I haven't read the manual and I don't own a Legend but I always though the iron filter(bias) was to aide in masking/unmasking while the iron stability was to aid in cleaning up chirps and squeeks in a heavy iron environment. I don't know why I thought that, the word stability I suppose. It would be interesting to see this same test in a pile of nails and then with a higher conductor added in to see how that may or may not effect things. It's also possible the stability is adding some type of shape recognition into the software. So the higher you go, the less priority long or odd shaped items(which may be iron) are ranked while the iron filter is using a more wide open shape acceptance but prioritizing conductivity alone? Hmmm.

Very interesting! I thought that was how it worked as well. Almost like the description or labels of if and st are reversed based on their explanation in the manual. Going to have to do some of these tests myself and try it out. Good info 👍

Setting the tone break to 8 set the stage for all your results. The IF and St just changed the target ID of the nail. You claimed it detected at ID 8 or higher, and then not detected below 8 although still detected and shown at a lower tone and volume.

I thought that St was indeed an incremental adjustment of IF, but for some reason they made it go in larger steps, i.e. instead of going in 1/5th on St (St 5 been equal to 1 notch on IF), they made 1 St = 1/3 (or maybe even 1/2) IF. Just not sure whether it's a bug or feature… Guess more elevated nail testing is in order.

@@tnsharpshooter8517 So far it seems that we have a triangle of relevant settings - IF, St and tone break. Tweaking either one will affect the target recognition and may require tweaking the other two (let's leave the recovery speed alone for the sake of argument). For example, messing with IF and/or St will likely change the junk's VDI, resulting in need to adjust the tone break… I propose an experiment: find a gold item that reads 8 under factory settings, then see what it looks like when you lower IF and full around with St. And of course, try it in elevated nail test, see what happens.

Use iron filter to notch out whatever then once it starts to get chirping go to stability setting and get rid of the chirping is only way I can interpret
