Sometimes the brilliant Eddie Muller film intros need to be repeated ad infinitum so that newcomers to Noir are continually receiving "new" information. This movie was just as scary as can be. I cannot even imagine young people of today being able to digest just how sinister the indomitable Claude Rains is with, as Mr. Muller states here, a simple screenshot of him. He is untouchable in his screen personae. Robert Mitchum plays the chump Extordinaire. Very few Noire actors can reach his height of Clueless indulgence when it comes to the ladies. Or, as he stated in another of his great films, "she" was leading him down the fatal path, but, "man, I didn't care." Thanks, Noir Alley (not affiliated...) for another great Eddie Muller video.

Thanks for posting! I can't really bear Mitchum, however. He was a pre- Elvis in his slow, grinning, somewhat lurid sexuality. They both just seemed dumb to me, while well aware of their appeal to some women. But what would they talk about when they finished smoldering at you? RM was perfectly cast as the evil man of the cloth in " Night of the Hunter". He hunted everything and everybody. Hope Eddie M. considers that a film noir.Think I'll pass, though, even though probably a good film.(But RM as a medical doctor? when he always gave the impression of being a proud high school dropout. 😊

Hah-hah! I get, I've seen what you're seeing. It took me a long while to appreciate Mitchum's relaxed technique and, believe it or not, his vulnerability. That's just my take, of course. One thing about Mitchum I liked: he never took himself seriously or put himself above his fans, even though his fans, of course, did.

@@NoirFan77 Not always so laid-back. RM could be very difficult. And never or rarely prepared. As time went on, he exerted less & less, finally seeming merely bored. And thus boring to us.

This one and Pushover are hard movies to find. The only copies I've ever been able to find of these films is in DVD collection packs, which aren't always given that much subtitle support and/or extra features. It would be nice to see them get some modern Blu Ray releases. Such good movies and I'm happy to see them being showcased. Lastly, he covered this film a few years ago with Mitchumʼs son Chris. Some films get neglected altogether, but he covers this one again. The previous coverage was definitive and having the man's son on was such a nice addition. Maybe he does cover some movies twice sometimes, I'm not sure. Still, it is odd.

@@maartenlemmens8628I appreciate your letting me know that. However, those boxed sets are Region B discs. I live in North America, and those discs will not work with my drives.
