Noggarth Road, Roughlee in the heart of Pendle Lancashire.
Noggarth Road is a long straight road which connects the village of Fence with the Pendleside village of Roughlee. Noggarth Road sits on top of a long ridge which provides superb view to the South and East over the towns of Colne, Nelson, Brierfield and Burnley. Rising to about 900 feet in altitude, Noggarth gradually reduces in height as it heads along Ridgaling and then down towards the water-meetings between Blacko and Higherford.
Standing up on the top of Noggarth means you can pick out the houses, factories, the old factories and churches and the new mosques of these milltowns. The views from here vary every day as the light and the weather change the landscape. However, the best views are to the North and West over towards Pendle Hill and the various hills and villages which surround it.
The Noggarth ridge provides great farming land - with grass crops and sheep and cattle farming and more modern farm enterprises. On the recreation front, Noggarth is a reasonable walk from Nelson; and offers excellent walking on good generally well-posted footpaths and bridleways. Mountain bikes are increasingly welcome; and I can heartily recommend the steep climbs around these hills as you get superb views with some long descents on roads which are generally quieter and bike friendly.
A particularly good place to spend a bit of time up Noggarth are the roadside bench near the entrance to Laund House Farm. An old bench (called a ""Form"" in these parts) is set into a dry-stone wall and provides a panoramic view from Cowling, through Colne, Nelson, Brierfield and Burnley. Eagle-eyed day-trippers will be able to spot Cowling Pinnacle as well as the dominant mass of Boulsworth Hill on the skyline to the East and the Coal Clough windmills above Burnley to the South. On a good day you should also be able to pick out the Hambledon hills above Burnley and Blacko Tower.
A quarter of a mile along Noggarth Road to the north-east is the famous Noggarth End shop. It is often open for sweets, drinks and ice-creams and does a brisk weekend trade for the walkers, cyclists and motorists who are touring the Pendleside villages. It's well worth another stop to look around. The steep ""Land-Rover"" track called Sandy Hall Lane leads walkers and cyclists back towards Wheatley lane to Nelson. The best view is towards Pendle Hill. This awesome hill is not quite a mountain, but looks and feels very much like one. There are some great walks onto the hill for the fit and healthy. If you are less energetic, be sure to use some decent binoculars to see the stream of walkers who are headed up or down the path to or from the summit.
With many thanks
