If there’s anything Noel wants. He glamorizes life far beyond his own that catching a life-threatening sickness is more interesting than the life he has led so far. Notice that he wants a life that is at least full of suffering and debaucherous bliss. Whereas he feels the life in high school was so undefined and bland. He’d take anything over going back.
@plaguedoctor28826 ай бұрын
@@Polomance862 Its so tragic too because you know a Monique would have killed to be a Noel, and teen angst aside, I feel for Noel desperation it makes me remember Don Quixote going mad over outdated ideals and grand adventures that only exist in his tales (I do know the Quixote meaning is that life is absolutely as engaging as the tales if not more btw, I just dont have other comparison)

guys this may be stupid but i think the importance of a certain member's part in the song corresponds to how much noel likes them, like: ocean: he absolutely hates ocean and therefore doesnt want her in the song. but because of karnak she HAS to be in it so she just stands in the same pose in the bg in the dark for like 5 minutes constance: he likes constance (i mean who couldnt she's the nicest girl in town) but she doesnt directly interact with him (like touching him and talking to him) and instead is just a background dancer/singer which shows that even though she's nice and all, he doesnt have like a connection to her like he does the others. like think about it, just because she's the nicest girl in town doesnt mean that he has to be close with her. she's nice and he knows that, but they dont really have a friendship like that jane: same as constance, he likes her but he doesnt have a special bond with her or smth like that ricky: ricky has a direct interaction with him (the priest) PLUS he's the one playing the accordion so that's another important part. this shows that he likes ricky a lot mischa: now he REALLY likes mischa as evidenced by the fact that mischa is the one that interacts with him most in the song (the touching, the kissing, the 'i think i am in love with you') and has the most important role in the song next to noel himself i may be thinking too much into this but yeah

This dance routine draws huge inspiration from Liza Minnelli's performance of "Mein Herr" in the movie "Cabaret" - the movie is about the raunchy underground life of Berlin in the late 1920s early 1930s during the rise of the Nazi party, before queer life in Germany was brutally extinguished. Liza Minnelli is just fantastic in everything, her performance of Mein Herr is worth looking up.

In my life, I was Noel Gruber who worked at Taco Bell in Uranium City, Saskatchewan But, in my dreams, I played a different role I was Monique Gibeau in post-war France A hooker with a heart of black charcoal I write poems to burn by firelight Drink champagne and guzzle gin Good girls call me "the town bicycle" Don't knock it 'til you've tried my life of sin Oh, Claude, my pimp, knows never mess with me Last prick did that faded quick to black I have no idea where to find him, officers But if you do, please mention that I'd like to have returned The pretty knife That I stuck ten times in his back For I sing songs until the break of dawn I embrace a new man every night My life's one never-ending carnival A world of boozy-floozy flashing light I want to be that fucked-up girl He said, "I think I am in love with you" I've heard that lie a million times before Oh, tonight I give in to the fantasy Take love when you can, when you're a whore For I sing songs until the break of dawn I embrace a new man every night My life's one never-ending carnival A world of boozy-floozy flashing light I want to be that fucked-up girl So now I sell my love for opium In some rat-infested Chinese dive At night I burn myself with cigarettes Just to somehow prove I'm still alive Eight months later, I catch typhoid flu Kicked out, I see the ugly light of day Dying in an alley, a priest kneels down to me "My child, do you have any final words to the Lord you'd like to say?" "Oui. Tell him that, like him, I choose to burn out rather than fade away" For I sing songs until the break of dawn I embrace a new man every night My life's one never-ending carnival A world of boozy-floozy flashing light For I sing songs until the break of dawn I embrace a new man every night My life's one never ending carnival A world of boozy-floozy flashing light I want to be that fucked-up girl I wanna be that fucked-up (girl) Broken heart, a flask of gin Tattooed with a safety pin Teeth all stained with nicotine Running nylons, shattered dreams Super crusty, holy terror Wild eyes and black mascara Broken heart, a flask of gin Tattooed with a safety pin Teeth all stained with nicotine Running nylons, shattered dreams Super crusty, holy terror Wild eyes and black mascara If I could have just one dream (ahh) (If he could have just one dream) I'd be that fucked-up girl! Hey!

something i've never really saw someone talking about, but noel's lament seems to be jewish. the music uses classical elements of jewish music, but even far more important, the dance in the background (4:41-5:00) is like no doubt jewish (especially the way ocean dances it), the going back and forth, the way they lean to the front with their hands behind their back, the leg crossing, the arm raising and falling ect. I don't I just thinks that gives the song even more character lol

Is 3:18 possibly a reference to les mis? I haven't watch ride the cyclone, I just noticed that it's the same vocal increment steps as I dreamed a dream when Fauntine sings 'turn your dreams to shame'. Plus the dying prostitute aspect helps. I'm probably not the first person to notice, just curious tho.

It's possible! The character of Noel really likes French films and stuff so I like to think it's the character himself making a reference
