Ryan was a much more cerebral player than some people realize.

I love that you talk about how Ryan is driving with the lat instead of pulling with the pec. I'm convinced that the late arm pec pull is extremely injurious to the shoulder and elbow.

Definitely plays a role. We've seen in studies that pec activation is very minimal in elite/healthy throwers vs amateur/injured throwers. Excessive pec activation indicates "pulling" of the arm forward rather than rotating which will cause lots of anterior apprehension at the shoulder and an increased impulse at the elbow.

Great vid. My favorite parts: talking about how he changed his arm path to be more compact, trunk tilt. I am amazed at how closed he actually was. If you find good video of him from behind, you can see how far over on the rubber he is, and then how far his landing foot closes toward 3rd base. Does landing so closed have something to do with his long term health? I believe studying Nolan Ryan can help the TJ crisis.

I don't think he landed too closed but rather it was within a normal range. Landing too closed can cause a plethora of biomechanical deficiencies. (deficient trunk rotation, excessive sidebending, lack of pelvic rotation) Nevertheless, those are from extreme cases. Throwers should land slightly closed to maximize efficiency which Ryan did extraordinarily! Hope this helps!

This is great!!!! It would be terrific if you did other professional pitchers. Especially if you compared some of the old timers to some of the newer guys. I feel like, generally speaking, pitching mechanics have changed for the worse in the recent decade or two.

I am not sure about that. I would take each pitcher on a case by case basis.

Does he sit into his back leg? What does collapsing the backside mean?
