@davedavids573 ай бұрын
Isn't a background check and Form 4473 basically asking for permission? Unlike in Central Europe it's actually stricter on who the government allows to own a gun. In the US if you have spent one night in a mental care home or had one single felony (even if it's not violent) conviction it is likely you will be banned from owning guns for life. If that happens the federal government will even steal them from you with no compensation. Most European countries don't have prohibition for single non violent felonies longer than ten years. If they take your guns due to a conviction or mental episode you can have them stored at an FFL or sold, not the case in the USA. There is no automatic ban on owning a gun if you have had past mental health treatment and you are now healthy. If you take drugs whilst safely storing your guns you don't lose your right to have them etc. Also in the US you aren't allowed to import any gun the federal government doesn't think is a sporting weapon. You have to pay $200 and wait a year per suppressor and you have really silly receiver and bolt laws that make many guns illegal when they are clearly not machine guns. The US is actually kind of sucky for gun owners especially if you take California, NY, NJ, Illinois, Washington etc etc into account.

You need a reason to own a gun in Kentucky. A state trooper pulled me over once a said " How come you have a AR-15 in your backseat" I said " I'm invading Tennessee!" He looked at me and said " sounds like a good reason " and went back to his car.

Finland is extremely good for gun ownership. Its hard for civilians to get automatic guns, but many dont know that if you get a collectors permit you can get pretty much anything. In other words, dont say you are getting it for self defense, say you are getting it as a hobby for fun range shooting.

I keep hearing for all of these countries that are supposed to be free to own a firearm, you need to get a license, or permit or show a justifiable need, limits on how many firearms you may own! These are privileges and not a right! So the USA at the moment is the only country where you have an inalienable right for firearms ownership, there are forces at work trying to remove that right!
@davedavids573 ай бұрын
OK firstly there are quite a few countries that allow you to just buy a gun from the gun store with just a background check. Typically just bolt action rifles, double barrelled shotguns, lever action shotguns, revolver carbines over 60cm. Austria and Switzerland for example. The big difference in licencing is shall vs may on issuing. It's like your background checks which are shall issue not may. Also it is a privilege in the US to have a gun too, it's actually a lot lot harder for felons (even non violent) and people who have spent just one night in a mental home to legally have a gun in the US than virtually anywhere in the world. Most countries don't have a federal criminal records database like the USA. Countries like Switzerland regard them as a danger to civil liberties as a gun shop owner could randomly look people up to see if they have a conviction. As such often a shall issue licence or permit acts like a confirmation that a background check has been passed. For instance in Switzerland if you want to buy a gun you have to get a background check bit of paper from the local police and then give that to the gun shop. They call it a permit to own but it's shall issue, they can't not give it to you. It's like a US background check, the FBI can't randomly decide you don't get a gun. Virtually every one of the 44 countries of Europe has some form of shall issue firearms licence. Sometimes you have to pass a test, but if you pass the test you get the gun, nowhere is that difficult, they can't say no. Even in England if you want a shotgun you don't have to have a reason. Just want a shotgun and after a note from your Dr and a background check and home visit you get a shotgun maximum 2+1 and you can buy as many as you want. The following European countries have shall issue for anything you can own in the US and often more (open bolt, SBR, converted machine guns etc), Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Lithuania. They will often ask why you want the gun, but it's just like a question on the 4473 and everyone just puts self defence or sport shooting. In Czechia their constitution even says it's a Czech persons inalienable right to shoot terrorists.

@user-zk8tg8ko1u7 ай бұрын
Iam from Czech Republic 🇨🇿 and Iam ok with our gun laws. If you make a test from gunlaw and first aid, and doctor says you are able to own guns (he will not, if you have mental problems in the past, or things like you miss one eye, you hear badly, etc...). So normal, healty person can own gun for any reason legally. You can also own as many guns you want, but you just have to upgrade your "security". When you have up to two guns, you dont have to own safe. You just must lock them the way, that thief for example must apply force to get them. So you can lock them in the house, and you are ok, because to get them, someone will have to throw a rock trough your window for example, and thats force. When you have up to 20 guns, you need safe, and more than 20, you need special room in your house with electric security. What also wasnt said is, that you can own fully automatic firearm, if you get permision from local police. But from that point, police can visit your house to check your security (if you dont have fullauto gun, they have to tell you ahead. Sorry for such long comment...😅 Have a nice day!

So basically the guns most people own in the US probably would not be allowed anywhere else but Yemen. I'm guessing many places that allow guns would require thee purchaser to be a citizen. When a gun is purchased the background form asks if your a citizen and a gun store owner told me if that is marked no he won't be able to sell the buyer a gun.

It is interesting to see the various attitudes towards this subject. There seems to be no correlation between gun laws, gun culture, and crime. I know many people are curious about concealed carry, but I suspect there are also many of us that have collections which we are reluctant to leave behind. Some of the best countries for historical collecting have the worst rules. My entire collection is functional, except one American shotgun and one Polish pistol. I could not move to a place that required them all to be deactivated (made non-functional). I will have to investigate the Czech Republic more now. Thank you!

Same, a lot of judgemental attitudes. This topics has been on my mind since seriously considering Andrew’s content. Canada surely has been scary lately, but the hunting culture I grew up with and the amount of untouched crown land here that is free to use for hunting and fishing etc, is something I think I would miss elsewhere. Maybe hard to understand for some people, but they shouldn’t judge so harshly. There is also the sentimental value for example hunting rifle/shotgun that is over 100years old and was passed down to me. Things would have to be insanely bleak in Canada for me to give those up to go somewhere else for good. NZ has a pretty strong hunting culture from what I gather but not sure it’s an upgrade politically or in terms of taxation. I’ve often wondered if the NC team has helped individuals move or create a plan b with this specific consideration in mind.

The "gun safe" areas are the areas where CRIMINALS have all the guns because there are no real men to act like responsible adults and handle necessary tools to protect themselves and their community. Men are a dying breed. Everyone wants to a nurturing female these days, while being protected by "professional men" who come to the rescure of the grown manbabies who can't handle adulthood because adult tools like guns are "too scary" for them.
