When first watching this video, I got the feeling I have seen this sort of non-battle battle somewhere else. Just not in manga or anime. And now, nearly 1,5 months later I suddenly got it. Phoenix Wright. When you point out a contradiction, the characters recoil, as if they have been hit. And when you get a really good obsjection, the witness will litteraly be blown away. Like, there is actual wind and their clothes get caught in the wind. It is a lawyer battle game.

What I love about Love is War is that while it works as absurdist comedy that conflict also has real stakes. Miyuki (the commoner) has a chip on his shoulder, a need to prove his superiority and force her into humbling herself so he won't be discarded for someone of higher status. Kaguya (the aristocrat) needs to corner him into taking all the risks so she doesn't have to face her oppressive family. There's this running theme in the story that sometimes people have good reasons to be shy, Ishigami certainly paid a price for following his heart.

You forgot an important aspect of Love is War, which is weird since you said that it's a culmination of everything you talked about. Most of the comedy stems from the fact that the battles in "non battle" battle anime only seem so intense from the perspective of combatants and if you can hear their inner monologues. If you zoom out and look at things objectively it can look funny or pathetic, which can be used for either comedy or drama. Later chapters discuss this matter more explicitly. This makes the series extremely self aware. Also, since the battle is unofficial and only within the minds of Miyuki and Kaguya, the "battles" don't matter. For a "battle" to occur you don't even need both of them, which puts even more emphasis on that point, which similarly can be used for either drama or fun. There are many instances where they actually win the "battle", but instead of capitalizing on the victory like they always fantasize, they back away because, again, the "battles" don't matter. They just don't want to face their feelings and the possibility of rejection because of their insecurities. You could say that they win the battle but lose the war *title drop*.
@the_senate8050

The OVA does it perhaps the clearest of all. They spend an extended segment parodying Shokugeki no Soma and poking fun at the intensity with which characters there treat their battles which are only that exciting because of the comentary to anyone outisde of the loop.

@@Marveryn i found out some of the author earlier stuff to be really similar to some of the series in bakuman, for example there's a time travel manga written by ohba about jumping forward time which is pretty much the same story as the one in bakuman, both real life and fiction version got cancelled early which i also find interesting. And there's also some plot elements that were inspired by real life cases like in the bakuman manga the manga reversi is about to reach its conclusion but the editor declines it cause the anime hasn't being aired yet at the moment meaning if there were no manga being published along side of the anime there will be no commercial push for the manga from the anime. This is the exact same thing that happened to death note when L dies in the story the manga was supposedly going to end and light reign supreme in the end but the editor declines it because the anime hasn't being aired yet so they had to make new arc and antagonist which is near and mello

How cool would it be if there was a “non battle battle series” about game development? I can see a collection of individuals each with their own skill set trying to kickstart an indie game company. And the “big threat” of the story is the game itself. Glitches, budget restrictions, ideas that seem really cool on paper but are ultimately broken. You can have a lot of drama, tension, and even heartbreak over watching these people struggle to create a game that they are passionate about and believe in. You want to see them succeed. I’d read/watch the hell out of that. ❤️

just make a documentation about the development of No Mans Sky lol i swear the development of that game is a straight up battle manga including things like a flood destroying the office, publisher pushing for a certain deadline, major PR slip ups and, ultimately, a redemption arc for the dev team where they prove the world wrong in thinking they were scumbags. How much more non-battle battle can real life get?

I love how Araki very early on realized that straight-up "my power level is bigger than yours" fights were unsustainable and likely to become cliche'd, so he switched the focus on the kind of metaphysical 4D chess that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is now famous for. It's especially ironic that JJBA ended up being a huge influence on shounen manga, which ended up getting a reputation for cliche'd "my power level is bigger than yours" fight scenes.

Indeed! It did take him pretty much the length of part three to really get a feel for writing stands in an interesting way but by part four most of the stand battles moved towards mind games and manipulating an advantage using their stands over the mostly simple stand designs of part three. I am a particular fan of the way stands in later parts started to have prerequisites or conditions where they would be over powered and most of the fights revolved around setting up those conditions.

Yeah. The manga has a very strong sense of character emotions and uses it a lot. It's almost like a mix between shounen and shoujou in that sense.

I like how this video gives the credit to Zero Escape (999) by using its music even though it's a game. While not being an anime, it perfectly fits the topic being one of the strongest mind-battle thriller I've ever played. That's quite a nice detail.

Kaguya sama love is war is absolutely one of my favorite anime I have ever watched. It somehow manages to capture the very best intelligent combat from early Naruto, ground it in a real world of rules and amp the tension up with every exchange, and each character is so complex that the joint and everchanging dynamic is absolutely expulsive. The best part is, I really have hope that this one won't devolve into giant Kaiju bellowing at each other... I hope anyway! :)

It'd be about two boards of people (generals, politicans, directors, etc.) Having "battles" with each other by choosing which third world country to give weapond to, which politician to assassinate, and which person to support. So like the world is a chessboard and the US and USSR are the opponents lol

Nice use of the 999 ost Eyepatch. It would be really cool to see you do a video on the Zero Escape series, as I don't think that series gets nearly enough love or attention as It should.

ZombieMonkey7 I know right? It really sucks how a bunch of people haven't played it. Visual novels are such a underrated genre of video-games. I watched a play through of "We know The Devil", and I would really like to make a visual novel with its art style and have a music style reminiscent of It and the zero escape series.

@@rainyparadox6208 Not a fan of We Know The Devil at all, and I'm really into visual novels and I thought I would get into it. All in all it seemed a bit on the nose. Since you definitely seem into VNs I'll recommend a strange duo of games you may or may not have heard of/played. With the **big exception** of The Zero Escape series, surprisingly the two best written VN I've played have been lewd anime trash. The first being a wonderfully heartfelt game of romance and acceptance of oneself and others in Katawa Shoujo. Highly recommend if you haven't played it, as it is 100% free and a VN classic. Comes off as a smutty trash heap without proper context, also it was made by 4chan (and somehow turned out okay?) The second being the most nihilistic view of humanity, and actual bleach to the eyes in video game form in Song of Saya (Saya No Uta) written by Gen Orobuchi the guy behind Madoka Magica/Psycho Pass. I don't recommend this game, unless you like suffering and extremely, extremely, extremely uncomfortable sex scenes. Both of these game feature sex, and neither of them are exploiting that for some cheap views. But Saya manages to capture it in the most repulsive way possible. More info on Saya here if it catches your eye, but don't know what to make of it kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHewaoClpraVaa8

I was more into the presentation of We Know the devil than the VA itself, namely the character designs, music. I really reminded me of Oxenfree in its tone, which I also really enjoyed. I'll look up katawa shojo and see if I like it. As for Saya no Uta...Well...I watched one of the endings because it was in an episode of "Games You Might Not Have Tried" by Extra Credits, and uh well...I had one of my little existential dread/all consuming depression fits. I really don't think I can take it lol, but thanks anyways!n
