There's 1 thing I want to correct Kathy on. It's NEVER to late to start playing games. Games are a whole world and whether you want to take a walk in a park or climb a mountain there's stories and wonder everywhere and a place for everyone. All you have to do is choose to explore.

It always helps if there's someone experienced who can somewhat gauge your capability and taste for you. Like I cannot make my mom play many 3d games, because she cannot move the camera AND the character simultaneously, so I have to give her a pretty low-stakes/stress 3d game to play.

Always love Kathy's glasses. 10000% agree with her take on people connecting beyond just LISTENING to it. Game music can have a much stronger emotional impact on someone who was there, experiencing a moment, at just the right moment for them, while that music played. The music is tied to their experiences hearing it and the context under which it was presented. Much like movie scores. People will rarely be able to hear Morricone's movie scores without thinking of the movies the songs were in.

I love these conversations so much, it's great that you were able to bring Kathy Kelly back! First off, omg sharing Scars of Time with her broke my heart. I adore that song so much, it's one of my favorite video game songs and yet also the first one I learned on woodwind and keys back when I was a Concert player. Such a pleasure to see how much she enjoyed that. Secondly, it's fascinating to me how much her take on musicians of both disciplines learning from and adapting to each other reminds me of another conversation regarding voicework and acting. The late great Kevin Conroy often spoke about how, before taking the voice role of Batman, he was actively a classical stage actor but struggling at a point to find greater opportunities because that world was so barricaded into itself. His taking to voicework and enjoying it so much opened the door for many other actors to try it out and appreciate the new medium, but his Shakespearean knowledge and experience elevated his voice acting significantly as well. My honest hope, as someone who has lived in both video game and concert music and happily transitioned to scoring for animation now, is to see more and more musicians and music producers share in dialogues like this. The classically trained coming to compose for modern media, the new generation of composers sharing their hand into classic formats and orchestras… Everyone will not only benefit from the healthy exchange of ideas and sounds but also fans and supporters of all camps will cross-pollinate and it will keep music in all forms genres and vibrations healthy and respected into the future. I've said it before Marco, but what you're doing with this channel is so special and I'm excited for how this channel and your own path will continue to blossom.

A really important aspect of Undertale's impact in context: it's not just informed by the story, it's also the extensive use of leitmotif throughout the game and the fact that Undertale is effectively a medley of music from throughout the entire game.

2:15 (ish) - If we're talking about that strumming, that was probably a Saz. There's also a Byzantine Lyre, and multiple other instruments. The band is called Percival Schuttenbach, a Polish folk metal band that CDPR consistently contracts for Witcher's music. On that note, there's also another band that did music for Witcher 2 called Żywiołak, maybe next time you could show Kathy some music from that game :D Also my Polish wife says that both bands are very nice people and she says she's sure if you reached out to them (they speak English) that they'd be more than happy to have a chat with you about the instruments they use
@celestialcolosseum
@celestialcolosseum Жыл бұрын
Bit of a nitpick here but it's actually called "bağlama", most people call it saz but that's not the actual name of the instrument, saz just means "instrument" in Turkish. Bağlama is the actual name of the instrument, and Percival kinda modified it to fit their sound which i like. It sounds much heavier and crude with those thick strings on it, although retaining the similar sound characteristic.

Baba Yetu is so deeply stirring and I loved seeing that you both almost seemed to have that same lump in your throat talking about it afterwards because really just, wow, yeah, me too As someone who studied to become an operatic singer, finished my degree and then never took the 'final' step of actually *entering* the opera scene, auditioning, etc, its deeply refreshing to see others in this particular (occasionally especially closed-minded) niche of the classical world having such an appreciation of this music! I fully agree with what Kathy said about the power and value of opening our doors, so to speak; thinking with a little less focus on exclusive, pure preservation of tradition, and with more value in transformation and seeing what beauty can come from the sharing of different communities and cultures to create something new

Starting off with Witcher 3? Fuck yes. Tears of the Kingdom? FF6? FF7? FF16? Bangers. A bunch absolute bangers this time. I’m not gonna list them all, but I think this episode was super strong. Kathleen talking about how listeners have become so invested in certain pieces is just amazing. The songs that resonate with me are not just because of the pieces, it’s the pieces along with the experiences. It’s why I feel like video games (and it’s music) is so powerful. You have an ACTIVE connection to the music. Also, congrats on the Sponsor!

