the movie name. If in the thumbnail, it doesn't have to be distracting, just big enough to read. In the title, well, ideally it would be at the end - _"hey, they certainly nailed the camera work at least | Midsommar"._ Problem is, his titles tend to be wordy, and now the movie name STILL wouldn't be visible (at least on mobile). His approach is different though, and it's leaving enough of an impression on the YT cinema community to spawn copycats... so he's clearly doing something right! 😊 Just my 2¢...

I would love to see your take on Speed Racer (2008). It's so divisive, while being so technically excellent. Why do people who hate it have such a strong reaction? What amazes me about the film is that despite everything going on, I never feel lost or confused on situational positioning or physical relationships between things in the scene. Something I do feel with most modern "action" films (MCU, etc).
@kezia80273 ай бұрын
I think at least part of it is down to the general public's stance on "kids media" and Speed Racer is a kids cartoon, so therefore it cannot provide anything of value to people who are not kids. To be clear, I don't agree with this stance, but it is one that I see regularly for many similar films and media. Simply being discounted from the start because they are "childrens media" instead of examining the media and making a judgement after the fact, people make a judgement, and then don't watch the media because of that judgement.

@mattprintz84883 ай бұрын
@@NateArchibaldWithTheFro You may not like the stylistic decisions, but they were all made for a specific reason and executed flawlessly. There was a vision, and the vision was executed flawlessly, IMHO. It definitely does not look like "the real world", because it isn't. The colors pop. The textures are all a little too glossy. The clothes and hair too perfect. Nothing feels "lived in". This is all on purpose. This is all part of the vision. And it's fine fantastically. Saying that you didn't like Speed Racer because it's ugly is not too far from saying you don't like Schindler's List because it was shot in black and white.
@NateArchibaldWithTheFro3 ай бұрын
@@mattprintz8488 Sure. It’s absolutely “a vision”. It’s just a bad vision. Trying to directly turn a kids cartoon into live action works on paper, but in practice just doesn’t work. Take a look at Son of the Mask. My problems with Speed Racer aren’t just visual. It’s flat, uninteresting characters with bad dialogue. Poor performances from legendary actors like John Goodman and Susan Surandon who clearly had no clear direction from the Wachowskis. The fact that even as a kid I didn’t like it, which is who the movie is actually tailored towards. And yes, that it looks like shit. Intense visual stimulation with bad visual effects and irritating sound design means every element of this film is a disaster. Schindler’s List is a beautiful work of art. If it was filmed with a Nintendo DS camera, it still would’ve looked better.
@mattprintz84883 ай бұрын
@@NateArchibaldWithTheFro Your reply here is a perfect example of my point behind my question. You have such a strong reaction to it. We are divided on the film in a very fundamental way. This divide seems uncrossable. Why? How does one film elicit such polarized opinions. You are, of course, free to hate the film. I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. However, I will say that your assertion of "bad visual effects" is inaccurate and unfair. The visual effects are ground-breaking and superbly executed. You are free to not ENJOY the effects, of course, but just because you don't enjoy them doesn't mean they are "bad". Claiming so is unfair to the visual effects artists who worked on the film.

Overall, I thought you were kind of doing a very similar style. It's unwarranted though, because as an artist myself, and even the great filmmakers that you cover here, imitate as well. I am happy for you though and love that you found your style. I hope I may one day find mine as well.

I admire midsommar very much for how technical and beautiful it is. It'd have been a great film to me if the violent parts weren't so over the top that it actually made me crack up. To me certain parts of it just got absurdly cartoony, which is not what I think they were going for. Really took me out of the film.

What is the title and artist of the bluegrass-style music track that starts at 4:36? I tried to Shazam it but no luck.

Great video! Though the title makes it sound like you dislike the movie apart from the cinematography

movies like this build a great atmosphere, but i think the problem is that in order to build such a great atmosphere and be this technical and "artsy" you have to be kinda disconnected from societal norms, so when all the characters in this movie act completely ridiculously, you feel like the person who wrote it has never met another person in their lives lol. A lot of moments were so ridiculous that it made me roll my eyes right out my skull.

While I don't think Midsommar is a terrible film (it gave me the same impression as _The Witch_ did, although that film excels in ways Midsommar wishes it could), I do think it suffers from the astounding success of its predecessor, _Hereditary._ That film was such a breath of fresh air that myself anticipating Midsommar to be on the same level may have been a bit disingenuous. I like Midsommar now more than I did on a first watch, and I still have issues with Hereditary (like the ending being so campy and silly after a seemingly endless deluge of soul crushing,) but I prefer the latter over the former as a film, and I prefer the former over the latter as far as visuals are conerned. Midsommar is a very, very pretty film, and that contrast is what makes it still worth a watch for me. Edit: The ending of Hereditary is like the aftermath of enduring a funeral for someone you really missed. As you're lamenting this terrible loss and what you'll no longer have, someone sends you a video of a cat farting.

It's a film I can appreciate, but don't enjoy. From Aster's three films, he seems to be getting better both technically and creatively, but getting worse as a storyteller and entertainer. I can sit all day and point out the amazing sequences and thought put into his shots, but equally I can sit all day and nitpick the story and silly characters. He's an odd one, is Ari.

There’s a story that Burt Reynolds told about the making of Boogie Nights, and how up his own ass Paul Thomas Anderson was. They were shooting some scene, and PT Anderson kept going around the set, boasting that NO ONE has ever attempted a shot like this and how he is pioneering cinema. Burt Reynolds stopped him and named about five movies with that same exact shot, which pissed PT Anderson off greatly. That’s how I feel Ari Aster is.

I've been saying for a while that he'd be better off not writing his own scripts. Keep directing. Great director. Find a good screenwriter to work with, please.

Still one of my favorite films of the last ten years and one of the best film-going experiences I've had with a large group. I feel like Midsommar is such a good barometer for a) how dark your sense of humor is b) the depth of trauma you've experienced in your life (related to a) and c) have you ever been in a toxic relationship and do you have perspective on it now

This movie was great. The brutalness of showing the old lady jump off the cliff then when their friends start coming up missing and then you see what they are used for in the ceremony and of course the sex scene with all the young and elderly women was insane. The movie is just insane. It starts of slow and before you know it like a frog boiling in a pot of water and just sitting there we are just sitting there watching in awe everything that passes till the end and how the lead goes from a timid woman to the new leader while she watches her boyfriend burn to death lol. Love this movie.

No way then Beau is Afraid controlled information by never telling you what is real or not. Meaning Nolan has time, but Aster has information, and in terms of what’s relevant today, Aster knows the future of fear. I can’t wait for Eddington to come out. I’m sure it won’t be scary or make me cry.
