As a German I see a huge difference between using the phrase I love you- ich liebe dich, and I have Love for you- ich hab dich lieb. The latter one is much more casual and used for friends and family, while saying that you love someone is reserved for your partner/spouse.
@laurentvere7142 Жыл бұрын
In Spanish we have something similar "Te quiero" and "Te amo" The first one is not that *powerful (to put it in some way) like the other one. You take a lot of time to say "Te amo", is very special.
@fridaschulte4051 Жыл бұрын
As another german I personally do think you can say "Ich liebe dich" to friends or family but it would be very intentional phrasing that expresses a very deep Connection.
@VeraCasaca Жыл бұрын
@@laurentvere7142 the same in Portuguese. "Amo te" is very deep and only used for partner/children. "Adoro te" is lighter and casual.

The translation would be to be fond of someone in English but it’s not really used very often when speaking directly to someone. I think love starts to lose meaning when it’s used in so many ways. Machs gut 😊.

I actually loved watching Jack go through interviews and get rejections because I too was struggling with the job search at the time. And I’ve never seen anyone share the before and after of a job interview, people usually don’t show this part in case they don’t get the gig so it was unusual🤷🏻♀️
Aw the world needs more jack’s; he’s passionate, kind, talented and encourages me to work harder and read more. The entire interview was so pleasant to listen to. You can tell Jack reads a lot with his great wisdom and thoughts. So many interviewers could learn by Nathaniel, such a soothing ambience you managed to create between the two of you. Native German speaker here: it‘s kinda true what you said about Liebe. you don‘t say „Ich liebe dich“ to just anyone. If you do, it‘s a big deal. But, if you like something a lot, younger people also say „Ich lieb‘s“, which is an abbreviated version of „I love it“. So in a romantic sense, Liebe is kind of a big word, but in terms of liking something it does get used more and more often, typically by younger people.

At the age of 9 I got tested for Dyslexia, which turned out to be the case. Now I'm 21 and because of Jack and two classmates who are into reading and the joy I see when they are talking about books, I decided to find my genre to give reading a second chance. Thank you both for referencing how the education system can ruin the love of reading. It certainly did for me - being told to read a particular book and then read only from page x to page y and then there will be a quiz. I can only remember 1 book I really enjoyed in high school (in the mid 70s) and that was The Grapes of Wrath. We were assigned to read this over Christmas break and I put it off until the last 2 days of break and then binged on it. These days there would be outrage from assigning a book like that over break. I know this as I was a HS science teacher and heard about the tirades other teachers received from parents when the teacher only suggested a study plan for science class that could be done over the Christmas break. Fortunately in retirement I have found a book club with lifelong readers who open up authors and genres new to me., along with Booktube creators like Jack, of course.

This is totally off topic but, in defense of TikTok, I think it depends on what "side" of the app you find yourself on. There are meaningful conversations and relationships being built there but it's a different flavor from KZbin. I think the stitches and the duets allow more voices to be added to the conversations being had and it adds to the nuance. I've noticed that especially since the length of videos have increased. I've learned a lot about media literacy (oddly enough) from interacting with the way news circulates there. In the end, I think it's valuable but not for the same things you'd turn to something like a KZbin video for. TikTok is a jumping off point for a lot of topics. It gives you a direction to go in research and it might fill in some tiny holes but I don't think it's something you should turn to for every take ever. I hope that made sense lol. I loved this whole conversation! You two are a breath of fresh air :)

As a German person, ,,liebe” is such a strong word because we have ,,hab dich liebe” which isn’t really translatable but means ,,I have love for you” which you say to friends and family and often in the beginning of a relationship, while I love you -ich liebe dich, is an exception for your partner which you also only say after a few months normally. So normally you don’t hear oder say it often which is why it’s so valuable and ,,extreme” and I really like it
@KaraSophiaSommer Жыл бұрын
German here - I don't think that we have more words to describe the different stages between like and love - it's just that we don't use Liebe as much. I think for most people it's reserved for the highest form of feeling love, mostly for a romantic partner. I remember how odd I found it that english speaking kids would tell their parents 'i love you' - I would never tell my parents 'Ich liebe dich', but more like 'Ich habe dich lieb' which could be translated as I like you very much or I care for you. But even then, I guess, we're still germans and not really prone to verbalizing emotions in general so that might play into it as well. Hope my gibberish makes sense. :)

Regarding the comment on the difference between using the word 'love' in English and German: I think it largely stems from the fact that you don't say 'I love you in German' to literally anyone other than your romantic partner. You would tell other people 'you are important to me' or 'Ich hab dich lieb' which literally would translate to "I have you love" (it doesn't really work in English). But because the declaration of loving someone is rarely used, I think we also translate this to things and items. We would say 'this is great' 'I really like this' 'this is my favourite', but not 'I love it'. Fun fact: the literal translation of 'being in love with someone' - 'verliebt', actually holds much less value in German, than in English. Its more like having a crush on someone. That sometimes leads to very interesting dubbing problems in TV shows from the UK/US.. when the translators weren't quite aware of the different meaning abroad
