I find it remarkable that Chatwin isn't much in fashion these days, seeing as he's one of the 20th century's most original stylists in terms of prose imagery as well as his rich combination of forms--travel, adventure, material culture, art history, anthropology, philosophy and the pastoral, and so on. I recommend the essay by Sebald in 'Campo Santo' which turned me on to Bruce Chatwin. I thought, if he's good enough for Sebald, he's good enough for me.

Dustin, maybe no one wants anything to do with his truly sad end as a very prominent HIV/AIDS-victim. I really have no other explanation . . . . .Beside that he was a hefty controversial personality, and truth and fiction sometimes intermixed by him in a painful way. And he surely made e n e m i e s with it - world wide ! I urge you to read Nicholas Shakespeare´s biografie about Bruce, maybe that brings light into the story ! By the way: How lies can r u i n a carreer you can clearly see in the sad story about the german author C. Relotius, who admitted to be a primitive f o r g e r. Here a quote from an interview with Werner Herzog (kind of warning label) by "DER SPIEGEL" in the internet: "This interview was conducted by Claas Relotius, who has since admitted to having falsified several texts for various media, in particular "Der Spiegel". According to his own statement, he also "condensed some passages" in this interview. We are currently examining the origin of the interview and the individual passages and will delete the interview if necessary after the examination. And exactly that can surely be a "death sentence" for a n y author - even BC !!

@@AL_THOMAS_777 Hello Al, thank you very much for your thoughtful reply. I intend to read Nicholas Shakespeare's biography of Chatwin. I suppose my comment has to do with people not knowing Chatwin even exists, let alone that he was controversial in his lifetime. This story about Relotius is interesting, too. I did not know about him. You've piqued my interest. I understand that Sebald also upset some people because he lied about some of his sources. Certainly the issue of ethics in literary production is a worthy topic for debate and investigation. Take care, Al

So true. Just take a look at the "facts" of the incubator-lie in the US before the war with Irak !

Herzog's film is about Chatwin, of course, but I think it's even more a film about ghosts

I love how Werner Herzog bats away pretentious or irrelevant questions without insulting the audience member, but clearly wishing something better would come along...

He should really make a movie now, especially about the final chapter of the downfall of america...
