I first came to Port Stephens back in the late 1950’s with my parents and sibs. Later I came on my own when I was in my late teens in the sixties. Back then Tomaree was a mental hospital but there were no gates and the patients were free to roam around but we didn’t feel threatened. There wasn’t much up there at the time, just the sleepy village at Shoal Bay with no traffic, very little commerce and it was just perfect. The center of social activities centered around the Shoal Bay Country Club which was where we stayed. Most of the members were Jewish businessmen and their families from Sydney and it was held as a shared secret that we had our own private paradise. Dinner each night was a community activity with a social officer welcoming newly arrived guests and announcing activities for the evening or the next day and special announcements of birthdays or anniversaries. I loved it. When I last visited I fell madly in love with a girl there but it was unrequited (Susan S. you know who you are)! Thanks for posting this video. You did a great job of shooting and editing. Really enjoyed it! From California.

We agree. Jarryd's Dad does not live too far away from it and we had never been before. It was stunning

Great video guys, best one I’ve seen of Port Stephens on KZbin. We bought a house in Nelson Bay in Jan 2021 and will be moving in in Jan 2022. Watching your video has quelled any anxious nerves I’ve had about leaving Sydney, so I’ll be recommending this video to anyone who wants to know why we would move to Port Stephens. Hope to maybe bump into you on your next visit, will buy you a coffee at Little Nel’s.

Thank you so much. We stayed at the caravan park only because we had our campervan. We stayed in Nelson Bay and felt it was a great location and walking distance to everything we needed. Hope you have a great time there.