I swear I heard Baba Yetu out of the context of the the Civ games a long long time ago. What a joy to have that core memory unlocked And Kathy hit the nail on the head. The advantage of having played games makes their soundtracks resonate more because we have experienced them-we moved the story along; we were flipping the pages. And yet, even without knowing any context, there is a story to VGM scores just like there is to opera.

Always a joy to see you two having fun like that. The last piece in particular made me cry. Games like Civilization are really incredible. The historic ones are just as much educational as enjoyable, and can be a celebration of how far we, as a people, have come from our days as early hunter - gatherer people's. Yes, those games can be about competition and war and strife, but there's a big aspect that's about building, growing, and developing. I think we need more celebration of our people's as one global people with many aspects, focusing on what we can learn from one another.

If there's anything I want Kathy to know, it's never too late to dive into gaming. Like with anything you might be lost at first, with drawing as an example you can't even draw a half decent circle but if you have the passion to search out and find what drives you to enjoy this medium there is always enough time and eventually that blob you drew starts to look like an oval. Games have been getting better at accessibility options and many include story modes that make the game super easy for those that just want to experience their stories and music. A large part of this community wants deeply to share the beauty they find in any way they can because nowhere else in entertainment have I felt such a surge of emotions like moments for FF16's Find the Flame or Destiny's Deep Stone Lullaby. I hope Kathy you can find the time and courage to dive into this deep vast ocean with us. It's worth it

I love love loved the discussion around modernization vs traditional concepts in music. It's actually something I think about in cooking as I'm generally a traditionalist and "doing things as they were meant to be". But the arts, cooking, music, painting, singing, etc, all march forward and needing to not lose that traditional understanding while pushing forward and progressing is always an incredibly difficult balance.

Celes' Aria as you call it is actually called "Aria di Mezzo Carattere" by Nobuo Uematsu. Fun fact about FF6 is that Squaresoft almost didn't have Nobuo Uematsu doing the music for the game because he wanted out of the game industry and to be a true composer and already had a operetta made which included Aria di Mezzo Carattere and Dancing Mad. His conditions to do the games music was to include his operetta in the game which ended up changing the games entire story line to make the game itself feel like a opera/theatrical play.

I love the sentiment of defining music genres less by what it's not and more by what it is. How many genres SHARE such core values not just in mood or theme or tone, but in rhythm, in composition, in all these musical legos. I love how many video game composers, are just dumping all these genre lego blocks and building pieces that speak to them, to us, to the game. I've always been drawn to music that mixes genres well, and vg composers feel like at the front of that sort of radical experimentation.

Ahhh... 27:16 Reproducing the sounds of nature. I will never forget the time the outside (but covered!) orchestra for The Planet Earth (in the vein of The Planets) was practically rained out. Pouring rain, the rumble of thunder, the wind and the fresh wetness of the air. No one left though. The people too close to the edges where the wind would attempt to dump rain on them just put up their umbrellas or rain jacket hoods. Mother Earth came to attend the orchestra in her honor and it was absolutely amazing.

What the heck... why is this age restricted? Regardless, can't wait to watch/listen, but I'm likely gonna head on over to that vod to catch this in it's entirety. Love the fact you're sharing video game music, and frankly, I hope I can share some with you some day. Just not sure if it's something you can or can't do videos on. Doesn't matter too much if you can or can't, but still would enjoy sharing.

Interesting that she'd hear the drone string and identify it with India when it's a common quality of medieval European fold music.

Kathy’s response to the Doom track was really interesting! I’d love to just listen to her discuss various OST’s all day.

Baba Yetu is probably the first time video game music really stuck out to me. It just perfectly conveys this feeling of exploration, growing and advancement like a hymn of humanity. The same goes for Sogno di Volare as well. I love Cristopher Tin.

The Ezios Family description of "here's a big story, and here's my small part in it" is EXACTLY what the ezio games feel like, exactly what the music feels like.
