Your have explained it so well to those young people who may be interested in this industry. Being someone who did articles ages ago 2006 - 2009 I can completely agree with the Statement regarding putting all your effort as later it will catch up with you. Our director then during induction would tell us to never play with out articles as we will be CA(SA)'s who many not even know how to complete their Tax Return. Being so young and a first year trainee i never understood what he meant . But many years later i eventually understood that he wanted us to show up and be the best so that one do not lack experience as later on after articles they will be expected to show up and know everything. Because once you qualify there is no room for mistake or not knowing. Your sort expected to know . Having 10 years post articles I have met and worked with different CA(SA)s from different Audit firms (TIPP) and or organization (TOPP) and i must say it matters were you do your articles. Although i must say it is an incredible career

Yohh I'm so glad I watched this video I really need to think long and hard about where I want to train but I really want to go the TOPP route because that's where my heart is and I don't like auditing at all but the thought of having to have 75% yeses 😂😂 is this in your CTA or undergrad? Also would you say it's best if one applies for both TOPP & TIPP firms during the CTA and go for whatever comes 1st? Also when it comes to signing the contact do they give you like a time frame of when you should sign it or it's immediate like they put you under pressure to sign? Sorry for asking so many questions 😅

Hi Joel ☺️ hope you’re good. TOPP companies include Investec, Allan Gray, all the banks (Nedbank, RMB, etc.), Shoprite etc. I’m not sure about what their daily schedule looks like and how tax focused it is - but would suggest trying to find people on LinkedIn who are working those roles and ask to set up a call or inbox Them a few questions. I’m terms of TIPP: you won’t see a lot of tax in your articles to be quite honest. You’ll evaluate basic tax calls and if it’s intense or for a listed company we usually call in a specialised Tax team from the audit firm. So maybe you could still do normal TIPP but then ask to work in the tax department whenever your planning clears up and you have a gap (happens like one a year for like a week , so you don’t really have much flexibility unfortunately but it probably differs from firm to firm).

TIPP sometimes allows people without CTA to start their articles early. I know Auditor General, PWC and newly Deloitte allow CTA students to start their articles.

Can’t really confirm figures but I would say in the JHB offices approx 300 trainees each year. Then SA as a whole would be like 600 trainees (the other trainees split across the other offices). But I’m literally sucking these numbers out my thumb😂 / trying to think of the number of people I’ve seen in trainings. I could be wrong.
