Fun facts about kirby vs sephiroth: kirby is small, so crouching under sephiroths hitboxes really helps, especially shadow flare, running in and using shields to force misspaces from sephiroth so u can grab him, have sephiroths copy ability helps with ledge trapping, and kirbys down b goes thru octoslashes hitboxes

Squad Strike tournaments. I never gave it a thought because you can't play this mode online, but I actually think that'd be fantastic. Not only a good way to diversify the tournament matches but a great way to represent more and more characters.
@BurningNight3142 жыл бұрын
1000% agree with you on your points about making the tournament experience more enjoyable. Going into tournaments as a newcomer is so difficult when you're always seeded against the best players, it's such a massive barrier to entry. But even once you get past that point, tournaments take soooooo long to finish it's absurd and makes it hard to enjoy waiting several hours to only play a handful of games. As hard as a bracket format is for newcomers, it's unfortunately also the fastest, so I don't think there's really a perfect balance.

i LOVEEE the idea of squad strike for tourneys, me and my buddies always play squad strike when playing with one another, the tag team format switching in between 3 or 5 characters that you have to know how to play is amazing. Genuinely so much fun. I dont understand why it isnt in tourneys. I get it does not seem nearly as "competitive," but then you'd have to know what you're doing with more than 2-3 characters, and the possibility of all the matchups and stuff you'd have to keep in mind for a 5v5 would be so cool.

His rant about Smash getting shafted by Nintendo comes off as somewhat misguided honestly. Like while it's a shame that Smash isn't at EVO, we don't even know the full logistics of it and it seems illogical to act like it's just Nintendo hating competitive Smash considering that Nintendo and Panda have that circuit planned for the same year. It's very possible it could be because Sony owns EVO now, it could also very well be because EVO's former owner also fucked around with kids, which they might not want to affiliate with from a brand perspective. And honestly while it was super popular at EVO last time it was there, EVO was always kind of just okay when it came to competitive Smash a lot of the time. There's so many tournaments that go on for it and a lot of the other majors and supermajors are typically much more interesting.

I really liked your perspective on Smash Bros tourneys. I quite agree with the squadstrike idea. Maybe not replacing all tournaments, but as a separate category to start would be good. Also, imagine a randoms bracket or a bracket for purely newcomers or people with less experience. I think that could make it much more approachable for new players.
@dorsecode77622 жыл бұрын
Squad strike being default for 1v1 tournaments would be so much more enjoyable to watch. Honestly I'm kinda surprised TOs haven't been taking advantage of it, because it really does make the experience more 'tournament-like'. The ability to order your squad adds a level of meta gameplay that restricts busted characters to one stock, and provides a chance at counter-play when faced with a bad matchup. Not to mention that it encourages a wider skillset, and variety overall. In a way, I want less people to be focused on their 'main' and pick up several characters instead, kind of like how people have counter-pick characters. Also, it seems I'm in the minority when I say more stages should be legal, especially ones with walls and uneven platforms. They've been banned in the past because walls and uneven platforms can provide advantages to certain character matchups, but if you're playing squad strike, this advantage/disadvantage is more balanced, and can be played around since you choose your squad after the stage anyways. Imagine how hype it would be to see a wider variety of cool combos that wouldn't usually exist, by using a wall or a higher/lower than usual platform. Plus tech'ing and wall-jumps would become more valuable of an asset. These things are cool if you watch for entertainment. I'd like to see smash evolve, and focus more on being entertaining, over this mindset of 'play one character and get good at one stage style and make sure to whine when this other stage is bad for this handful of characters, because everyone only plays one character and that's not fair.' because the current way tournaments are played has very little variety as a whole, and that's really not what smash is about, nor is it that fun to watch unless you're watching the best of the best, and can appreciate technical gameplay. Not gonna expand on this much, but doubles should be more popular too. Good teamplay and combos are dope, far more entertaining than the current formula.

A few reasons why I believe Nintendo doesn’t like competitive smash: 1) they worry about it losing its zany perception as a party game brand 2) They worry about something you mentioned; kids not having fun and feeling disenfranchised 3) smash fans are never satisfied so the company feels disenfranchised towards them 4) Difficult to highly control like Nintendo likes to 5) unlike splatoon, it’s considered more of a 1v1 thing which to them takes away from the family experience. Plus like my last point, Splatoon gamers have seemingly bought into being highly controlled 6) Hbox has shit on Nintendo in high audience live formats so many times they hold a grudge hahaha And a few more but I’ll keep it concise so it’s easier for ppl to disagree with one or two instead of five lol

One of the biggest problems with Ultimate seems to be mixing characters with comeback mechanics, mixing very similar characters, and mixing very dynamic characters, all into one game. I think a Squad Strike tournament would be a great way to help alleviate "everyone" being here cuz there's just way too much (especially when you can't really practice or play properly online). Edit: Okay, thinking for a second, probably wouldn't fix all those issues. But squad strike is still a fun mode... that you can't play online... :')

I think smash tournaments would be more interesting if players are limited to using a character once per set. I feel like this forces players to really experiment and have a diverse roster, watching the same thing can get stale if you dont understand the complexity behind what you're watching. Most people aren't going to get to the depth of understanding pro player complexities. Which is why I feel like smash content creators who show off different characters or challenges seem to grow more online then strictly "competitive" creators. (This is just an assumption and could be wrong but when I look at different content creators numbers, what I've explained is what I personally see.) I'm not saying anyone is better than the other just saying the general public won't fully understand things like match ups, map selection, or spacing. People want to see what makes the game fun not what makes it hard to master. So I feel like forcing competitors to switch up characters in major tournaments might be appealing to a larger audience. I've now noticed how long this comment has gotten and how interested I am in the subject. I feel like at this point I gotta write a research paper or something on this. I do wonder what people think about locking out characters that are used in a single set for the player that's uses them.

Tournaments shouldn’t be just the regular rules tournament. They should be places to go and have fun playing smash at all skill levels and playstyles and whatnot. Have the tournament running, but have tournaments with more fun rulesets too; maybe not even tournaments, but just different matches with different rulesets and modes; like maybe have one setup be just super smashdowns, have one be crew battles, have people trying to take down amiibos, or teaming up to take out people with spirits. Basically, casual friendlies, but more organized and varied to have a bunch of different ways to play. It shouldn’t just be a “smash tournament”, it should be a smash event with a tournament as one of the things going on there. This is all from the perspective of someone who has never gone to a tournament, btw, so I have no idea how much of this is or isn’t already a thing.

The problem with Nintendo and competitive smash bros is that if Nintendo leans hard core into the competitive scene it really goes against their branding not only of smash but just in general. Nintendo is all about family fun and especially with smash and Mario kart their motto is basically “if you can pick up a controller you will have fun”. By leaning into competitive that completely goes against that montra seeing how much time you have to dedicate to smash to be reasonably good at it. Especially bc you have to remember that competitive smash is a very very small portion of the people who actually play smash. So that’s why they don’t really support it. That being said I don’t know why they don’t just leave it alone and let it be it’s own thing without their involvement, that part I will never get.
I mean I think Nintendo wants to focus on their circuit and hopefully they announce more news.
