Most Americans will never accept trains as a first choice of travel. First of all America is too big to try and go anywhere by train, and once you get there, then what? Second, unlike in Japan and most of Europe, America is much too diverse to have set good manners and expected public decorum, so we never know quite what to expect. The trains and subways are also often not clean and when you add unwashed people, sorry, but I can at least keep myself and my car clean. Also the street and subway/train crime in the USA is high. So thanks, but no thanks; I'll keep my car. My son, who has been to Japan, loves how polite the people are there. He says even the most crowded cities and trains doin't feel crowded because people are very considerate of each other. Can't even imagine that being the case here, especially in one of our crowded cities.

I was raised as a train traveler. Living on Long Island, train travel is just more convenient than the Long Island "Express" way...which can be bumper to bumper. However, we need security on both of them- trains and subways.
