Age of Economics

Күн бұрын

Age of Economics: in the first part of this project a diverse group of global thinkers answers 8 fundamental questions about economics and capitalist civilization. (Interview number 6)
0:00 - Prologue
01:31 - Intro
01:49 - 1. Why does economics matter?
07:33 - 2. What are the differences between economic science and economic engineering?
18:35 - 3. What role does economics play in society? Does it serve the common good?
26:42 - 4. Economics provides answers to problems related to markets, efficiency, profits, consumption and economic growth. Does economics do a good job in addressing the other issues people care about: climate change and the wider environment, the role of technology in society, issues of race and class, pandemics, etc.?
30:46 - 5. As we live in an age of economics and economists - in which economic developments feature prominently in our lives and economists have major influence over a wide range of policy and people - should economists be held accountable for their advice?
33:54 - 6. Does economics explain Capitalism? How would you define Capitalism?
40:22 - 7. No human system to date has so far been able to endure indefinitely - not ancient Egypt or Rome, not Feudal China or Europe, not the USSR. What about global Capitalism: can it survive in its current form?
44:54 - 8. Is Capitalism, or whatever we should call the current system, the best one to serve the needs of humanity, or can we imagine another one?

@christianerehem He is remarkable in this respect, not just the enormity of his erudition. Good luck to anyone trying to find any holes in his reasoning or his references. But there is one thing I do not understand which is, why is he not as concerned about, for simplicity's sake, 'woke' as I am? Does he see it as just part and parcel of the breakdown of our 'sense-making'? Which he does cite as one of the three greatest threats to our survival?

It's almost impossible to believe that he's 94, with how clear-headed and articulate he still is. I'm sure he has some old-age issues, like short-term memory problems, but it wouldn't surprise me if even those are much less severe than most people his age. Maybe this is the result of a life dedicated to thinking about truth, instead of the usual nonsense most people fill their heads with!

@@humanbeing5300 Chomsky has critics. That's for sure. What's of note, however, is how corrupt his critics are, and the more critical they are, the more corrupted they are. That's point number one. For point number two, I'm going to put it as a question. So, even if we accept that Chomski's critics are corrupt, does their questioning, bashing, etc., raise the level of the discussion? Of course not. Do you know why? If you think you know, please feel free to comment.

Noam Chomsky dislikes being pedestaled I imagine, despite the fierce veracity of what he speaks, about the 19th century through 21st century United States enslavement of workers, the embargoes US have been imposing on the gulf and those of the countries whose people are undergoing immense economic hardship. Chomsky also has the passion to be challenged and questioned whilst he strongly urges against different forms of capitalism that have proven as nefarious as amounting to disempowerment of labourers and their unionisation. Noam has a plenty more intellectual honesty and kindness to offer to the spheres of humanitarian education, as he is forthright in his appeals for the underdogs and underprivileged. May his students follow in his footsteps and continue to question the authorities of neoliberalism, their imperialistic structures.

I definitely agree with the idea of CAREFUL implementation of any change on large scale. This is in a stark contrast with CARELESS or RADICAL change implementation ideas. I would add also the consideration of time scale. Observe the implemented change on a small scale in different time scales (over few generations, at least) before you announce you have something to offer to the public. Importantly, always start the experimentation on yourself.

In fact, there is no strictly economic or market mechanism whereby wages (the price of the right to use labor-power for a time) co-vary with the value productivity of *labor*. The whole *point* of the capitalist purchase and use of people's labor-power for a time to extract and appropriate labor with which to produce commodities for sale at a profit is to NOT pay pari passu more for the use of labor-power to appropriate more actual value-producing labor.

Joseph Schumpeter, the great Austrian economist was an important and influential proponent and developer of the then emerging branch of economics called Economic History. He contrasted Socialism Capitalism and Democracy in his book from the mid 30s with that title. He contrasted the two economic systems and wrote that pure capitalism was the superior driver of growth. He posited that the undoing of capitalism would be the greed and self serving of the entrepreneurs who drive the capitalist economy. Socialism, on the other hand, is much more responsive to the social and physical needs of the people yet is weaker as an economic driver. The solution he proposed was based on the Hegelian Dialect which is; Thesis versus Antithesis yields a Synthesis. In other words, a blending of the two systems in a new Social Democracy will emerge from a combination of regulated capitalism and socialism that will be a society that provide economic security and prosperity along with a safety net for all of society, sometime in a future democracy. If you can imagine it, some day it might happen.

