With Brahms looking over my shoulder! The great Johannes passed away today 125 years ago. I've always loved the romantic power, emotion and beauty of his music.
Here is a well-known excerpt from the last movement of his 4th Symphony, an excerpt that appears often on orchestral violin audition lists.
A side-note: in 1895, my great-grandfather Samuel Leventhal (a violinist and later concertmaster of the Hartford Symphony) saw Brahms conducting this symphony in Leipzig with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Samuel was 15 at the time. He recalled later of Brahms: "He was a stuffy little figure with gray hair, wearing an ill-fitting, baggy suit. He got a tremendous reception...I was only a boy. It's only in retrospect that I appreciate the great privilege it was to hear Brahms conduct."
