22:00 The map is easily 76’s strongest asset, which I believe was designed by the FO4 “A-Team” before being passed along to their B-team. Moving through that environment has always been my favorite part of the experience. It even convinced me to spend a week traveling West Virginia! It is, despite its unfortunate poverty, a beautiful and unique place and I understand perfectly why they chose it as their setting.

i have no hate for Fallout76, but to levy a general criticism against it, i didn't have a problem with them trying some DIFFERENT with fallout, god bless, but it just felt like a pretty cynical spin-off, based on trends at the time (Destiny, DayZ, Rust, etc), monetized very aggressively. felt like the most "profitable" version of a multiplayer fallout they could make, the only thing missing would be a gacha mechanic. there's quality and passion there, no doubt, but i can't escape this feeling of a GaaS theme-park that's looking to drain my every penny.

The other day I saw an old forum post complaining about Bethesda buying the Fallout franchise. Why? Because Bethesda was the studio that ruined the The Elder Scrolls franchise by releasing Morrowind. We've been doing forever haven't we?

True Story, I once saw left field with like 2 hours notice and basically no knowledge of left field it was a great night and also very weird
@dizzt195 ай бұрын
I don't see how making Fallout 76 could be considered weird. People tried making a multiplayer mod for Oblivion, to me multiplayer was the obvious, mainstream evolution for Fallout. If they let other studios make Fallout spin-offs of various genres (proper shelter overseer, RTS, card game... etc.), that'd be bold, but making Fallout multiplayer? And the biggest Fallout 76 launch problem? It true Bethesda fashion, bugs. I'm not sure I'd call no NPCs evolution, just a flaw.
@EricShoe5 ай бұрын
There’s a lot of potential for interesting Fallout spinoffs like the ones you mentioned. The pivot to multiplayer was purely driven by money. GaaS was in vogue.

I'm glad to see u acknowledge the doc. While it was a good documentary overall, it painted a picture of Bethesda that wasn't Zenimax trying to sell Bethesda off. That's why they made them try this type of game. Trying to inflate the value of the company because live service games were all the rage. Now that we know better, the documentary is able to be viewed in a different context. I do not buy into the idea that Bethesda tried something radically different. We've seen so many companies make a left turn and try things they aren't good at. Look at Rocksteady for instance. Let's not get it twisted. This game is still not good. And just because it's "popular" now doesn't mean it's a good game. It's what Fallout players play because the last mainline entry didn't live up to the series' name, and this is all they have left if they don't want to play the mainline games for the 100th time over. It's just a go- between folks. Not the end all be all. No matter what rose tinted glasses u look at it thru.

Taking a swing at new things is awesome. "Sold it differently in marketing" or they lied about the product with full price launched. 16 times the detail, buggy game, MTX, In-game storage selling, Fallout first? Most people don't get to know devs closely like you guys so can you really blame us for trashing on Fallout76? It's not really at the dev I hope for most people at least but it's at the ones who try to sell this lie. There wouldn't be that much hate if they gave it to us straight in their marketing also.

The "On Initial Reactions" portion of this video hits a lot of good points. Alot of times i believe parts of the gaming community to be way overboard on being critical and sometimes it just feels like they would rather shit on something then talk about stuff they love. Fallout 76 did have its issues at launch but to me with a game of this scope and being massively online that is to be expected. Id rather developers take a swing at something new every now and again and i dont expect it to be perfect right out of the gate, let them perfect it to where it is the game they set it out to be. (IE. Fallout 76, Cyberpunk, etx)
@EricShoe5 ай бұрын
Both Cyberpunk and 76 were an issue of false promises that created hype and expectation. The games came out largely broken (particularly on consoles). If 76 was free to play, that would have alleviated some of the anger, but not all. Didn’t help that people were starting to paint Todd Howard as a snake oil salesman and many had lost faith with Bethesda after Fallout 4. And that point, many people wanted them to fail.
@Vub.5 ай бұрын
@Eeesleep I guess that stuff just doesn't bother me as much. If a game has issues upon release I just sit on it for a bit until they fix it and play it later. Which is what I did with both cyberpunk and fallout 76. I would rather do that than run to Twitter and grab torches and pitchforks posting memes of todd howard and spouting hate. I know there are legit grievances to be had with some releases but I think the way people go about it most the time is just because they enjoy a good hate bandwagon and aren't really looking to give constructive criticism.
@EricShoe5 ай бұрын
@@Vub. That is the smart way to enjoy games, especially from big publishers who have a tendency to rush out games. Wait for the issues to be patched. It’s totally reasonable to be angry if a game you paid for ends up being half-baked or not as promised though. A lot of people who didn’t even buy the game jumped at the chance to shit on Bethesda. Social media causes polarization in opinion. That’s not to say that they didn’t do a lot of shady stuff involving 76’s launch.
@Vub.5 ай бұрын
@Eeesleep exactly but in reality the loudest voices are heard but it doesn't mean they are the majority. You just have to block out the negative noise and just enjoy what you enjoy. I feel for the developers when they work hard for years on something they have passion for then the launch doesn't go well and the people they made the game for are at their throats. We could all have more compassion.
@EricShoe5 ай бұрын
@@Vub. Absolutely! There is no developer on the planet who wants to put out a bad game. It always comes down to a mix of exploitative and unrealistic publishers, shoddy management, and literally running out of money.

I'm not sure I buy the characterisation of Fallout 76 being Bethesda trying something crazy and creative with the franchise, it's a heavily monetised GaaS product that followed some of the more predatory and anti-consumer trends in gaming at the time. It's direction doesn't feel like a creative choice but a business one. On a related note, I don't know the details on 76's development but I would question framing Bethesda's publishing arm's acquisitions of other studios as 'charitable' given that they have a repeated track record of screwing over subcontracted developers financially by reneging on agreements, and then in some cases using the resultant financial difficulties to acquire said companies. Go ask Arkane or Obsidian whether they would recommend doing business with Zenimax.

It's interesting that Danny says the hub is like 3x as big, because it definitely felt smaller to me, but there were gated off areas, so I guess I didn't unlock some of them lol. I beat the boss on my 2nd run and decided that's where I'd stop because I didn't want to spoil too much. After you beat the boss, you get some cutscene stuff and unlock the 2nd weapon, so it felt like a good place to end.
