I bought an RX 7800 XT, despite my friends' protests since he knows I dip into VR gaming frequently with my Quest 3. Guess what? It works PERFECTLY via Virtual Desktop with SkyrimVR. It's been a goddamn smooth experience. AMD is still the "discount storebrand option", the only thing it can compete with is price. Offering 10% better value in rasterized performance doesn't mean much when your performance goes to shit when you enable RT effects, and the features you offer are generally only worse versions of NVIDIA features. Then there's the elephant in the room that to many computers aren't _only_ glorified gaming consoles, we do all sort of work on our puters. That's where AMD starts becoming a nonstarter, especially if it includes anything built around CUDA, or anything AI. AMD needs to do better than be perpetually catching up.

Niche cases like VR and maybe more common RayTracing (🤢) are still way off. AMD should be a viable option these days, but few are using their gpus. AMD doesn't make and sell graphics cards, they sell the GPU silicon to board makers. They could be giving up a ton of revenue on the price they are selling their chips just to remain competitive with nvidia. While a consumer is paying $500 for a 7800XT and $600 for a 4070 Super, a 20% difference, nvidia's revenues on the chips could be 100%-200% higher than AMD's, and even more ludicrous with the 4090.

AMD graphics cards still have a stigma against them due to past poor performance from prior generations. Seven years ago AMD's 500 series cards massively underperformed compared to Nvidia's 1000 series, so the stigma is somewhat justified. That said my 7900 XT is killing it in games where my 3070 Ti could barely keep up. Unless you are are spending $800+ and are really into one of the few heavily raytraced titles on the market, there is no reason to be going NVIDIA right now other than brand loyalty.

Huh, weird title... my GPUs over the years.Radeon 5570, Radeon R9 280X, Nvidia 1070ti. My current rigs: 5700G/RX 6700X, 3800X/6950X, 5900X/6950X. Over the years, got a Cyrix DX4 1000Mhz, Athlon 3 core cpu, intel i7 860, intel i5 6600K. Before the Radeon 5570, I had an Nvidia 680 or 860 something, RMA'd twice and still died before warranty. That thing was from BFG, guess that company went under. Seems I buy more AMD products done others.

Intel's biggest branding mistake was designating the Pentium line-up to the low-end before killing it off. They should've just stuck with 'Pentium' name for everything consumer. Like it was for over a decade from the 90's- mid 2000's.

Upscaling technology and frame generation are actually more important for mid-low tear hardware users. Mid-tier AMDs may have more raw power for their price but FSR lacks so much behind people buy nVidia anyway. And they know they need to fix that. Hope FSR 3.1 comes strong.

If AMD wants to tackle Nvidia on the gpu front they need to focus on APUs. Most people dont want to assemble a rig, a small prebuilt with a 7800xt and 7700 equivilent would sell gangbusters. Work with MS to get xbox OS on prebuilts with unlocked settings, dual boot winows or steam OS and take over the pre built market. Thats where the real money is. In dedicated gpus triple the raytracing cores so in benchmarks it matches nvidia, otherwise their dusted.

My past 3 builds were partial/full AMD. 3700X + 1070ti 5950X + RX6800 7950X + RX7900XTX Well, when the 4080S was released I jumped ship and traded in my xtx for it. It's a slight downgrade in vram and raster, but I was tired of the drivers crashing. Both with the 6800 and xtx. Both fresh windows installs. Only one crash so far on the 4080 and I didn't even use DDU. Not happy I had to support Nvidia but I needed to.

AMD could be crushing the xx60 series, and might want to focus there. Polaris was relatively successful and is still somewhat relevant today. The RX 580 competed directly with the GTX 1060. Both were great cards. RX 580 remains the most widely used AMD card on steam to this day. It's possible RX 8000 might just do this, since the rumors are there will be no highend cards this round. If they can produce a card that crushes the RTX 5060 and sell it for like $260-280, that'd be a winner.

Gaming graphics cards going down for AMD is to be expected. Back when you could get a mid range computer for $650, it was a better deal than getting a PS3 for $599. But today? The PS5 costs $499, and it is expected to last for 6 years. At $499, you can't even get a 4070 Super. Nor can you build a decent mid range computer. And with the advent of KZbin, Twitch, and other streaming/video services on the free PlayStation or XBox networks, the old benefits of gaming on a computer are gone. It is simply the better choice to get a console. As for productivity, you either don't need a graphics card at all (for the typical administrative stuff) or you really need CUDA cores.

i mean it does make sense that is not just an android system since there are a lot of thing that can run android, from translator pens to vr headsets, with a few calculators, old phones, and leapfrogs in betwen, the fact that runs something does not make it entirely a certain os device, not trying to defend it, but we do need to remind ourselves that lil bit.

Yeah it’s annoying how AMD is slept on. The RX 7000 series and Ryzen 7000 series are far more power efficient and even better for the value than Nvida’s 40 series gpu and Intel combos. I run all games at 1440p and get over 150fps in most scenarios and when I boot up Cyberpunk for the first time it defaults to RT Ultra. (GPU and CPU combo is Ryzen 7 7800x3D and RX 7800xt.) Do not sleep on AMD

It’s really surprising how under-acknowledged AMD is despite their obvious lead in price to performance. I was in a conversation yesterday about graphics cards and was surprised by how dominant the conversation was about the 4070 to 4090 without a single mention of AMD. Might just be my circles who generally grew up on GTX 700/900 (me included) but shoving AMD in their face won’t do any good. I don’t know if their brand identity can realistically compete with NVIDIA nostalgia anytime soon.
