Once I transitioned to Hakkas years ago in my 08 Civic I have never gone back. Michelin X-ice and Blizzaks were all fine but wore out too quickly. Hakka R2, R3s on a Fit, Toyita Van and 3 Subarus currentky, have all worn in, improved on year two and actually made the vehicles ride noise quieter over all-weathers or summers. Just impressive, quiet, reliable and seasonally functional tires. Thanks for a great review. Again😬

@@khalidsultan2716 the new R5 has a 25% more contact area and is designed for on again off again ontario type winters. Smooth and reliable if the r3 is any indicatir. Putting R5s on my Fit, but out of dealer concenience putting X-ice Snow SUVs on a Forester. Both are great tires

Yes! I had the same exact experience with the x-Ice and Blizzaks! Own some Toyo Observe Ice studded now, but they lack good wet snow handling versus the others. Great otherwise. Hakkas are my next year buy for sure! I’ve got at least another season with these Observe Ice… but my wife’s MDX might get the first crack at Nokian tires this winter. We’ll see. 👍🏾

Since I found them around 2005, I've run Hakkapeliitta 7s, and now Hakka 9s on my vehicles. I prefer the factory studded models, which significantly improve over any unstudded tire, although they add a growl to tire noise when on a hard surface like asphalt. I've run them on a 2003 Nissan Frontier 2wd, two Subaru Baja's (2005 and 2006) and a 2018 Silverado 4wd. They are by far the most inspiring tires I've driven on in bad conditions. They last well, too. My driving is almost anywhere in Alberta, Saskatchewan, BC, and the Northwest Territories, on all sorts of roads. To outfit my Baja and my Silverado with Hakka 9s cost me about a thousand dollars each, installed. I love these tires, and guide everyone I can towards them. Studded Hakka's rule the road!

@@khalidsultan2716 I think the Hakka's are the best I've had. I've bought a Subaru WRX last fall and run Hakka 10's (I think - maybe 9's) on it. My wife drives it, and I drive the Baja. The difference between studded and unstudded is remarkable. With the Baja (168 hp, so low power) I can launch off the line in almost any conditions with minimal tire spin. Braking in both straight line and curve is very good, and cornering is impressive. The only place I've found where they, and probably every tire out there, are challenged is on glare ice at 0 C, for the film of water on the ice make the worst possible traction. These tires are amazing but will not make up for overdriving the conditions.

@@ratfink8401 thanks . In my area . Studs are forbidden. I have done some research Bridgestone is good for ice but worn out. X-ice good in snow but not ice not cornering . I'm not sure why people are not fan / happy with Continental . So. I'm still confused 🤔🤔🤔. So. Is Hakka without studs better than contentinal. Bridgestone and x-ice

@@khalidsultan2716 I don't know how the Hakka non-studded are. I've heard that they are very good. Studs just make them much better. I'm in Canada - studded tires are legal in Sask, Alta, Yukon, NWT year round, and possibly in other provinces as well. Some other provinces they are only legal in the winter months. There is no place in Canada that I know of where studs are illegal in winter.

grew up learning to drive on icy parking lots and lakes. Swerving like that will truly give you the best feel for a winter tire at the edge. How the tire responds after loosing grip and beginning to over or understeer is another fun way to see the tires ability

@@khalidsultan2716 tbh for ice, anything studded but the issue is once you go studded it's not very practical for anything else IMO. I have never run a studded tire before and between my Michelin x ice 3's and my Nokia r2's I'd take the nokians every day of the week. When I first bought them I started on the r1 series and it was about $400 CAD a tire, the price has leveled out to a reasonable $200-$250 a tire now making it much more feasible. The r2 was a massive improvement over the r1 because of the cryo crystal tech i believe its called for nokian, basically walnut shells beuilt into the tire for added traction on ice. I believe they would be on the r4 series now so significant improvements all the way around and price drops for sure as it's become a more mainstream tire over the years. I also do alot of high speed driving down snow covered logging roads so my use case is far from the average user. If you run an SUV then Nokia has an SUV tire lineup as well, the extra weight of the vehicle really helps these tires shine on ice.

