Fantastic video. Educational, informative and absorbing. What a wonderful way to concrete the relationship between two families; this community cooperation is what is missing from the Western world. I'm Somali and their language sounded familiar (Afaan Borana/Oromo, Sidama, Somali, Afar). It turns out they are fellow Cushitics. I never heard of them before this video and I'm pretty well versed on the Horn of Africa and particularly, the Cushitic family. Nice. Their homes are similar to Konso people, another Cushitics in southern Ethiopia I can pick qotu (come), qabo (catch/hold), sodoh (inlaws but could mean boy for them), labo (bend), etc. It's very close to Afaan Oromo/Borana.

Not only the languages but the architectures also. I am reading little details from konso dwellings that arbore use, and close to them are the dassenetch who weave reeds like the afar close to somalia. I think people move around, form alliance, share ideas and language.

Their homes are more spacious as well and have permanent perimeter walls made from stones. As a Somali, I noticed right away the language. Proto-Somali indeed. Societies used to help each others build homes but this changed with only limited people having "skills" to build modern requirements. Imagine if your entire neighbourhood knew how to build a double storey modern home. Even though modern society lost the helping factor, still I believe many neighbours would help each others not to mention families instead of getting debt for life (mortgage) These people enjoy free life. No debt. No stress.

Another fascinating video. I find it very interesting that they begin by laying out what looks like a perfect circle. Did they measure that? And then another question not related to the building itself, but relating to the women. First of all, they are very elaborately dressed and have elaborate hairstyles, whereas the men are very commonly dressed. The women also have these heavy (I think) belts, the top of which is made of shells, but the bottom looks like it's metal? I couldn't really see that. They obviously have equal responsibilities as the men on the building project. And later during the night, the elaborate belts are gone. Thank you - this is quite the exploration!

Hi Elisabeth, the circle is just done by eye. I have seen many cultures do this with amazing precision. There are also many cultures in which the women have kept a sense of tradition and the men dropped their clothing etc. This may be because the men visit local towns, or because they feel embarassed at their traditions. I am editing a video on the HImba where this is extreme. All women dress identically and traditionally, all men are in (free, charity) western clothes. As to the belts, sometimes people put things on when I am there filming but after a while they forget I am there. In the case of the Arbore I just turned up by accident just as they were starting to build, but I think they still wanted to dress up a little.
