The Nabataeans were accustomed to living in barren deserts which puts them in an advantageous position to their enemies. And as they were skilful in stone carving and harvesting rainwater it made it easier for them to build their homes here. A recent study also says that Petra was built at this site so that the sun would illuminate the Nabataeans' sacred places.

There are free guided tours over here from visitor center to Petra. We took one. Glad to see it without tourists. Jordan is a small country, it has so much to offer. Tourism to some extent drives the economy of Jordan, too much loss for everyone around the world due to this pandemic

How Nabateans built the city? The reason is simple. Roman trade with India and SE Asia passed through the Arabian coast of the Red Sea, where Petra is the biggest city. They built the city on trade. Same were Mecca and Medina, on the same coast. The answer is that. Water was availed from Aquifers and Oases. Farming was limited. Only Camel rearing Roman Empire's Bread through trade.

There was no Mecca and Petra was real mecca where Islam started but in 695 Abdul bin Malik moved things from Petra to new place Mecca and mecca is never a coastal city an it is arid land not even fossils are found of any plantations or himan beings.. Petra was land of pre Islamic Arabs and Arabic language is based on Nabetean language.

@@Brutus0012 Mecca and Medina (Yathrib) were recorded by Roman explorers even in 20 BC. They definitely existed even before Islam, as villages on the trading routes to Yemen, from Petra. They were Pagan, Jewish and Christian populated, then. Coastal city of Jeddah is near to Mecca and in the Makkah province. Petra is the capital of North Arabs but other Arabs existed in the Peninsula. Hejazi in the Makkah and South Arabs in Yemen, who were Jewish. But where Islam started is of debate. Some say Petra, some Makkah, some Baghdad, some even in Jerusalem and Edessa. Islam might have started by tribes who lived in these regions but Banu Hashim was the most prominent, which was from Makkah.

And Petra later became a very important post on the Silk Route. The availability of water made it an oasis. The rocky hills surrounding the city made it naturally fortified as there were few passages into the city and could easily be defended. Petra was also a holy place with deities represented mostly in geometric shapes and forms like pyramid or circle carved into the walls in rocky structures and caves.

I really want you to stay safe as many times you sits on the edge of the cliff which isn't safe. Everything is secondary and life is the most precious gift. Don't take so much risks by walking on the edge of the cliffs and hills because it's really dangerous as you can't trust the grip of the rocks.
