Once fans picked up on the date, lots of theories started flying around, but the Duffer Brothers admitted they totally forgot that that was his birthday and no one in the cast/crew ever realized it either.

To be honest, i just hope the Duffers handle this accurately, i mean, it would be pretty weird that when they finally revealed that Will is gay the other characters dont get shocked by it, because it is the 80s, it would feel pretty "forced" if his friends accept it inmediately, maybe Jonathan and Joyce are the only ones who can accept him inmediately without being forced, but mike and the others still should have a reaction to it, and maybe take a few episodes to develop their acceptance. Remember, it is not the present, it was a different era, one of the worst moments for not being straight. With Steve and Robin i think it was different, Steve is an adult, thinks differently and os a very caring person, maybe Dustin could accept Will before the others because of his personality, but at least Mike should get an awkward reaction. Just my opinion though, they are the pros at making characters and plots, im just saying that i think it would be weird and feel fake if no one reacts in a sort of negative way in the beggining.

He did answer the question. Do you think they put anywhere in the script "Will is straight" or "Will is gay" or "Will is bi". The only way to find out is with his actions. So far we don't really know anything about who he likes. So the answer is "Who knows". I doubt the writers cared whether he was gay or not. I doubt they even considered his sexuality. And that's fine. Even if they did they probably just considered him the same sexuality as themselves because most people try to relate to characters as similar to them. I'd say the answer is more "Who cares". Doesn't really change anything. Having an 80s show with a gay character would be quite difficult though. It'd be very strange if all the main characters were fine with it. Although it could be interesting since all the main characters have been through weirder shit so they'll probably not care. Regardless it'd be an odd direction to take the show.

@@vampxm I meant it more about a gay main character. I just think people are gonna accuse the show of being unrealistic or something, which is funny considering it's fiction. But even I don't like gay characters being shoved in shows for no reason. It always has to sorta be adressed as the elephant in the room so the show becomes about being gay. You never see shows where theres a plot all about somebody being straight. But that's more of a problem with the world tbf. Being gay should just be a nothing thing like having black hair, or green eyes or some other unimportant thing. The best show I've ever seen that's about a gay relationship is Feel Good. I think it did really well to avoid the usual annoying writing and bad handling of characters that comes with forcing in gay characters to be inclusive. Anyways, I'm a bisexual cis white male and I'm happy with Will just having his sexuality never adressed in the show since it hasn't come up so far. I like the show being about what it is about. Fun action horror comedy. I feel like adding Will being gay as a central part of the plot would be an odd writing choice. And I would just end up hating all the drama around the show. It'd no longer feel like another world. It would feel like a debate between a bunch of homophobes and a bunch of screenwriting nerds. The only things we'd hear about the show would be about that. It wouldn't be like watching a show anymore. It'd feel like watching a script. Or at least this is what I suspect would happen for me personally. You know that feeling when you can just see straight through to the script, like when a character does an exposition dump? Anyways the one gay character we've got, Robin, is great. And the way they've handled it in terms of other characters who are from the 80s is nice because of the way shes only really come out to one other character. In the 80s it'd be like a mental illness right? They'd want Will seek help for it. They'd probably say it's part of his PTSD. I think it's much more likely to offend gay people. Regardless of all this I don't feel that strongly about it. They were just my initial thoughts. Maybe they'll do it. Maybe it'll work really well.

I mean, I see it this way: Will cried because everyone is growing up around him, he still feels as if he's a child. the amount of childhood trauma he's gone through is insane and that is shown on the show (him getting teary-eyed, crying a lot, angry outbursts and REGRESSIVE behavior where Will literally returns to an earlier stage of development than the rest of his cohort. ). These all showcase long-term symptoms of CHILDHOOD trauma. For me it's not about sexuality, it's about trauma and how it has affected him. Sexuality does not have to be the answer to everything. In my personal life, I can relate to Will's character about not wanting to grow up and not understanding why everyone else is getting into relationships at that age b/c of traumatic experiences. I definitely think Will is gay and I'd love to see that happen in the show. His character has definitely been queer-coded since season 1. Even in the shows pitch book he was described as struggling with his sexual identity. I really hope that's the case because watching him grow throughout the show honestly felt like I was watching myself. When I was younger I was really closed off around people except for a few really special friends because I was so uncomfortable with understanding my identity and trying to work out who I was in a really unsupportive (homophobic) environment. It's like watching a clone of a younger me lol, down to the personality, his interests and how he interacts with other people. I can happily admit that I'm not straight now, and I really hope that Will (if he is gay) gets to that point too. Watching him feel so isolated and misunderstood by other people really made me feel less alone.

I mean, I see it this way: How will acts e.g. him crying because everyone is growing up around him is so understandable at that age (in s1 they are 12 yrs old, in s4 he is 14 yrs old). He still feels as if he's a child and it is explained by the amount of childhood trauma that he's gone through. The show LITERALLY portrays long-term symptoms of CHILDHOOD trauma; him getting teary-eyed, crying a lot, angry outbursts, and REGRESSIVE behavior where Will literally returns to an earlier stage of development than the rest of his cohort. For me it's not about sexuality, it's about trauma and how it has affected him. Sexuality does not have to be the answer to everything. In my personal life, I can relate to Will's character about not wanting to grow up and not understanding why everyone else is getting into relationships at that age b/c of traumatic childhood experiences.
