The coin is a 1/48 Taler from the state of Münster under the rule of bishop Clemens August von Bayern. Since nowadays Germany was devided into many very small states back then almost every one of them minted their own coins. They were accepted all over Europe though, valued at their silver content. Since the coin says "Landmünze" the silver content is worth slightly less than a actual 1/48 of a Reichstaler.

The black and white colors on the pipe fragment is from the firing process. That IS a dandy example though, the embossed ones are few and far between. The "blow holes are caused during the casting process when either air or some type of contamination such as a piece of slag is present in the molten metal, or possibly some kind of contamination inside the mold itself.

" blow hole or vent hole buttons are a lot older than first thought . they started out as two pieces ( the back with the holes and the front smooth convex side ) the two halves are hot soldered or brazed together and the holes do let out the hot gases then the shank is brazed on. these button are found at sites dated from mid 1600's to mid 1700's as a lot are found at French and Indian war sites. Hello there 👋🏻 Just came new to this Channel an i really like it 👍🏻 That's actually 48/1 Reichs Thaler. Which means, 48 of these coins would be 1 Reichs Thaler. It's like 4 Quarters to make One Dollar. Smallest unit has been 360/1 Reichsthaler, which was called 1 Reichspfennig. Awesome finds 👏🏻🍀 Best Regards, from the East Frisian Coast 🙋🏻‍♂️

The finding of those regimental buttons brings up an interesting question. The 26th was at Fort Ticonderoga when the fort was captured by Ethan Allen. The 60th (Royal Americans) was formed for service in the French and Indian War. They did serve in the Revolutionary War, but in Florida and Georgia. Also, if you are in the Bennington area, that German coin could have come from a Hessian soldier who fought in the battle of Bennington.
@GMMD

For sure! After finding these items we did a bit more research and it's likely they're all French & Indian war- which explains both regiments and a Hessian coin in this particular spot!

@roxannemccaffrey8081 Жыл бұрын
During the 1777 Saratoga Campaign, there were several crucial limited engagements that played a role in slowing down General John Burgoyne’s 8,000-man invasion force as it made its way south from Canada to rendezvous with other British forces near Albany, New York. One of those places was Hubbardton located in present day Vermont. The British attacked the American rear guard, which had abandoned Fort Ticonderoga without firing a shot after the British placed cannons on the hills overlooking the fort. With Fort Ticonderoga made untenable, General Arthur St. Clair ordered the fort evacuated on July 5, 1777. With intelligence in hand that the Americans had left their defensive position at Fort Ticonderoga and were headed south, the British opted to take advantage of the situation. Burgoyne’s adjutant, General Simon Frasier, pursued the Americans, catching up with them on July 7 at Hubbardton. Elements of Saint Clair’s rear guard had encamped at Hubbardton and were taken by surprise by the British, reinforced by a detachment of Brunswick Grenadiers and Jägers led by General Friedrich Adolf Riedesel. The Americans put up stiff resistance, and almost succeeded in turning the British flank, only to have the Brunswick Grenadiers arrive on the field, singing Hymns as they crashed into the American flank, staving off a British defeat. Joining in the fight for the Americans was Colonel Seth Warner, a grizzled Veteran of the French and Indian War and his band of Green Mountain Boys. These were the Americans who provided the heavy fighting on the American side. While many Americans were taken prisoner and marched back to Fort Ticonderoga for confinement, the bulk of Saint Clair’s army was able to escape further south along the Hudson. The result was a British tactical victory, but an American strategic victory.

That Reichsthaler coin is amazing! Fun fact-the name originated with the silver mines at Joachimsthal, and the coins minted from the silver dug there were called thalers. The Reichsthaler ended up being minted for over three hundred years! Yours falls at almost exactly the midpoint of that period of time. The word “dollar” was derived from the thaler.

With all the British troop clues you found, I wonder if the Thaller was dropped by a Prussian soldier. You might want to check the diameter of the musket balls and see if they differ from what the British Brown Bess used. The Prussians used a Potzdam musket and depending on the year produced fired a .71 to .78 caliber ball.

The Royal Americans 60 th Regiment of foot British I found one in central Alabama at an upper creek site. Cool thing I can almost date its arrival Major Farmer British Commander arrived Mobile Al end of French Indian war. Almost immediately confronted by native Americans who came for their annual tribute payment from the French. He had to make do and ordered coats knives whatever was available to pay over to the locals. 60th served from Canada to Louisianna for decades.

Great finds. Enjoy your channel. Your "blow hole" button as many call them, are more accurately called "hollow cast" buttons. First produced in the late 1600s they continued use up untill the 1770s. Some are found on early rev war sites but they were somewhat out of use by the mid Rev period. They were very common in the 1750s-1760s. I found them on some Braddock sites (1755) many years ago and at a trading post that dated from 1761-1763. The 60th button is not from the F & I War. Although the regiment was formed at that time, regimental buttons (British or otherwise as such) were not marked with regimental numbers until the late 1760- through the Rev. and later. The 60th was arround during the revolution & the 60th button found would date from about 1768- to ythe very early 1770s.... Keep up the great videos....

Are there any records that show there were "Hessian" troops in the British Army, there? The vent back domed button is typical of 18th century German uniforms used by British Hessian troops in the Americas and found in sites they are associated with. It might also explain your German silver coin, carried by a Hessian.

The German coin was likely from one of Lt. Col. Baum's or Von Breymann's men prior to, or following the Battle of Bennington. Baum and Breymann's Hessian troops served the English ( Burgoyne) during the Rev. war (mercenaries) Got their butts kicked by Stark and Warner and some of the Green Mountain Boys at Bennington. They returned to the NY area around Schuylerville and fought at Saratoga in October '77. My 6th G Grand father was General Benjamin Lincoln who was promoted over Stark. First German coin I have seen from this era. Really cool find. A friend of mine owns the property that Baums men were camped on near the Hudson in Schuylerville. He has found bunches of relics and artifacts from the camp site (both English and German) but never a German coin.

How many musket balls do you have to pick up before you get one that’s passed through a body? Not to be morbid but to be serious. I know that most people consider them to be dropped relics, eventually you have picked up one that’s responsible for ending a life. I live in Washingtons Crossing, Pennsylvania. Where Washington physically crossed the Delaware River into Trenton. I’ve recovered over 200 rounds- most have struck an object. The idea that my collection contains these changes the reverence.
