This happens from time to time, that's why there are backups in place, as indicated by the video. Usually commercially available weather radios aren't programmed to activate on these SAME tones, but can be manually enabled in the settings. Generally these are picked up by monitoring equipment which notifies the weather office of a problem, which is why there is no voice announcement, just tones.

Slightly nerdy answer: These are “DTMF Tones” said tones are usually & mostly used on phone lines, if you’ve ever used an analog phone or some newer phones, you’ll hear these tones whilst calling or dialling somebody, they are also used on modems. Somebody mentioned in the comments that this is a “Transmitter Carrier” tone, witch is partially true but also partially untrue, these tones are transmitted through NWR when the main frequency transmitter fails/turns off for some unexplained reason (or so I believe), this doesn’t happen much because of well, how powerful the NWS is, hope this clears stuff up on a 12 year old video 😂
@FairPlay13710 жыл бұрын
Great catch! Normally I don't think those tones were supposed to be heard over the air, unless something went horribly wrong.

If I remember correctly, it’s just noises use to verify the transmitter is working then within 15 minutes the weather station should be back, or even shorter (as demonstrated in the video)

I did a bit of reading. From what I found, the “transmitter” codes haven’t ever been used. Plus people are mentioning cords from the back of the radio. Idk. It’s an answer we most likely won’t get.
@McPikeVHS11 ай бұрын
@@CSW994Said cords are most likely power cords. If they were self activation cables, it would be hard to activate all 3 radios.
@CSW99411 ай бұрын
I take back that transmitter codes thing. Apparently there’s an office in KY I believe that relays them. When they relayed them, it was just the first three tones then instantly EOMs, then continuing the broadcast from the start. They did this three times.
