@adamw1162 жыл бұрын
The music video got alot of airplay back in the day! Just revisited it for nostalgia purposes and despite the fact that it was on No Doubt's second big studio album it almost sounds like a song that the band would do today or at least in the early 2000s. Stefani was still young yet but she knew she was getting to a maternal age and the whole 90s tough riot girl thing ska thing was starting to seem a little old hat. You noticed after this album came stuff like Hella Good and the cover of It's My Life. The band never really returned to it's original 90s sound after Return of Saturn. Amazing listen to this song and then some of today:a female centric pop stars. it's no contest when it comes to that era's song style, originality, song writing, lyrics, etc. A Billie Eliesh or Taylor Swift can't hold a candle to Gwen back in the day. She was the closest thing alternative rock music had to Marilyn Monroe. Even her singing voice was fairly unique and made men fall for her. But she had just enough moxy and style that girls dug her alot too. I must admit though when she got older and did videos for songs like Cool the glamorous bombshell came out more then ever. I mean if she had more acting talent Gwen Stefani probably would have been on the same level of Lady Ga Ga back in the late 90s or early 2000s as far as getting roles.

I always thought this song was about the inevitability of regret in one's life. No matter which path you choose to take, you will always wonder what it would've been like if you zigged when you zagged. But, I think there's a certain comfort in being aware of that. It's ok to ponder what could've been just so long as you don't make your life about mistakes you've made or missed opportunities. Live in the moment and try your best to enjoy what's granted you. Also keep in mind: Gwen ended up with 3 children! So, you never know where your life will lead. It ain't over 'til it's over...

Grew up listening to Return of Saturn as a child on my Sony boombox and always remember watching this video at my grandmother's house every Friday night. In tears watching this now during my Return of Saturn years. Yeah, we are still technically young and probably sound super dramatic, but I feel so much for all of you also going through your Return of Saturn years...especially during lockdown. Such a powerful album to revisit now.

@kisskissmollyslipss3 жыл бұрын
@@teresacereza Return of Saturn is when one goes through ages 28-30. The planet Saturn supposedly makes a full turn every 28-30 years. Those specific ages/years are usually a very tumultuous time for people where they face many growing pains, tests, and challenges. Gwen Stefani has said in interviews that she wrote this album during her Saturn Return, hence why she called it "The Return of Saturn".

I remember listening to this when it came out 15 years ago and crying at the line "I always thought I'd be a Mom." Now I have a 9 year old son and an amazing husband. But when I listen to that I still cry thinking about the sadness, and thinking about how if I only could have known then I would be giving birth 6 years later and how AMAZING life as a Mom would be for me.....SOON. At the time the song came out I was just graduating from high school. But loads of my friends were already settling down and having kids. I wanted that too. But I'm glad God gave me those years to go through two good relationships, but really hard break-ups. They simply weren't right for me even though I didn't see it at the time. You never know until the RIGHT person shows up that everything else in life was just leading up to them. And you feel grateful for every heart break. Because if it had went any different you wouldn't have the life you have today. Not perfect, but perfect for me.

The part where she held the baby and Tony was the last to show up and ask for the baby back. So symbolic and it must've been hard for her to shoot this video with him knowing it would never happen for them. I'm truly convinced in another lifetime these two will find a way back to each other.

"All I wanted was a simple kind of life, and all I needed was a simple man so I could be a wife." I was just thinking about this line in the shower today and how much longing is generally in this song. I really relate, she's badass girl making her dreams come true but at the end of the day she just really wants the simple things. It's all she's ever wanted. And it didn't work out, now, so many years later. And that really breaks my heart.
@xmasx9 жыл бұрын
Totally, I can relate too!! Sometimes we stress ourselfs with growing up and be better persons than yesterday, bla bla bla... Yet you are very successful, you have great things, but on the inside you will be happier and more relaxed with a simple life... ironic! Well the best advice always is to do what your heart truly wants.

@KeeKo4328 жыл бұрын
Well, this song is about her relationship with Tony. They were very young and a lot has happened since then. She fell in love with Gavin and had a family. There's a lesson to be learned from her relationship with Gavin. She knew in her heart that he was never going to be the kind of man she needed. But she's with Blake now. She's a mom - she has the family she wanted! She and Blake seem very happy and he seems like a down to earth man who appreciates a good woman. No need to be sad now!

The visual symbolism of a birth control pack around the 2:11 minute mark is incredible. It's the visual wheel that lights up in the back. Look closely and it has days of the week on it. The lyrics ties in with her wanting to be a mom, even if it's a "mistake" pregnancy. She is then handed a liquid to drink (in reference to swallowing the birth control).
