Күн бұрын

This year's Nobel Laureates in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics speak in the same building in Stockholm where they have received their awards. The Laureates talk about the discoveries for which they've been honored, how they can be applied in a practical way, and how they reached this summit of academic achievement.

a proud year for Yale, two Nobel winners, Prof. James Rothman for Medicine and Prof. Rob Shiller for Economics, whose seminars I happened to attend a few when I was at Yale.

The thing is there is a time constraint... imagine curious nobel laureates talking and being asked about their work,,, ya that'll be a weekend retreat.

The question about whether scientists do a good job communicating with the public is kind of weird. Firstly this neglects the certainty that most people consume their science news from journalists not scientists. So you could as well have asked who thinks that journalists do a good job as intermediaries between scientists and the public and that would have been a more sensible question. A completely separate question is _who thinks the public do a good job of interpreting the information that science offers?_ There has never been greater public access to frontier science than today. As a member of the public I would say the onus is not only on the scientists or the journalists but the public too. Wanting to be spoon fed your science by a scientist or a journalist is a lousy way to think. We are responsible for our own learning. If you look for the learning tools and resources they are always there. So I would happily have voted the opposite way to the majority of the audience. Scientists are doing a tremendous job of informing the public, but the public are largely not interested and that's not the fault of the scientists, that's the fault of a public who, by and large, are lazy and who expect to have to make no effort to understand their world.
