1973 I was sitting o a couch in my High School library after getting high in Central Park. I drew the N.R.P.S. album cover on my jeans as I grooved to Panama Read on my headphones - life was good.

@@The_Goat_YT15 I stopped seeing them around 75', maybe 76', thought Englishtown was the exception as they were on the bill. It wasn't the same for me about this time.

I can't explain how great and endless these New Riders/Dead shows at the Fillmore East, I honestly remember leaving one of the late shows at 9 am in broad daylight still on the electric kool aid.

I saw NRPS with Jerry and Bob in Brooklyn. They did my 2 most favorite NR songs. Henry and Glendale train. This concert took place in 1970. It was very special. It took place at the 46th st Theater in Brooklyn. It started Thursday. And played 2 shows on each night thurs, fri, sat, and sun. I was standing right in front of Jerry. He passed me some fine bud. I then passed him some unreal coke. One would think it couldn’t get Any better. But right about 11:30 pm two long haired dudes bopped down the center aisle. It was my favorite artists. J&J. That’s right it was Jorma and Jack. Hot Tuna. “My favorite “ band . Then and now. In Fact I will be seeing them on Sat, April 29. Hard to believe but true. Peace and Love.

Always enjoyed Jerry Garcia’s style on the pedal steel, never duplicated. Jerry set the standard for pedal steel players hope to achieve. Rusty Young of Poco is an excellent example of one trained under the master Jerry Garcia. Thanks for posting.

Jerry DID NOT set the standard for most pedal steel guitarists. That standard was set decades before Jerry plucked his first pedal steel guitar string by the likes of Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Ben Keith (long before he was Neil Young's pedal steel guitarist), Ralph Mooney (long before he was Waylon Jenning's pedal steel guitarist), Buddy Charleton, and later, Lloyd Green and Jay Dee Maness. Although Rusty Young and Jerry Garcia both played pedal steel guitar in country rock bands, Jerry never mentored or trained any pedal steel guitarists. In fact when Jerry acquired his first pedal steel (I believe from Scotty's Music in St. Louis) in the late 1960's Rusty Young was already a very accomplished pedal steel guitarist - more accomplished than Jerry would ever be (if Jerry was still alive he would likely agree). Rusty grew up in Denver, Colorado. When Rusty was a teenager, Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys frequently played in clubs in Denver. Jimmy Day and Buddy Emmons were the pedal steel players with Ray Price in the late 50's and early 60's and it's not a stretch to say that Rusty had likely seen one or both of those maestros playing Ray's band. Also, Rusty's pedal steel used Jimmy Day's copedant (pedal configuration) - Jerry's guitar didn't use that copedant. Rusty's playing style is indicative of the style of both Emmons and Day. Particularly Jimmy Day when playing the C6th tuning. One other thing, I think Rusty might have taken lessons at Domland Music (near or in Denver) which was owned by Willy Domland. Willy built Domland and Edwards brand pedal steel guitars. I believe Rusty might have played a Domland before owning his first ZB pedal steel, and later, Sho~Bud and Carter pedal steel guitars. Regarding Jerry's pedal steel playing: From what I understand, in the late 1960's, Jerry and fellow California musician, and pal Pete Grant were driving from California, going east. On that trip, they listened to a lot of country music by Bakersfield and Nashville artists and became enthralled by the pedal steel guitars which were a BIG part of the sound of that music. Pete bought a ZB guitar (I believe) at Scotty's Music in St. Louis and later sold it to Jerry (just a few months before Jerry started recording with it). Jerry's style of playing was not derivative of any other steel player with the exception of a slight nod to Ralph Mooney's Bakersfield style of play.

Saw J G play with them in 72 or3 before the dead came on. It was the last time I heard J G on pedal steel until the 80s was it the Dylan and the dead shows? The years and shows are a blurry mess. Ah the wheel, sure wish he’d have broken out that instrument more often. Oh well those were the days!

It was Jerry Garcia on pedal steel. Buddy Cage didn’t arrive on the scene yet until Buddy was in the studio on the Powerglide LP. Definitely, always enjoyed Jerry Garcia pedal steel sound which has never been duplicated. Buddy Cage also had an addictive pedal steel guitar sound that was never duplicated. Both Jerry and Buddy were class acts that really shined on the New Riders tunes. 👍

Buddy Cage was a prodigy of pedal steel and became very good in his teens. Contrary to what you say, and although he developed a somewhat individual style, he, somewhat, duplicated Buddy Charleton's style with Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours band. Check out this comparison: First, the Ernest Tubb original with Buddy Charleton playing the steel; then the cover by Canadian, Shorty Masters with a very young Buddy Cage playing steel (you might need to copy and paste to a new browser window): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYLKl4J_areCidU kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHvVmXmaib9jY9U
