What I love about Love is War is that while it works as absurdist comedy that conflict also has real stakes. Miyuki (the commoner) has a chip on his shoulder, a need to prove his superiority and force her into humbling herself so he won't be discarded for someone of higher status. Kaguya (the aristocrat) needs to corner him into taking all the risks so she doesn't have to face her oppressive family. There's this running theme in the story that sometimes people have good reasons to be shy, Ishigami certainly paid a price for following his heart.

You forgot an important aspect of Love is War, which is weird since you said that it's a culmination of everything you talked about. Most of the comedy stems from the fact that the battles in "non battle" battle anime only seem so intense from the perspective of combatants and if you can hear their inner monologues. If you zoom out and look at things objectively it can look funny or pathetic, which can be used for either comedy or drama. Later chapters discuss this matter more explicitly. This makes the series extremely self aware. Also, since the battle is unofficial and only within the minds of Miyuki and Kaguya, the "battles" don't matter. For a "battle" to occur you don't even need both of them, which puts even more emphasis on that point, which similarly can be used for either drama or fun. There are many instances where they actually win the "battle", but instead of capitalizing on the victory like they always fantasize, they back away because, again, the "battles" don't matter. They just don't want to face their feelings and the possibility of rejection because of their insecurities. You could say that they win the battle but lose the war *title drop*.
@the_senate8050 Жыл бұрын
The OVA does it perhaps the clearest of all. They spend an extended segment parodying Shokugeki no Soma and poking fun at the intensity with which characters there treat their battles which are only that exciting because of the comentary to anyone outisde of the loop.

And there's also some plot elements that were inspired by real life cases like in the bakuman manga the manga reversi is about to reach its conclusion but the editor declines it cause the anime hasn't being aired yet at the moment meaning if there were no manga being published along side of the anime there will be no commercial push for the manga from the anime. How cool would it be if there was a “non battle battle series” about game development? I can see a collection of individuals each with their own skill set trying to kickstart an indie game company. And the “big threat” of the story is the game itself. Glitches, budget restrictions, ideas that seem really cool on paper but are ultimately broken. You can have a lot of drama, tension, and even heartbreak over watching these people struggle to create a game that they are passionate about and believe in. You want to see them succeed. I’d read/watch the hell out of that. ❤️

I love how Araki very early on realized that straight-up "my power level is bigger than yours" fights were unsustainable and likely to become cliche'd, so he switched the focus on the kind of metaphysical 4D chess that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is now famous for. It's especially ironic that JJBA ended up being a huge influence on shounen manga, which ended up getting a reputation for cliche'd "my power level is bigger than yours" fight scenes.
@Nowaylarry3 жыл бұрын
Indeed! It did take him pretty much the length of part three to really get a feel for writing stands in an interesting way but by part four most of the stand battles moved towards mind games and manipulating an advantage using their stands over the mostly simple stand designs of part three. I am a particular fan of the way stands in later parts started to have prerequisites or conditions where they would be over powered and most of the fights revolved around setting up those conditions.

@@rainyparadox6208 Not a fan of We Know The Devil at all, and I'm really into visual novels and I thought I would get into it. All in all it seemed a bit on the nose. Since you definitely seem into VNs I'll recommend a strange duo of games you may or may not have heard of/played. With the **big exception** of The Zero Escape series, surprisingly the two best written VN I've played have been lewd anime trash. The first being a wonderfully heartfelt game of romance and acceptance of oneself and others in Katawa Shoujo. Highly recommend if you haven't played it, as it is 100% free and a VN classic. Comes off as a smutty trash heap without proper context, also it was made by 4chan (and somehow turned out okay?) The second being the most nihilistic view of humanity, and actual bleach to the eyes in video game form in Song of Saya (Saya No Uta) written by Gen Orobuchi the guy behind Madoka Magica/Psycho Pass. I don't recommend this game, unless you like suffering and extremely, extremely, extremely uncomfortable sex scenes. Both of these game feature sex, and neither of them are exploiting that for some cheap views. But Saya manages to capture it in the most repulsive way possible. More info on Saya here if it catches your eye, but don't know what to make of it kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHewaoClpraVaa8
