My goodness that’s the best brushback in the history of baseball. The helmet flying, the hair flying, the ninja mid air leg kick, the dirt flying, the stare towards the mound.. Brett stays calm, Noles never leaves the mound.. Even with the umpire bump no one was ejected which was cool.. man great stuff.. Jomboy has to do this one

Let's keep in mind though that they still play NLCS and ALCS games during the day. Like you, I'd also like to see the occasional WS day game....but only on Saturday or Sunday. If I've waited most of my life to experience my team in a WS I would hate to choose between taking off work or missing a game if they ever played a weekday game(which, let's face it, they're realistically never going to do again anyway).

Dickie Noles has said that he was definitely trying to brush him back. Many years later, Brett asked Dickie if he was throwing a brushback pitch, and Noles said yes. Brett LOVED it. Brett said that it changed the series. One of the many reasons I love George Brett. He knew how the game was played and understood the situation. He didn't charge the mound because he knew exactly what Noles was doing for the Phillies.

That's odd, I read a Sports Illustrated back when he was still pitching, on the subject of brush backs. Noles said,, "If the batter leans over the plate too much, and needs to see the stitches on a baseball, I'll be only to happy to show them to him." The interviewer said, "What about if you bean him?" Noles shrugged and said, "That's what batting helmets are for." That "meshes" with what you said about him being down-to-earth I barely knew who he was, but I took an instant dislike to him after reading that, so, the above incident, which I don't even remember (I only remembered that the Royals lost, as a lifelong NL fan, I still almost rooted for them, because they had disposed of the hated Yankees in the ALCS), isn't exactly a surprise, in retrospect.

Royals were up 5-0 at the time of that pitch. They would score only 4 runs over the next 22 innings. From my vantage point, which was hanging on to every pitch of that Series, the momentum definitely shifted. I was so used to my Phils getting close but then finding a way to lose up to that point. For some reason as Teenagers that made me and my buddies so mad. lol We could not stand Pete Rose back then. But later on, became a fan of Rose. One of the best to ever play the game.

That's OK. Just three seasons later, the Baltimore Orioles disposed of Pete Rose and the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in the WS and it was f**king beautiful. I wasn't so much a Rose hater (in fact, found him very entertaining) as an Orioles lover. The Phils took the opener and then the Birds just rolled, adding insult to injury by shutting the Phils out 5-0 in Game Five. (And I repeat: IT WAS F**KIN' BEAUTIFUL!)

I would have expected Brett to charge the mound all bug-eyed and screaming like when he was called out in the infamous Pine Tar game!

Career highlights.. George Brett-MVP, WS MVP, 3 time batting champ, 3000 hits, Hall of Fame Dickwad Noles-Threw a pitch at a guys head in the WS. Had a white guy perm. Looked sort of like that kid Rudy in the movie 'Meatballs'.

I remember this WS, but not this incident. My thought now is the contrast in Brett's reactions between this and the pine tar incident.

i was at this game, (hey ron) willie mays aikens hit 2 home runs, the thing i remember was pete rose coming down the first base line like he was going to start something, that's what most of the booing was about, too much of this series is made of this "brushback". george brett didn't get intimidated. what was more important was the phillies keeping willie wilson off the bases, 230 hits, 133 runs, and 79 stolen bases that year, willie had a horrible series with 4 hits and 12 strike outs. along with frank white only getting 2 hits in 25 ab's.

Rose came out to tell Frey that Dickie was under orders by him to throw at Brett well it was supposed to be Aikens.

Aikens precipitated this incident. Aikens had showed up Noles by admiring his earlier homer off Noles. Noles intended to brush back Aikens next time but changed his mind after getting ahead of Brett 0-2.

That hook was nasty , I also pitched and have thrown up and in , not to hit them but to set up the next pitch or to let them know i will come in there , even the great George Brett can get a little rattled . MAN I MISS PITCHING !

@@peteshallcross787Lol Dodger fan. Honestly, Brett was one of my favorite players as a kid. I wore #5 my entire time playing baseball. I just love old fashioned hard ball.

Me too, it ain't like it use to be. Someone flipped a bat back then they'd have one in their chin the next time up, no one dared. My guy was #24, the "say hey" kid and my son wore the same number. Loved the old Dodger teams of the 60s but when gimpy Gibson , and I like Kurt, pinch hit against Eckersley I said to my tv, "Don't throw him a breaking ball!" Lol, the rest is arm pumping history! Happy New Year from WI!@@bobbyshizz2138

I dont understand why a batter can't let his bat go "accidently " on the next pitch. Certainly can't throw it as hard as a baseball, so it's not nearly as dangerous.