@HeartBreakKyle no it would still be overkill, a Durango is an SUV at the end of the day it's not a performance vehicle in any way shape or form. I'd be more worried about flipping if the tires decide to catch mid slide because of the weight being so high centered on SUV'S in general. Tbh save yourself some cash and go with any tire what so ever for an SUV. You weigh so much and are top heavy so id be worried about flipping more then anything. My car is 2700lbs fully fueled with me in it and has very stiff suspension, it's nothing in comparison to 4-5000 even 7000lbs flying around a corner with a high center of gravity and soft suspension ( all suv and trucks have softer suspension settings then a car for obvious reasons ) and it's the rolling i would be concerned about. These tires are incredible for high performance vehicles ( AKA cars ) in the winter time, it's an absolutely terrible option for anything other then cars AND you pay a premium since 1 franchise bought the rights to those tires ( AKA you can only buy them at one store ) which means they jack up the price as well. Unless they lost the rights and more then 1 franchise carries it but even then not worth it for you're situation brother

I'm asking about the the Durango 392 SRT and SRT Hellcat durangos which infact are performance vehicals.. bets thing about them its a all year round performance vehical with the AWD so it's aggressive and stiff steering and suspension.. so would these be good and not overkill?

north central alberta here: must drive 230km for groceries, each way, and when the sun sets by 7:30pm in october and there are deer everywhere causing at least one ABS or near-ABS lockup to avoid deer taking out radiator or worse, even driving 95kph everywhere i'm pushing the margins of safety, when the same highways are frozen and covered in black ice and half covered in snow the % of being taken out by a deer go way up, get great tires to save your life,

Hi Justin: As always, great review. I just bought a set of four R3's for our VW Tiguan. Based on your review, we should be a lot safer driving to Whistler (mandatory to have snows) from Vancouver and to our local mountains at the upper elevations. I grew up in Northern Ontario and this particular video and background scenery brought back fond memories of winter driving in my earlier years. I've been on the Nokia's for many many years started with them in my saabs. There is no other. Everyone that has ever ridden with me in the winter. Ice storms skiing going over mountain passes they all are on Nokia's

In Russia, the Ikon 245/50/r20s are $200/each vs $375/each for Blizzak DM-V3s. With this review, I would say that the Blizzak's aren't worth the nearly 2x premium! Thanks for the great review!

Great review. You could really see the R's perform better when you were trying to lose traction. I have a EVO X and this is my first winter here in Winnipeg using the Hakka's. I swapped them after 7 winters of driving on Continental ContiWinterContact TS 810 winter tire. I do miss the much stiffer sidewall on the Continental's but this is a performance winter tire. The Hakka's are a snow and ice tire. I still love the performance of these tires.

To people deciding whah tires to get, these tires have been pretty good to me so far, coming from Pirelli Sottozero 210 Series 2, the tires are a lot softer as compared to the performance winter tire. They’re better if you live on completely snow covered roads then dry roads in Toronto. They’re good but they don’t necessarily fit where I drive, but i would recommend them

Yep. Hakkapeliitta winter tires are the best of the best. Maybe not for high speed winter driving, but no one should really be doing that on public roads anyway. My personal favourite is the Yokohama BluEarth Winter V905. But I’ve had Hakkapeliittas on 3 cars and loved them in icy prairies and snowy mountains. Thanks for the great and honest review! 👍

@David Moore Not too fast, it is winter after all! But I find Nokian winter tires get squirrely above 60 mph/ 100 km/h and I often hit speeds above 80 mph/ 130 km/h when passing on roads that are cold but clear and dry. So if you stick to the limits and you don’t exceed them to pass, Nokian winter tires are great.

@@khalidsultan2716 Studded Nokians Hakka 9 and the new 10 are excellent but not for everybody. Studs are hard on concrete surfaces. If studded tires are forbidden in your area, Bridgestone makes great tires. And so are the Nokian R3/R5 studless series tires. Those new Michelins Xice Snow are good too.. miles ahead of those Xice3..

