This year's Nobel Prize for Physics illustrates splendidly why the respect, and understanding on what is meant by, "Physics", has reached a new low.

Could be Bill gates too. 'Physicists use computer and OS' so it's quite justified!

Honestly, what is the connection between AI and real-world physics? What breakthroughs do we know more about the physical world with AI?
@RocíoMorlánLuna4 күн бұрын
A lot, but the principal knowledge about this is that computer doesn't work anymore in a binary system, now we have the quantum computers

“Dr. Hinton’s Boltzmann machine could be described with physics. But instead of spin, they used the Boltzmann equation, named for the statistical physics pioneer Ludwig Boltzmann. The equation describes the energy of a system.” Source NYT October 8th, 2024 Online.

Physics is now claiming computer science?

Yeah. Should be Mathematics, but there is no Nobel for that.

This year's award is completely deserved, of course. But it's about the statement referred to. Use and develop AI to study physics. It's the difference between a cart and an automobile.

What's next, peace Nobel prize to Sam Altman? (that'd make more sense since the peace Nobel prize always has been kind of a joke anyways)

AI may become better than humans in linear left brain intelligence. But that is nothing to worry about. AI will do our work faster. But make no mistake that AI has ZERO emotional intelligence and has no mechanism to develop it. Also AI is silicon based, and to do same magnitude of computation as carbon based mammal can do, AI energy (electricity right now), will be orders of magnitude higher. Thus if AI is made to do computation equal to even a single human, it would devour electricity produced by the entire planet. That much electricity to feed Silicon AI brain will never become available. Humans are using AI weaponization even right now against other humans. But there is NO WAY AI can become sentient to adapt evil human character. That is because it does not even know that humans even exist, other than inputs from them and broadcasting their output. So worry about AI becoming a willful weapon by itself is a total NONSENSE.But evil humans can weaponize AI to hurt other . That is not being sentient or having a will. So understand Hinton correctly. His worry us about evil humans and not about a dead piece of silicon.

@@christopherjaya342 Ah, I see. You probably haven't read the citation then? Have you any idea of the Boltzmann machine that was cited? It seemed to me quite a model emerging from statistical physics. I can hardly imagine what it seemed to you. Anyway, "actual" isn't the proper word surely.
@christopherjaya3424 күн бұрын
@@agetss358 A model from statistical physics stop being a model of physical system in natural universe when it's applied to non-physical systems; The reason why statistical physics considered a physics discipline is because of the underlying physical systems it tries to model, not the other way around. The Nobel prize *for physics* should be awarded for achievement regarding the innovation of technology or model in physical realm. By the way, Boltzmann machine is not a model of a system in the natural universe. Hinton and Sejnowski were inspired by principles in statistical mechanics (e.g Ising spins model), but they weren't trying make the model of a physics phenomenon nor any physical system. Also, out of nowhere, but I don't regard Econophysics as a physical discipline either!

Artificial intelligence has a greater significance in bringing about tremendous changes to human history than physics, which involves the warping of space and time or the delay of time.
