Yeah I missed that lard melting part with no sound. You ever watch Ron Nails deer hide tanning videos. The guys amazing. It's not his channel but his name is in the title. I like ivory soap too.

I will check it out I never watched it ! Thanks my friend ! Hoping to get this hide finished and then start working on my new canoe :)

@@NomadicWoodsman Yeah Rons the master. Can't wait on the new canoe. You decide on which one? I hope you do a long version too. Maybe not real time but Your audience would like longer segments I'm sure. Passing your name along wherever I wander.

Doesn't Robert Badine use downy too? Your solution in the video is similar to what I used for my deer hides. I added egg yokes. It's fat but has a similar ingrediant as brains. The deer hides came out good but the downy solution I used on the cow hide did not and I hate the smell of that kind of crap. Don't even use drier sheets on my laundry. I think the smoke tanned them but didn't like the solution. I didn't listen with the audio on yet but will later. Wife has the news on , lol.

Yes Robert uses downy. I tried with the downy as well but I didn't like the perfume and strong perfume odour. With the dish soap and grease/lard/oil it doesn't smell anything and cleans the hide good. Also some feel like the downy might leave a bit of a waxy texture on the hide, I haven't done enough hides to see the difference but there are lots of different solution recipes all to their own liking and adaptation I guess ! :)

@@NomadicWoodsman Yup definately waxy residue but it's the stink I can't handle. I don't just dislike it , I've got this sinus condition that one smell of a fragrence like that I'll have a headache almost instantly. My solution I like is very similar to yours. Dollar store hand soap , egg yokes , and vegtable oil. For my deer hides I stretched them and wait a day or two until they are almost dry but not fully dry and rub the liquor on , both sides. I'll let it soak for overnight or whatever then take my stick , which is basically a stick with a broken off end which is roughly chisel shaped and work the hide by pushing against the hide. I'll hold the stick two handed and lean right into it. Like you did with the paddle. The hide is more upright , like Roberts set-up. I'll do it for an hour or so , usually not in one session then tighten it up. Usually rehydrate with more of the liquor and repeat until it's all white and soft. Oh , i forgot I do that twisting thing after it's de-haired and rinsed real well. After the hair and graining I'll redue the flesh side too. Then smoke like you did. I'm going to listen to this video as I didn't earlier so I might have another comment or some questions. I don't think we have that lemon soap down here. I think probably any good soap will work?
@NomadicWoodsman3 жыл бұрын
@@timothylongmore7325 Yes any good soap. I think this sunlight bar soap is an old school vintage soap that is like 3$ only for 2 bars and was used by grandparents probably. That being said sounds like any soap will do to be honest. Sounds like your method is similar to mine for sure ! I would like to have my hide more upright / vertical but without trees to have as upright posts it makes it harder to get the hide upright. Oh by the way, the sunlight bar soap is found at walmart in the laundry soap area, I found some as well at Sobeys grocery stores.
@timothylongmore73253 жыл бұрын
@@NomadicWoodsman I'll see if I can find some. We have Wallyworlds but no Sobeys. Often the old school stuff doesn't have all the chemical fragrences added. One thing your process includes that mine doesn't which is probably VERY important is your hide looked very dry and your solution was hot and runnier. I'll bet penetration is much better. I think my next deer skin I will stretch , let fully dry and use very warm , runnier solution. My cowhide I was doing was a failed bark tanned. Mostly 2" and 1.5" straps. They seemed "more" tanned but still stiff after moosehide , Badine style tanning. In one of roberts video he shows forked poles holding up his frame , making an "A" frame. Also check out Ron Nails rig. Maybe between your deck posts. I imagine if you rent or the wife objects that might be an issue.

@@timothylongmore7325 the water needs to be quite warm but not boiling hot. To help melt the soap and grease some people will have the ingredients in a pot first and stor it on the stove top with a bit of water. Then you can transfer it to some warm water in the rubbermaid tote. Important to get everything melted together. You can always wait a bit or add a bit of mild water if it is boiling hot, to get it just warm.