My Personal List of Questions to Noam Chomsky: Professor Chomsky, could you please outline your views on the concept of "universal grammar" and its implications for linguistic theory? What led you to your critique of behaviorism, and how do you perceive its relevance today in the field of psychology? Could you expound on the 'Chomsky hierarchy' and its application in the current understanding of formal languages? Can you share your thoughts on the connection between language development and cognitive processes? What role do you believe language plays in shaping our individual and collective identities? How has the field of linguistics evolved since you first began your research, and where do you see it heading in the future? Can you elaborate on your views regarding the 'poverty of the stimulus' argument? What are your thoughts on the use of artificial intelligence in studying linguistic and cognitive processes? Could you comment on how social factors influence language development and variation? How do you view the relationship between philosophy, psychology, and linguistics in understanding the human mind? You've often spoken about the role of media in shaping public opinion. Could you elaborate on this? How do you relate your political ideologies with your theories in linguistics and cognitive science? Can you share your insights on how language might influence our understanding and perception of reality? What's your take on the current state of interdisciplinary studies between linguistics, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence? Could you share your thoughts on the linguistic relativity hypothesis? You've critiqued the 'innateness hypothesis' in language acquisition. Can you elaborate on your views? Can you comment on the importance of critical thinking in today's educational systems? What are your views on the concept of 'free will' in the context of linguistic behavior? Could you discuss the importance of syntax in our understanding of language structure? How do you see the role of neuroscience in furthering our understanding of language and cognition? What are your thoughts on how digital communication is affecting language use and evolution? Could you elaborate on your views about the relationship between language, thought, and culture? How do you view the impact of your work in the field of cognitive science and beyond? Could you discuss the challenges you've faced in your career and how they've shaped your work? Finally, Professor Chomsky, what advice would you give to aspiring linguists and cognitive scientists today?

Why do you present this(with no date for this interview) as if it was just done recently? This is almost 4 years old. The most important part of anything that is downloaded onto the internet(other than the actual content) is the date of the event, interview, report, etc. Why would you, as someone who cares enough to download something they must believe will be informative and of value, not see the value in identifying when this interview took place? This simple standard of properly dating something really should be understood by everyone by now so it's quite maddening to see that it is not. Even in journalistic circles.

Thanks David for your comment. Why we didn’t specify that this interview wasn’t done recently? Honestly, one of the reasons was that we didn’t think that this was really important. Every video on KZbin is old in the moment when it is published, it doesn’t mean that it is loosing it’s importance or it’s value. The aim of our non-profit project is a discussion about fundamental questions (e.g.: Why does economics matters?), not about daily newsfeeds. Another one is that we simply forgot. Anyways, in the description the date of recording was added. By the way: time is relative, yes, but not too much: the interview with Prof. Chomsky was recorded in December 2020, that means from today 2 years and 3 months ago. Not almost 4. Anyways, thanks again for your contribution.

The job of economists should be to help society maximize material welfare/standard of living (maximum outputs with minimum inputs). In reality, the vast majority of them think their job is to redistribute income from the high earners/highly productive to the low earners/low productive.

That's a funny comment. Economists have been extremely unsuccessful, haven't they, if you evaluate their jobs by that metric: "redistribute income from the high earners/highly productive to the low earners/low productive."

@@clarestucki5151 It's a ludicrous notion. I'm no big fan of Keynesian economics, but the ushering in of the neoclassical period by 'economists' such as Milton Friedman has meant, empirically speaking, that they've done exactly the opposite, and to argue that they 'thought' they were doing otherwise is pure delusion.

The east of Europe was after the war on socialist system for more then 40 years and didn't work as well ,no neoliberal economy. The capitalism system is just from the middle of 90s which has been made some good improvement in the social and infrastructure life. It is not perfect, but what's the alternative? Make everything belong to the states?

@@lelz0394 , LOL Well Chomsky does not have to worry about supposed, ' wage slavery ', himself, because he became a multi-millionaire via the very same Capitalist/Corporate System that he loves to bash so much! I wonder how much of Chomsky's own money he donated to all the, ' wage slaves ', at MIT, or at the publishers of his books, or at the venues where he lectures? Strange he never talks about that... 😀

Love how you types can never refute what he says directly, or provide an argument. Only a vague criticism of his “rhetoric,” where once you hear the word “socialism” you can immediately discredit him and stop listening because you’ve built a mental wall around these discussions and are too closed minded to even consider what he says.

I have a master in mathematical finance, so it wasn’t so easy to get me convinced to begin an investment without me carrying out proper research on her. I had her broker ID checked and she’s fully verified! So I began with a few bucks, only to get huge returns in a month. I reinvested and now I get long term monthly returns… So glad I don’t rely on pay checks anymore.