I've been running a set of Nokian WR G3 and 4's all weather on my 2013 Elantra. Moving to an AWD K5 and a dedicated set of winter tires. Was considering Pirelli P Zero because the car comes with a set of Pirelli. Think I'm sticking to what I know and looking forward to a set of Hakka 3s.

Great review. Wish I got Hakkas, I opted for Toyo studded for my TSX, and they’re very good, but horribly loud. They also slip a bit in wet conditions so I don’t love them as much as I would Hope. My next buy for my wife’s MDX will be Hakkas for sure. We’re in Alberta.

Hakka is a great Alberta tire. Opt for the studless, the tacky compound is superb on ice and makes the studs a little redundant. My ONLY complaint is that the contis and toyos feel better under load in dry conditions. Hakka is a very soft compound, but if you take care to keep it from overheating it performs excellently in our climate

I live in Maine and drive a 2007 Nissan Xterra X 4wd. I drove the Nokian's for two winters and the Bridgestone Blizzak WS 80 for two winters. The Nokians were quieter but that's all they beat the Bridgestones at.Better wet stopping,better snow and ice performance.

Hello Justin. I run those tires on my WRX and they have amazing traction. My driveway starts at a steep incline and I can let the clutch out and let it crawl up the drive. I live in North Bay so I encounter similar conditions as you would have your way.

Nothing wrong with the Hakka R3... I went through a set on my Volvo S60T5. However, last winter we got the new Michelin x-ice SNOW on our Volvo and the Z71 Tahoe. The new X-Ice SNOW gets my vote and they are made in Canada!

Living in the countryside in Sweden at this time of year you need good winter tires. I have tried X-ice and Hakka before but right now I have Continental IceContact 2 with spikes and I must say that they are probably the best tires I have had. Driving my MB E class 4matic 2018 with these tires are awsome even when the snow continues to rain and slushy conditions. And they do not give so much roadnoise either. You should really try Continental to compare, they are really good.

I travel to Sweden often, in your country they use gravel and sand on the roads where as here in Canada they use salt. In addition to that most jurisdictions have made studded tires illegal, a shame really.

I always have gone with the general altimax artic winter tires on all my cars, 2005 saab 9-3 aero, 99 subaru legacy GT, I recently got myself a 2015 mustang and I was going to get the altimax artic again, but as an inexperienced RWD driver i want the best and I dont mess with safety, thanks for the video and yes this are $1000 JUST FOR THE TIRES🙄 and not including the installation, you cant put a price on safety and it will cost you more to fix your car in an accident than to invest on a great winter tire.

@@peni80085 I'll take your word for it, as my experience with winters is limited to a cheap Chinese set of tires and these Toyo tires lol. Admittedly Observes weren't my first choice, I wanted the Blizzaks. But I bought my car in October and it still had summers on so I was in a bit of a rush to find anything in the size I needed and the Toyos were the first ones I could find. When these need replacing though I'll be looking at the Hakkas, Continental and Michelin selections.

I have two cars: A Golf with Hakka R3s; and a Golf Alltrack with Continental Viking Contact 7s. The Continentals have better lateral grip, otherwise just as impressive as the Hakkas. Same price for both here in Calgary. I'd get both again. No regrets.

Didn't try them in deep snow? I"m looking for best light SUV tires for unplowed snow. I have to go to work every morning, and many days I have to drive in deep snow (after a snow storm), before the city snow removal could reach my area. I'd like to call sick every time there's a snow storm, but I unfortunately can't. I always keep "traction aids" in my trunk, but I much prefer not having to use them!

