A big stack of bellville washers is used in most CNC mill spindles to pull the tool holder into the taper. That keeps the tool locked even if air or power quits. They compress the stack with a big air or hydraulic cylinder to let the tool holder in. They have some compliance range so they lock in tool holders that differ a little in taper or stud length. You can get a lot of force in a small area with a bellville spring and just stack them up to get enough compression distance. They do things you can't do with a coil spring, what a novel idea.

bellville, not bellvue.. when you have a background that's white, you actually get the opposite result you are looking for. You want the black arm to be lighter, so add a gray or dark color background. That's why some use the green background of the sewing mat.. it's like a neutral density, and doesn't cause the lens to close down to reduce light. You want the lens to open up and allow more light in to see the detail in the black arm.

when i was in the marines, one of the machine guns i was trained on was the mark 19. in one of the trigger housings, there was a stack of belville washers. if you put them in incorrectly, the weapon could fire when you dont want it to. And with a machine gun that fires explosives basically, you dont want that.

“Fires explosives basically” is an understatement. It is literally a machine grenade launcher, shooting 40mm high explosives.
