We go to Manila to speak with Filipina Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa about Monday's presidential election in the Philippines, where Ferdinand Marcos Jr. - the only son of the late Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos - appears to have won in a landslide alongside his running mate, the daughter of current President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa says the Marcos campaign used social media to cover up the historical memory of the family's brutal policies and the uprising in 1986 that ultimately ended Marcos's two-decade dictatorship. "These elections are emblematic of the impact of concerted information operations of disinformation where it literally changed history in front of our eyes," says Ressa. Her forthcoming book is titled "How to Stand Up to a Dictator: The Fight for Our Future."

I beg to disagree that Marcos Jr. used the media to rebrand the Marcos name. I was in the EDSA revolution when his dictator father was ousted but I voted for the young Marcos , why ? because I'm tired of the past Presidents that are so corrupt ( except Rodrigo Duterte ) and based on the random local citizens interview during the election campaign asked why they are voting Marcos Jr. , they wanted for a Change the older folks would reminisce the peaceful and orderly life during the late Marcos reign but of course on the other side of the coin , Marcos Sr. was brutal to his political opponents , I don't want to equate the Father's rule to the young Marcos it's prejudice to say that the young Marcos will follow the path of how his father ruled ( being a dictator ). I don't think Marcos Jr will sit as President to avenge his father. I'm sure he will do for the betterment of the Filipino people and finally clear the bad image of the Marcoses in the past. The young Marcos has 31M votes under his belt got to respect the voice of the majority and give this young man a chance.

I totally agree on what she said that if you don’t have facts then you can’t have truth and without truth then you can’t have trust. These facts can easily be provided in schools but because of the poor education system in the Philippines, most of the people can be easily manipulated by wrong information.

So let me get this straight: Marcos total combined budget in his 20 year rule: P600B (numbers according to Rappler) Achievements: Built Heart Center, Lung Center, National Kidney Institute, Cultural Center of the Phils., Nayong Pilipino Park, People's Park in the Sky, Folks Art Theaters, National Arts Center, PICC, San Juanico Bridge, over 200,000 housing units under BLISS program, 20 power plants, build/improve roads and highways, Light Railway Transit (first in Southeast Asia). Cory, her supporters, Ms. Ressa and the western media: Marcos is CORRUPT!!! Cory Aquino's total budget in her 6 year rule: P1.3 TRILLION (again, numbers according to Rappler) Achievements: Changed the constitution, Renamed Manila International Airport to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Built monuments of her husband in many public spaces and renamed some schools in the country after her late husband. Cory, her supporters, Ms. Ressa and the western media: Marcos is CORRUPT!!! Am i missing something here? I think a lot of people got duped. :D

Yes you missed one critical thing…With her 1.3 Trillion budget…They printed a lot of P500 bills with her husband on it in 1987, which led to the ridiculous inflation!!! Cory, Ressa and media : “Marcos is corrupt…”

Actually you are missing quite a lot. Marcos borrowed heavily from the world bank to build that infrastructure you mentioned and had no clear plan on how to pay that money back. This problem was compounded by the fact Marcos had installed his cronies who lacked the qualifications to actually do the job they were assigned and took kickbacks for each of those major building projects. As a result the national debt rose from $360 milllion in 1962 to $28 billion in 1985. His last 5 years in government saw negative GDP growth year on year and soaring unemployment rate. Apart from what you mentioned of Cory Aquino's achievements she also managed to grow the the economy and return to positive GDP growth. Unfortunately for the Philippines, this debt and systemic corruption throughout all levels of government institutionalised by Marcos and his cronies has held the Philippines back meaning more people have had to live in poverty for longer.

How many years has it been since these projects were put to service? more than 36 years? isn't that a very very good ROI for a govt project? The systemic corruption did not end when Marcos left because when Cory took power, she brought with her, her own set of cronies. See why 'Kamaganak Inc" or "Relatives Inc" took over the philippine economy during Cory years. And that has been the precedent ever since. Every new administration brings with them their own set of cronies. And only a fool would tell you that it's not as bad as it is today as it was back then. Corruption actually become worse in all levels of govt when Marcos was ousted. Anyway, i still don't get why the west, MSM and so many Cory supporters blasts Marcos for corruption when Cory couldn't account for the P1.3 Trillion pesos she spent on her 6 years of presidency. That's US$26 Billion in today's exchange rate spent in 6 years. And we blame Marcos for raising national debt from $362M to $28B in 23 years with so many projects? If the Marcos years emptied the govt coffers of any funds, where do you think Cory got the P1.3T if not for more borrowing? She is as guilty of all the wrongs that she accuse Marcos of doing and it is as clear as day if looked at without any political prejudice.

This fake news is not subject to the same journalistic standards and integrity as traditional media and therefore is often unverified and rarely fact checked. A simple fact check would have revealed that the national debt under Corazon Aquino never reached P1 Trillion and in fact most of that debt was incurred by the Marcos dictatorship (US$28 billion).How about great infrastructure like the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant? Mr Pascual you have been taken for a fool by social media "news" but you are not alone particularly in the Philippines. I suggest that if you are going to continue to glean your political information from these sources you should fact check the info before becoming part of the ignorant chain that spread the publication of lies and misinformation.