Had bought 6 sets of Hakka in the past for two vehicles. Were excellent tires until the R2 and R3 SUV, my current tire. R2 severe dry rot cracking all over sidewalks and in tread grooves before warranty expiry of 5 years. Only 24,000 winter kms on tire and stored clean, dry in plastic tire bags in garage with no electric Motors around. R3 Suv is on my new suv and has seen 7,000 winter kms and has severe dry rot cracks in tread grooves. We drive very Conservatively and never in 41 years of driving have I experienced this before with any tire. But these two sets were Made in Russia and they must have quality issues coming from there. My previous Made in Finland tires were excellent. Since April 2022 to End of Sept 2022 I have been trying to have Nokian America’s to honor their warranty. Spaced out my approach to Nokian and to my tire dealer whom mentioned they were contacting Nokian also when no response heard I contacted them directly through me in writing with photos of damage and dot numbers and receipts. So during these 5 months and leaving about 3 voice mail messages and two emails and a Twitter post, I had no response. So Nokian does not honor any warranty of theirs. AS A RESULT, I WILL NO LONGER BE BUYING ANY NOKIAN PRODUCTS FOR MY VEHICLES

I have X-Ice tires on my IS 250 AWD and love them. I migrated my Honda Passport from Blizzaks to the Hackas and I have to agree they are much better. Handling is better on wet pavement and much quieter than the Blizzaks.

@@keslee7036 I think I like the X-Ice better on a car because of how my car handles in the snow. It ploughs more. The truck is heavier and handles much different, and the hackas seem to do a better job of helping me maintain control when turning. It is hard to explain.

I live around the Toronto area, where 95% of the time in the winter, the roads are bare and dry, with no snow at all on them. All-season tires turn into slippery hockey-pucks in the cold, so they are useless on those 5% of the days when it does snow. All I really need are tires that are NOT as slippery as those all-season tires, but that can be left on all year long, and the Nokia WR-G4 All-Weather tires are exactly what I need. Not as good as the R3, but close.

I just got the WRG4s yesterday. They seem really good with the light snow we got Saturday. I expect they'll do great in a real snow storm too. I'm used to driving all seasons year round so I expect the Nokians will be a big improvement in snow.

It takes at least a 300Km on pavement to wear off the mold smoothness of a new tire to obtain full performance. So grip, unless you drove them some prior to getting on the snow, was not fully representative of their actual performance.

I have WS-90,WS-80 and Hakka R3. WS-90 is a BIG improvement over WS-80. R3 vs WS-90 vs X-Ice -true is-Whichever come cheaper on your size.

Nokian was involved in a scandal some years back because they were sending the press softer tires then those that they market. Are you sure that they didn't do this this time around by sending you softer tires?

I have a hard time understanding how you can compare Michelin X-Ice - a tire for icy road low snow - vs an extreme winter tire like the Hakka R3. R3 are made for roads with snow on top and ice under it, something the X-Ice aren't designed for. The road surface you tested is good the the X-Ice and Pirelli's because there is no snow on tops and almost no ice either. The R3 will of course also be good on that surface too, but in a snow storm with unknows surface condition and 4+ inches of snow on top, you will see the difference with the R3, I can guarantee you that.

What happens if you drive these tires on the dry roads as well? I mainly use my SUV for ski trips and was considering getting a set of these R3. It is snowy up in the mountains but for majority of the trip it is on the highway. I am used to having track tires that wear out in a few thousand miles for my sports car so getting under 10k miles is not a big deal. I am mainly asking if they will overheat or otherwise not be suitable for the highway. Thanks.

I found that once the X ice tires reach 50 percent of tread life they were worse than an all seasons.I will not buy this tire again.

Very interested in the Hakka's... have to drive a lot of gravel road every day, which also can get extremely muddy tike after time...which tire would fit better the R3 or the Hakka 10? Or maybe something way different? Don't want the tire die after one season with all the gravel. Thx

I live in northern bc. Bought a pair of toyo observe gsi5 and not really impressed (in a AWD Toyota RAV4) they’re good in with thicker snow but ice and slippery I found in sliding on the freeway corners. Might have to upgrade. Do you ever turn off traction control is snowy driving? I’ve heard many people say it’s better.

Cornering lights - when the tires are turned left, the left fog light fades on to light up more of the left side of the car, and ditto for the right.

Always in matched sets of four; especially for winter tires or you'll get massive differences in front/rear traction & handling.
