it *can* happen depending on the dryer and how the seals are a sock might worm it's way into the lint duct or such. The frequency of the occurence may be overblown but it's not entirely just a belief. Important thing to note though, most people here in Japan don't really use dryers, we hang dry. Dryers obviously still exist, but it's a very low chance Subaru uses one herself.

I actually hold on to my lonely, single socks. I usually buy socks in bulk so if I lose one, I've got a spare but once I lose another one, it's a pair again! But admittedly, I'm pretty sure I've got some loner socks that I've been holding on to for a while now. Lol. Obviously you can't do this with unique, matching pairs of socks but I hardly have any of those and they see infrequent use to begin with.
