Nombulelo Yende performing "Tatyana's letter scene" from Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin during the 2023 Cardiff Singer Of The World Main Prize Final.
The South African soprano started out in various theatres Capetown, in roles like Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Serpina (La serva padrona), and Carolina (Il matrimonio segreto), among others.
Nombulelo joined Oper Frankfurt's Opera Studio in the 2021/22 season, where she made her European debut singing Der Huter der Schwelle des Tempels and Falke (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Lover (Il tabarro) and Suor Dolcina (Suor Angelica). Upcoming roles include Tchaikovsky’s Charodeyka, Die Aufseherin (Elektra), and her role debut as Tatyana in Eugene Onegin.

Мне очень понравилось. Неожиданно хорошо. Слышится исполнение с пониманием текста и, главное, с чувством. Очень хорошая работа с языком. Все понятно, это очень не типично для иностранца. Обычно слышен непонятный набор звуков и мычание. За язык отдельное спасибо певице, это отдельная и большая работа. Оркестр тоже очень постарался, большое спасибо. Все вместе получилось душевно и красиво.

Фантастика! Каждая нота наполнена смыслом. Прекрасный, большой голос, безупречно в музыкальном отношении. @oksanakorneeva Earlier I meant only pronunciation, because under the video there was a comment about mediocre Russian of Ms Yende. To me, as a native speaker, such a remark seemed unfair. As for the meaning of the lyrics, I think it is not necessary to sing words, coloring their meaning, but to be able to express the essence. There is always a thought behind voice and sound. As a character thinks, so he or she speaks/sings. Yes, Nombulelo may have some discrepancies between the text and thought, but she has done the craft of preparation quite well. For a person of another culture, in principle, it is difficult to immerse herself in material truthfully in 100%. Just to my opinion, the craft is done quite well, deep art has not happened in that piece. In general, I must say that more and more non-Russian-speaking singers are singing competently and clearly in Russian. What can not be said with the same frequency about Russians singing in the main opera languages: Italian, French, German. Apparently, the desire to be professionals, great competitiveness and good work of language coaches do their job.

Прекрасно исполнила русскую арию. Вообще, опера - это потрясающе интернациональный, несмотря на свою элитарность, жанр искусства. Недавно молодая русская девушка (сопрано) тоже исполняла "Письмо Татьяны" в Китае. Конечно, ей есть чему поучиться у этой оперной Дивы, но попытка была и, на мой взгляд, она была весьма удачной. As you can see it is a TAXING aria. But she did well. I'm not crazy about her vibrato, particularly for deeply romantic-era pieces like this, but the beginning was stunning. But just look at the face of the concert master at 12:23- if you get that sort of reception from your musician peers, you know you're at the top of your game. Many of these orchestra members are die-hard opera fans and historians. They know good singing when they hear it. So, forget the audience. Often times, that's the least of a singer's problem. You need to win over the orchestra FIRST and FOREMOST. And while it wasn't her best, she is miles ahead of the competition. Her phrasing is wonderful ... I speak Russian and her pronunciation was impeccable. You could hear сначала, когда, всех!!! So bravo there. Just so many high points.

Very in tune, and a nice tone. Nicely phrased/inflected. Thick and wholesome, however, not full-bodied enough for a Russian role as this. Just a little too “lyrical”.. Still lovely though, all things said.

⁠@@SVG1976z^ How would you or anyone know? For an intents and purpose, Russian voices are Russian voices and they are almost entirely distinct to the Russian repertoire. As you can see, I said nothing negative about the skill level of her instrument.

I wish she had sung something else. She has such an incredible voice, but this selection doesn't show anything in terms of her ability at both ranges and instead only highlights her mediocre Russian. She deserves the big time, though. Best of luck to her.
